Welcome everyone to the New Year. Since I last wrote to you we have had the annual junior tournament and I wish to thank all who participated. We have also had players “do well” in an Ulladulla tournament and have also as a club run a successful BBQ outside Harvey Norman. Jerrabomberra players including myself will also be participating at the World masters in Turin Italy this year. Should be a lot of fun and I am packing all my jerra tennis shirts so when I am asked about the club I can tell them about the wonderful people who play tennis at the club.

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor
Thank you for the publication of the Top Spin newsletter, a high quality journal of our clubs activities and achievements. My letter seeks some tennis coaching advice. I have been having great difficulty making contact with the ball when playing tennis. My playing partners have suggested some lessons with the club coach Dave Horsfall may help with the problem. Do you think this is a good idea or would perhaps a larger racquet (as suggested by Peter Moon) be a better alternative? Help!

Dear Name and address withheld
It was recently commented by the club coach that Tony McCosker, a highly skilled and respected Division 1 player, is using “an old ladies racquet with a very large head”....so as suggested by Mr Moon, playing with a larger racquet might help you hit the ball over the net.......and play in Division 1. Alternatively, there are some very good Optometrists located in Queanbeyan. Good luck.

Hot Shots Challenge
The JTC held its first Hot Shots challenge on Saturday 8th of December. The event catered for RED / ORANGE ball players and was held in-conjunction with JTC's Junior Club Championship tournament. Over 20 players aged between 5-12 years took part in the challenge and as the photos show, a fun day was had by all! The highlight of the day was the visit from Santa. He arrived (AUSSIE STYLE) and had a special gift for every player Many thanks go to the JTC assistant coaches, JTC committee members and parents for all their help running this event. I know my girls are looking forward to the next one!

“Thirsty Thirds” take out Div 3 Mens Spring Singles
Final
Since our last newsletter our Men’s Div 3 Saturday Singles team (affectionately known as the thirsty thirds) participated in the grand final on 1 December 2012 against Forrest. Having lost only one match in the 10 lead up rounds (to Forrest) a close match was anticipated. Jerra was able to reverse the early season loss with a resounding 6 rubbers to nil victory. Gordon Elliott led the way with a 7-5 6-1 victory over Tony Fernando followed by Grant Woodbridge with a 6-4 6-0 defeat of Forrest’s John Powell. Nick Pinkerton had a hard fought 7-5 6-3 win against Clayton Hitch while John Talbot continued the Jerra dominance with a 6-3 6-3 win over Jeff Fish. Grant and Gordon took out their doubles matches 6-2 6-1 while Nick and John triumphed in a close doubles match in three sets 6-1 6-7 7-6.
The victory sees the Jerra team promoted to Division 2 for the Autumn 2013 competition. We are seeking a new nickname as the “thirsty seconds” does not have quite the same ring to it. As many as 9 players helped Jerra field a side in this comp. In addition to the 4 finalists significant contributions during the season were made by Cameron Dunne, Gary Cameron, Peter Terwee, Dave Pruckner and Andrew Warnes.

Jerrabomberra Tennis Club is very excited to be sending a world class tennis team (all 3 of us) to the World Masters Games which is being held in Turin, Northern Italy, 2-11 August 2013. After many nail-biting matches and sudden death play-offs the JTC team was finally narrowed down to Giovanni Talbot, Davino Pruckner and Lena Nealer.....and luckily, as generous sponsor funding permits, we are also taking along our very own ball girl......Carolina Talbot. Actually, truth be known.....the more the merrier.....so if you can hit a ball over the net and like the idea of a bowl of pasta and glass of local Chianti in beautiful Turin please contact Lena (Helen) Nealer on 0400 380 178 or check out the website www.torino2013wmg.org

Harvey Norman BBQ Fundraisers for 2013
Not only is Harvey Normans Carpet and Flooring Tony McCosker a valued major sponsor of our club (and slightly better than mediocre player), he has also managed to convince “Gerry” to allow the Jerrabomberra Tennis Club to conduct an all day Sausage Sizzle in the car park of his Fyshwick store on his 5 biggest sale trading days of the year. The first event was held on 13 January when 14 enthusiastic club volunteers managed to sell 300 sausage sandwiches and 50 egg and bacon rolls by 3pm. This resulted in an $800.00 profit of which $500.00 has been deposited into our steadily growing clubhouse building fund. Profits from this fundraising event also will go towards the purchase of tennis balls for both junior and adult pennant tennis. We are the only club in this region that provides free balls to players representing our club in interclub competition.
Helpers wanted for 24 MARCH 2013! The next Harvey Norman BBQ is on 24 March. Contact Grant Woodbridge on 0408 061954 or email [email protected] if you would like to help out. 3 hour shifts are available 8.30am – 11.30am, 11.30am – 2.30pm, 2.30pm – 5.30pm.

The popular Ulladulla Seniors tournament was held on 8th, 9
th and 10
th
February. This tournament attracts a large contingent of Sydney and Wollongong based players and entries had to be closed prior to the December deadline due to its popularity. Jerrabomberra Tennis Club was represented in the men’s singles by Grant Woodbridge, the men’s doubles by Grant Woodbridge and Gordon Elliott. The Ladies doubles saw Kathy Elliott and Pauline Downes representing Jerra with Kathy and Pauline also teaming up with Gordon and Grant in the mixed doubles.
The Jerra players had an outstanding tournament. Gordon and Grant took out the Division 2 men’s doubles while Kathy and Pauline were undefeated in the Division 3 ladies round robin but lost on games in a count back to a team they had beaten (strange system).
In the mixed combined age (95-110) Grant and Pauline took out the title going through undefeated. They met another undefeated pair (Louis and Geoff Mortimer from Penrith) in the last round which effectively was the final. Pauline and Grant took out the best of 8 games match 5-3 in a tough match.
Grant advises he was outclassed in the men’s 45-50 singles and only took 1 match out of 4. “Thankfully that win (in a tie breaker) was against Paul Corcoran from Boorowa. “He is my second cousin so at least I still have bragging rights back home”.

New Smoking Laws – for the attention of all members
Page 6 of 9 JTC Top Spin Newsletter
The new laws that came into effect 7 January 2013 are NSW legislation administered by NSW Health. In brief, NO smoking at aquatic centres, in any public building, including park and sports buildings, or within 4 metres of the door. It is now an offense to smoke within 10 metres of a playground or Sports spectator area. NSW Health inspectors will police the new laws and Sports Clubs and Council are required to advise people booking their facilities of the new laws. Further information can be found on the NSW health website www.health.nsw.gov.au/tobacco/Pages/smokefree-legislation.aspx
For the Jerrabomberra Tennis Club this means that there is NO smoking within the fence perimeter of the club and outside the fence perimeter you need to be effectively just over 10 metres away recognising that some people watch tennis as a spectator from the fence. On the west side where we adjoin sporting fields there would be no smoking. In the car park you have to be 10 metres away from the basketball hoop and the kid’s playground as well as the courts.
