PG&E Community Pipeline Safety Initiative: Improving Emergency Access for First Responders

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is working with customers and the City of Elk Grove to help ensure first responders have immediate access to natural gas transmission pipelines in case of an emergency. This important safety work involves reviewing structures, trees, and brush located near the gas pipeline that could block emergency access for first responders or damage the pipeline. For any tree or structure that needs to be replaced for safety reasons, PG&E will work with the property owner to develop a plan that protects public safety while preserving the character and natural beauty of the area.

PG&E will be meeting with local residents and organizations so that the community is well informed before any work takes place. In the meantime, if you have any questions or would like more information about the planned safety work in Elk Grove, please contact PG&E’s local customer outreach specialist Alison Feliz at 216-7482 or [email protected]. Additional information on the Community Pipeline Safety Initiative, as well as other PG&E gas safety efforts, can also be found at pge.com/GasSafety.

While we’re all hoping for a strong rainy season, it has been a few years since we’ve had to deal with a series of heavy storms. If this is the year (fingers crossed), then here are some tips to remember:

Treat a dark traffic signal as an all-way stop during power outages—it’s the law!

Do not attempt to drive through standing water; if you can’t see the curb, it’s probably too deep to drive through.

Be prepared for the worst, as only a limited number of sandbags may be available at City distribution sites in anticipation of heavy rainfall and severe, widespread flooding.

Call the City’s maintenance hotline at 687-3005 to report flooding, high creek levels, fallen trees or limbs, clogged storm drains or culverts, malfunctioning traffic signals or street lights, and downed traffic signs.

Stay away from downed or sagging power lines, streetlights, or traffic signals, and any debris that might be entangled with them—they could be deadly! Call your utility provider or 9-1-1 to report downed power lines or natural gas leaks.

Elk Grove is looking to you to help name a future 5-acre Laguna Ridge park site. Naming of a park is one of the most enduring honors our City can bestow. Submit your nomination if you know of a theme idea or an individual, club, or organization that would be deserving. Nominations will be accepted online, by mail, or hand delivery through February 29.

Visit www.elkgrovecity.org/parks for details.

Transparency: Engagement Made SimpleEngaged residents, doing everything from reading reports to watching where the city spends its money, are the heart of our form of government. Gone are the days of having to go to City Hall to review this City data—all you need is an Internet connection. The City continues to make improve-ments to the tools and services available online, making it even more convenient to review things like detailed City budget information, planning projects, building permit data, capital improvement projects, business license data, and GIS maps and information.

Six months remain in the information-gathering phase of the General Plan Update. Your input now will impact the decisions the City makes in the future. Those who have already collaborated on this important effort have helped the project team understand key issues and community interests to be reflected in the new 20-year plan. Now, the City and project team are digging deeper into these key topic areas and outlining and discussing specific policy alternatives. Ensure your perspective is considered—participate in the upcoming opportunities:

Engage in deeper conversation on issues that require balancing tradeoffs at any or all of the three topic-based workshops. Dates to be announced soon.

Attend a special joint meeting with Planning Commission and City Council members where issues and opportunities will be discussed. The meeting is tentatively scheduled for February 11.

Visit the General Plan mobile studio to weigh in on issues and preliminary policies in preparation for writing the first draft of the new General Plan. The mobile studio is planning to stop at several City events.

Details about these opportunities and more are available by visiting www.elkgrovecity.org/generalplan

Plug in at City HallTake charge when doing business or attending a meeting at City Hall—plug in your electric vehicle (EV)* to one of the two EV stations now available.
