Known in part for being a largely master planned city/community, as well asbeing one of the safest cities of its size in the nation year after year, ThousandOaks was incorporated on September 29, 1964. The Janss family (namesakeof the Janss Mall, Janss Road, etc.), purchased 10,000 acres of Conejo farm-land in the early 1900’s. By the early 1960’s, thanks in no small part to thewise development and insightful stewardship of the Janss family and corpo-ration; there were two shopping centers, an industrial area/park, schools, churches, and a four year college for all to enjoy. One of those shoppingcenters being, what is known today as the Janss Marketplace. Larry Janss, president of the Lawrence Janss Co. and chairman of the Gold CoastPerforming Arts Association, developed Gold Coast Plaza and Janss Villagein Thousand Oaks. His family developed the Janss Marketplace, VenturaCounty’s oldest major shopping mall.

The Janss family developed Janss Mall’s first phase in 1960. In 1969 a198,000 plus square foot Sears department store and 90,000 square feet ofshop space was added, bringing the non-Sears total to just over 291,000square feet. Other current anchor tenants of JanssMall, which at the time was about 85 percentleased, included Best Products, Toys R Us,Marshall’s, Thrifty Drugs and the Mann ConejoTwin Theater.

By 1993, the 34-year old, 27-acre Janss Market-place, was ready for cosmetic improvements andan increase in major tenant base. The City’sprimary source of revenue was and is salestax generated by area businesses. Based onincreased competition for customer dollars fromnewer area shopping centers, it was determinedthat a renovation would benefit all partiesinvolved. Certain existing buildings would need to be re-moved to make room for a newly acquired departmentstore building. That building, plus a new theater complex, would eliminate a major portion of the existing groundlevel parking and require the removal of one existing build-ing along with the alteration of certain others. In order tomeet city parking requirements for any such center, a mul-tilevel parking structure was proposed. In 1994, the Cityissued bonds in the amount of $29,229, 406.30 to beused for the four level parking structure, a public plaza, adjacent walkways and street improvements. There wouldbe 130,000 square feet of new retail space and upgrad-ing of the existing 300,000 square foot Mall.

JANNS MARKETPLACE

A LONG HISTORY IN THE COMMUNITYAt this time the Janss Mall was to be renamed the Janss Marketplace. Newtenants anchoring the 160,000 square feet of net new space would includeMervyn’s, a nine-screen Mann Theaters facility, Barnes & Noble, Good Guysand Wherehouse Records. Renovation plans also included a new food courtand parking building.

Today Janss Marketplace is home to over 40 merchants which include Sears,Toys R Us, Buca Di Beppo, Daphne’s Greek Cafe, Marshall’s, Aaron Brothers,TGI Fridays, Gold’s Gym, Radio Shack, Rite Aid, Wachovia Credit Union,Burger King, Panera Bread, Mann Theaters, Payless Shoe Source, Fuddruckers, and many more.

Janss Marketplace is constantly evolving and continues to make major invest-ments in the center. In the past few years, Janss has invested nearly $2 millioninto amenities that draw the community. Janss Marketplace offers it’s shoppersimmaculate gardens, an outdoor food court and fireplace, an interactive foun-tain and the latest addition is our new kids outdoor soft-play area. Our outdoor

fireplace is a 15-foot, dual-sided fireplace that the community can useas a gathering place to meet friends for coffee and to start theirevenings together before shopping or going to a movie at Mann

Theaters. One of Janss most impressive additions was a40- jet interactive fountain that plays music and offers a

fantastic light show once the sun goes down. It’s reallya showpiece and, unlike the Bellagio where you standand watch, children can play in this fountain, dancingto the music and generally having a ball. Most recently,

Janss decided to install an outdoor soft playarea. The outdoor play area includes acaterpillar, worm, frog, cricket and a tree. All of the play elements allow kids to crawlover, under and though them. The tree evenincludes a slide.

We invite the entire community to visit JanssMarketplace for dining and great shop-ping, to let the kids play in the interactivefountain, get some coffee by the fireplaceand come back at night for dinner and amovie. Additionally Janss offers a yearround event calendar featuring, live summerconcerts, movies under the stars, a fountainmusic and light show and many moreevents and activities for the entire familyto enjoy.

The Janss familydeveloped JanssMall’s first phase

in 1960.
