Founder Testimony Photo of Shanti Kumar (take photo from http://www.janasevainc.org/team-jana-seva)

Mr. Lalapet Shanti Kumar

Founder, Jana Seva Inc.

Even though child literacy rate in India is over 70 %, there is still a large number of children, especially

orphans, who do not fall into that bracket; they are deprived of basic education, are without a ‘safety

net.’ The primary reason is the economics. It is here that Jana Seva Inc., hopes to play a vital role in

creating that ‘safety net’ for deserving children by giving them opportunities to become literate and yes,

reach for the skies. By joining hands with like-minded organisations, Jana Seva Inc., is stepping towards

ensuring a brighter tomorrow for today’s India.

Commented [LK15]: Jana Seva does not have any present

plans to raise funds. The first step is to upgrade / update the

Website. We do have a mailing list of about 2000 people. Our

goal is to send the email to people on the list and request

them to forward it to everyone on their mailing list without

sharing it with us. Also, identify companies which donate

matching funds as part of their overall giving. Also, create a

video and keep running it in LSK office, Axletree office, and

many more and let it be a “conversation starter”. We have

done Sudha Raghunathan concerts in 2013. The only other

monies coming in were from my personal donations. It is our

goal to reach a much wider audience when the website is

upgraded.

Netala, Gangotri, Bhatwari

Uttarkashi, Uttarakhand (IN) – 249193

On the banks of the Ganga, in the idyllic little Himalayan village of Netala is Vani Niketan Sikshan

Sansthan (VNSS), a primary school. Managed by the Niketan Sikshan Sansthan (VNSS) trust, it has a team

of villagers, who are striving to provide quality education for their children.

Established in 1995 as a Hindi medium, co-educational school, it has over 170 270 children, mostly

belonging to families of farmers, studying from Classes 1 to 8. The children come from neighboring

villages such as Siror, Hina, Maneri, Ongi, Didsaari, and Ganeshpur. The school boasts of a well-stocked

library, with over 4000 books on diverse subjects, besides a large playground.

At the behest of the Vani Niketan Sikshan Sansthan management, Uttarakhand, Jana Seva Inc., has

engaged SODEWS, an NGOnon-governmental organization, to provide strategic, administrative, operational,

academic and financial support to the school since 2010.

Educating the youth is the best way to empower them. Jana Seva Inc., realized the need to have more

educated people in the society, but the challenge is that the formal education system is unable to cope

with the demand. Also, affordability is a major factor. A more disturbing sidelight is rise in the number of

youngsters who ‘drop out’ of college. This is where community colleges step in to fill the gap and

complement the formal education system.

Swami Vivekananda Rural Community College is a leader in skills-training education. Since 2008, the

college has been working to provide job-oriented education to the less privileged youth in local

communities. SVRCC adds further value by providing training in soft skills, yoga and life coping skills to

students, preparing them for life.

Today, SVRCC can admit and train 1,000 students for annual and short-term courses. The one-point

agenda of every trustee and stakeholder is to see SVRCC start operating at full capacity as soon as

possible and reach out to underprivileged youth in villages and small towns.

With Chennai just only 120 km away, the college is ideally located from the standpoint of student

enrolment and job opportunities.

Every student is in sharp focus at SVRCC. The teachers devote attention to each of them constantly,

especially to their emotional and mental wellbeing. Regular PTAs make the process transparent and gain

commitment and cooperation from parents.

The SODEWS core team now has grown to include close to 30 like-minded individuals who contribute in

various capacities. The organization has grown exponentially to include a strong volunteer work force of

75 individuals engaged in Health and Education sections.

To maximize the rural communities’ livelihoods, Jana Seva Inc., partnered with Society for the

Development of Economically Weaker Section (SODEWS) to enhance people’s wellbeing through

knowledge, healthcare and skills development.

Education:

SODEWS’ interventions are focused on education at pre-primary and primary levels in an intense fashion

and at Middle, High and Higher Secondary schools by providing academic staff support and science

initiatives. While this is the initiative with formal learning, SODEWS also runs 6 non-formal schools

(Residential Special Training Centers – RSTC) which are considered bridging programs. These initiatives

primarily supported by the government cater to at-risk children who have either never been to school or

have dropped out of school. These children spend two years at any one of the six centers to quickly

bridge the gap in their learning and are subsequently sent to mainstream schools. This is a residential

program and currently supports 300 plus children.

Apart from all these programs, SODEWS also provides financial support and administrative and

academic assistance to Vani Niketan Shiksha Sansthan in Netala village, Uttarakhand.

Healthcare:

In addition to working in the area of education, SODEWS volunteers are also involved in health initiatives

mainly working with pregnant and nursing mothers and adolescent girls. Partnering with government

primary health centers (PHCs), the organization assists in immunization drives, pregnant mothers’

counselling and nutrition programs.

SODEWS also regularly conducts health camps with a focus on preventive care. The camps also address

sanitation, besides health-based counselling for adolescent girls.

Life Skills:

SODEWS has also attempted to expand livelihood options for the local tribal community through

projects such as jewelry making, handicrafts, sanitary napkin making, tailoring and candle making.

The Maithri Educational & Charitable Trust was started in 1991 with the aim of funding education for

medical conditions. Maithri was set up by Rajaram Shreedhar in 1983 as a trust. Shreedhar wanted to

to include children from poor and broken homes.

Today, Maithri offers financial assistance to needy children by helping in fee payment and acquisition of

books, notebooks, uniform and shoes.

However, Maithri's expenses are seldom restricted to these objectives - there are always incidental

expenses, like medical emergencies, settling family discords and assisting mothers from broken homes

to sustain a livelihood with dignity. Maithri have realized that to ensure that a child continues to go to

school they need to also invest in the immediate circumstances the child finds herself in - so that the

child's dreams are not compromised by his or her immediate situation. Thus Maithri invests in the child's

household, especially in the areas of health and well-being.

Jana Seva Inc., and Maithri encourage you to support individual children, particular groups of children or

to extend monetary support for our extension activities to do with children, health and the differently

Funded Project 5: Sri Sankara Gurukula Veda Patashala Need address

Vedas are believed to be the Divine revelations from the cosmic space recognized by sages of yore. In

ancient Yugas, the Vedas were much larger in content than it is known today. Sage Vyasa has classified

the Vedas into Rig, Yajur, Sama and Atharva. Sage Patanjali further divided these four into many

branches or Shakhas. However, due to passage of time most of these have been lost to the present

world. It is proven that Veda Mantras confer peace, prosperity and general wellbeing. It is our duty to

nourish and cherish the Vedas for future generations.

The prescribed Sakhas in Rig Veda, Krishna Yajur Veda and Sama Veda are taught at the patasala.

Normally it takes about 10 to 12 years to acquire mastery over one Sakha. Vidyarthis, as the students

are called, are screened and selected at the tender age of 8 to 9 years.

All branches of the Vedas are taught as per the Gurukula system of oral chanting, hearing, repeating and

committing to memory. The exact intonation and the pitch are very important and any deviation will

change the meaning of the text. Hence, this mode of learning is possible only where the Teacher and the

Taught both live under one roof.

Apart from the above, training of select students in application of Vedic procedure to various rituals

such as Upanayanam, Vivaham, Seemantham and other functions are also included in the curriculum.

Food, clothing and medical facilities are offered free of cost to the students.

- From 2005 onwards, Jana Seva Inc. has been providing Provided students of Veda Bhavan Sri Sankara

Gurukula Veda Patasala with food, clothing and medical facilities. s….which year?

Jana Seva Inc. is keen to continue supporting the Vedic schooling initiative of this institution and

would solicit your donations to raise funds for supporting the daily needs of the inmates. Donors

can contribute tribute gift donations to mark their weddings, anniversaries, birthdays or in

memory of a departed soul.

Funded Project 6: Goshala [Organized Constructed Refuge Tending Camps for Cattle] In India, cows are sacred. Most religious mutts institutions and ashrams, and even some temples, have a

Goshala for tending to and caring for the cows.

Establishing a Goshala is considered divine work. Cow dung and urine have medicinal properties and

Indian households in villages and towns smear the floor with cow dung to purifying the houses. It is a

practice in India to allow the cows to stay for 3-days before the owners move-in a new house or invite a

cow along with its calf to enter the house.

Having this cultural and religious understanding of Goshalas, Jana Seva Inc., is rightly thinking of

encouraging the initiative of establishing Goshalas wherever it could.

VOLUNTEER Every one of us, at some time in our life, feels like contributing towards the betterment of the society.

But among the various obstacles faced by many of us are limitations pertaining to time. In order to

tackle these and give you the opportunity to support our cause, Jana Seva Inc., has made volunteering

provisions that will give you the freedom to spread our message without disturbing your schedule.

From attending an event, to making a donation, there are many ways to get involved with the work we

do in support of children and the society.
