create a new beauty
and health routine
When you put your
health first, it’s easier to
give your all to every-
thing else—school, fami-
ly and careers.
Welcome to the FIRST issue of
Naturally Pink Tree Magazine! We’re excited
to finally bring to you a magazine that highlights the benefits of natural
beauty and holistic health—-specifically for young women.
Growing up, so many young women never had the opportunity to be
introduced to the world of herbal teas, benefits of aromatherapy, detox-
ing, and natural skin and hair care products. Our goal is to educate
young women about living a more healthy lifestyle—naturally.
Our small business highlight, Organic Beauty Vixen, “encourages
multicultural women to change their beauty, health and wellness rou-
tines to protect both their long term health and eco-fierceness” (page
18).
Since we absolutely adore reading a good book and shopping, we also
feature book and movie reviews, fashion on a budget and some well-
needed relationship advice.
I have to thank the NPT team. They have been with me from the begin-
ning offering thought-provoking articles , as well as a design analysis of
the magazine. Thank you again. This is only the beginning.

As temperatures drop, the
warmth of those cuddly covers
keeping you to sleep at night can
be harder to break away from in
the morning. Shorter days and less
day-light might bring down the
mood to go out with your girls on
a Saturday. The combination of
wind, snow and ice can rip away
the energy to do much of any-
thing. But fear not; if you’re not up
for the winter chill, check out
these amazing books to fire up
your mind and spirit.
Inspiration Rescue
For all you aspiring writers out there, do not ever let the challeng-es of life destroy who you are. This 23-year-old fashion journalist did-n’t. In “Still Lolo,” the author tells the tragic tale of what happened to her just a year ago. After exiting the plane from a short flight back in December of 2011, Lauren “Lolo” Scruggs was suddenly hit by the still-moving propeller blade. Several major surgeries and pray-ers managed to salvage her life, but her left hand and eye were lost. Dealing with what happened and the doubts of ever going back to normal was a tough journey for the young woman. But Lolo has healed from the physical and men-tal pains from the accident. Through her strength and the support of her family, Lauren was able to open up about how she conquered the trials of con-tinuing to grow with her family and tell an encouraging story of hope, purpose and allowing the essence of who she is stay strong.
Living in a new, foreign country away from everything familiar to you will not be such a fun journey
when you don’t open up to the possibilities. Sophia Al-Maria thought when her mother sent her away from Washington to go live with her father in Qatar that it would be a cultural boot camp. What she didn’t expect was a journey for freedom. “The Girl Who Fell to Earth” tells the story of a young woman trekking on a nomadic trail through the green valleys of the Pacific Northwest to the hills of the Arabian Gulf and then later on to the straggling tur-moil of Cairo. Jumping from place to place leaves Sophia feeling trapped in a tug-of-war between two families, two cultures and two worlds. Sophia struggles to find herself in a new land through the voyages of an uprising in Cairo, young love in the Arabian Gulf and self-discovery in the alps of Mount Sinai. Travel with this young trailblazer through her personal tale of growth in the unlikeliest of places.
Romantic Quest
Every girl re-members her first boyfriend. The fluttering butterflies in your stomach and the gentle tug of his warm grip are
embedded into your memory for-ever.

In “Crazy Love” by Amir Abrams, high school senior Kamiyah Nicols’ first boyfriend is also her first love. She falls deep for the college fresh-man, Sincere, while letting loose of the life she’s built with her family, her grades, and her friends, the Fly Fine Friends Forever. Her dive into a lovers bliss has her drowning from the life she has with her loved ones. But when she dis-covers the text messages from oth-er girls on her boyfriend’s phone, her heart breaks along with her sanity. When Sincere tries to end things between them once and for all, she retaliates with some in-tense payback that could jeopard-ize his future.
Eye Opening Thriller
Ever think of a world without adults? Well “Starters” is a little close to that with its own unique twist. This book by Lissa Price is an electrifying tale of a girl trying to survive the destruction Earth has turned into. Everyone between the ages of 20 and 60 has been killed during the Spore Wars leaving the planet alone with children, teenag-ers and elders. Callie is now in charge of taking care of her little brother Tyler while on the run with their friend Mi-chael from the renegades who would kill them for anything. She seeks refuge in a place called Prime Destinations controlled by a myste-rious individual known as the Old
Man. He helps teens by hiring them to rent their bodies to sen-iors (Enders) who wish to be young again. To keep her friend and her brother alive, she decides to be a donor. But something goes wrong with the nerochip in her brain and she wakes up in the life of her renter – the life of a woman living in a man-sion, driving nice cars, and going out with a senator’s grandson.
I
She discovers it’s all too good to be true when she learns the secret of her renter and the devastating evil lying behind the true plans of the Prime Destinations. What will she do now? Dig in to find out.
Intellectual Uprising
Tweeting, sharing, texting; Oh, the social media. Our world has be-come a hub for digital technology bringing people together in easier
ways than ever before. It’s too tempting to tweet to the world about the smallest inkling of thoughts streaming through your brain at this very moment. Howev-er, MIT technology and society spe-cialist Sherry Turkle thinks this form of communication may not be the most earnest of avenues. “Alone Together” sheds light on the inauthenticity of collecting thousands of Twitter and Facebook “friends” as well as the confusing and misleading communication that comes along with it. Through hundreds of interviews, Turkle explains the unstable rela-tionships that can come between friends, classmates, lovers and families through social media. While the weather outside might be a bit of a burden at times, there’s nothing wrong with bun-dling up with a good book. Wheth-er at home or on your travels to somewhere special, let your mind explore the pages of these en-thralling stories for your imagina-tion, curiosity, and intellect to run wild through.

Just stare at it; you can feel a certain some-thing protruding from its corners. It’s a power, an energy teasing the old layers of yourself waiting to shed off as the New Year ap-proaches.
The woman on front possesses an air of confi-dence and poise. Her beauty is un-deniable as well as her vitality.
Even from the simple black & white colors em-anating into the viewer’s pupils, a
rainbow of forti-fying attributes climb out of the four-cornered portrait to show-case the unstop-pable verve com-ing from within. At only a five sec-ond glance, one can completely understand why Alicia Keys is such a woman on fire.
Her latest album
alone is not the
single product
that exemplifies
how astonishing
her music is. The
stylish fedora,
the long and thin
hanging box
braids and her
signature piano
playing skills
etched a respect-
able stance for
the young singer
into the history
of talented artists
when she first
came on the sce-
ne. From her im-
peccable song
writing abilities
to her philan-
thropic efforts
among various
charities, this
woman has sig-
nificantly pre-
sented us with
some regal treas-
ures of the heart.
Alicia Keys Ignites The Flames of Self-Discovery in “Girl on Fire”
After reaping the benefits of this all around super-
star for the past decade, her fifth studio album
packs another punch.
Her records stood firm on illuminating the passion
and vigor in a worthwhile relationship, the difficult
lessons learned in the path of life and the valuable
potential of a woman’s worth.
A walk into a new territory, the fusion of sound
collected in “When It’s All Over” is a contrasting
mix of drums and studio produced beats. The lyr-
ics speak of enjoying the love of her life before she
eventually is no longer a part of this world. “Listen
To Your Heart” swims in the rivers of a Crystal Wa-
ters sound. This tune has a simple, yet catchy
rhythm demonstrating the necessity to listen to
the truest and most vital part of your body.
A slightly churchy sounding tune hinted with some
cool effects is layered with excellent song writing
in “Tears Always Win.” The truth runs free while
describing the effort we all have in shoving down
the tears when we’re hurting in this song. No
matter how hard we fight, the pain always finds a
way to the surface.
With energy springing off of many tracks in the
album, Alicia keeps the fire burning as she brings
along another to create an inferno of musical mag-
nificence. Maxwell’s high falsetto is enticing
enough to melt the hearts and the minds of many
where they can easily enter a realm of sensual ec-
stasy in “Fire We Make.” Alicia ignites the candle
of passion in her vocals to create a masterpiece
ready to fuel the excitement intertwining between
two lovers.

create a masterpiece ready to fuel the excitement inter-
twining between two lovers.
Small as a pebble at first, this track becomes a moun-
tain of beauty and strength in “101.” Her dedication to
the lyric’s personality speaks true in her expressive,
emotional account; a calamitous story of a woman
falling to the destruction of another. “Brand New Me”
could easily be the part 2 of ”101.”
Light piano playing and echoes characterize the begin-
ning almost creating a journey into a cave of personal
exploration. Her beautiful voice and quiet instrument
playing explodes into a powerful melody exemplify-
ing the overpowering force trying to take her down in
life. It picks up in musical supplements and is its own
hurricane of self-discovery and courage.
It’s a difficult realization to ponder over once the al-
bum is over. Thirteen songs just are not enough in my
opinion. Each song rivets it’s own message as they
jump into the
different elements of life that mold and help us grow.
This album is like an ode to one’s self after the battle
of life’s challenges has beaten us down. Whenever
you are having a tough day, brush the dirt off, give
yourself a big hug and treat yourself to a self-
deserving pat on the back through listening to a “Girl
on Fire.”

About Essential Oils
Essential oils are volatile
plant based oils that have
been used for centuries in
beauty and therapeutic
preparations. You can
find essential oils readily
available at your local
pharmacy or health foods
store ranging in price
from $3.00 upward of
$15.00.
The price variance is
based on how scarce the
plant is prior to turning it
into an essential oil.
There are hundreds of es-
sential oils on the market.
However, not all of them
are safe to use, and none
of them are safe to place
on the skin directly unless
the bottle indicates it has
been diluted with a plant
oil of some kind. If you
are handling 100% essen-
tial oils or if you are un-
sure, always blend it with
what is known as a carrier
oil.
Carrier oils are nothing
more than a plant based
oil such as vegetable,
corn, olive, or sweet al-
mond oils — you don’t
want to cause irritation to
your skin.
Essential oils can also be
placed in a diffuser, on a
cotton ball or napkin
without diluting. In this
case you would simply
breathe in the essence of
the oil through your nose.
Essential Oils for
Anxiety
According to
LiveStrong.com essential
oils are very effective in
reducing anxiety. The
site reports a study con-
ducted at the University
of Maryland stating that
upon smelling Lavender
essential oil, as an exam-
ple, there was an effect on
brain cells similar to seda-
tive drugs appearing to
promote sleep and relaxa-
tion.
Essential oils can stimu-
late various receptors
within the brain, therefore
prompting a mental re-
sponse.

Essential Oils for
Anxiety
naturallypinktreemag.com l 11
There are many essential oils used in aromatherapy to
address anxiety, and what you select is determined by
how you ultimately want to feel, such as energized
and alert or more relaxed.
The essential oils can be used alone or mixed with
other essential oils to create a synergistic blend. The
following are the most popular essential oils for ad-
dressing anxiety according AltMD.com:
Bergamot: Assists in relieving stress and depres-
sion accompanied by anxiety.
Clary Sage: Relieves stress and exhaustion, which
are typically accompanied by anxiety.
Lavender: Relieves stress, assists in relaxing and
getting to sleep.
Patchouli: Assists in relieving fatigue which is as-
sociated with anxiety.
As a licensed therapist, my personal favorites to use
are Neroli, Osmanthus, Lavender, Grapefruit, Berga-
mot, Rosemary, Rose, Basil, Chamomile and Gerani-
um.
I have found these oils to be the best in aiding in re-
laxation and relieving anxiety.
Recipes To access the deepest part of your sensory plexus,
place the essential oils on a tissue, and breathe the
tissue deeply.
Or, blend the essential oils with a carrier such as olive
or sweet almond oil or any other plant based oil, and
massage onto your temples, scalp or both.
As with any medication including herbs and essential
oils, you should check with your physician if you
have any conditions that require medical care includ-
ing pregnancy before using essential oils.
Self-Relaxation Recipe: Use when medi-
tating, or tapping into your inner spirit.
2 Drops of Neroli
2 Drops of Osmanthus
1 Drop of Basil
1 Drop of Lemon
Event Stress Recipe: Use for major
events, such as presenting, taxing an exam,
etc.
10 Drops of Grapefruit
5 Drops of Neroli
5 Drops of Bergamot
3 Drops of Rose
Stress Headache Recipe: As the name
suggests, use when you are suffering from a
headache.
10 Drops of Lavender
10 Drops of Chamomile
8 Drops of Geranium
Cheers to living the essential life!

DO YOU Need to Give Your Self-Esteem a Boost?
Whether you are in high school, college, or
in your thirties working the 9-5 grind, you
have undoubtedly witnessed the “it” girl and I
know you know what I’m talking about. The
“it” girl seemingly has her life together, the
perfect hair, the perfect make-up, the perfect
clothes, and of course the perfect guy. How-
ever, what really makes an individual mag-
netic, including the “it” girl, is their confi-
dence.
I recall emulating people whom I felt embodied confi-
dence until it became habit for me to carry myself
with a positive, engaging energy. However, had
someone pulled me aside early on in life to clue me
in on the fact that confidence has very little to do
with one’s outside, and everything to do with how
you feel on the inside —perhaps I could have saved
myself a lot of awkward moments, negative self talk,
and time waiting for validation from others.
Confidence is a lot like spirit and soul,
we all have it, but you will never be able
to realize it until you tap into it.
Unfortunately, that doesn’t happen overnight. How-
ever, there are key behaviors that you can implement
into your daily life to get you to the point of being a
woman with undeniable confidence no matter your
age. With that said, here are top 10 tips to getting
you on your way to a more confident you..
Tip 1: Appreciate the person you are, and
own it!
Okay, I know that sounds very philosophical, with a
bit of “you go girl!” mixed in, but it goes beyond that.
It takes confidence to own who you are. No matter if
you are quirky, nerdy, the funny girl, etc., when you
own it others not only see your confidence, but they
respect you for it.
Tip 2: Carry your carriage high.
The first and only time, I may add, I had someone tell
me to carry my carriage high I was totally confused.
Where I’m from, a carriage is something you attaché
