ilya“meetingofminds”,yetazonewheremindsmaymeetandinteract.Bynotdistinguishingwordsbetweenarrivalanddeparture,thereexistsasenseoftimelesscontinuity.Incontrast,someculturesusearrivalanddeparturegreetingswhichhaveamorelinearperspective.Therebyprotocolscreatetheperceivedstartingandendingpointtotheinteractionprocess.Agreatdealofhumanconflictisduetosuchdifferencesinperspective,evenwhenpeopleareusingthe“same”lan-guagetheystillmayseethingsindifferentwayssuchthattheymayfeelatoddswhileperceivingadifferentaspectofthesamereality,basically-differentcon-texts.“Contexts”afterall,arejustmini-realitiesaren’tthey?Itthenoftenbecomesamatterofwhosecontextorrealitydominates:ThatoftheChildorthatoftheParent?StudentortheTeacher?IndividualortheGroup?TheGrouportheState?ScienceortheLaw?LetteroftheLaworEthical/MoralbasisoftheLaw?Inmostofthesecases,wehavenotroubleseeingwhichrealitytrumpstheother,regardlessofourownbias.Othertimes,it’snotsocutanddry. Sothen,whenonerealityusurpsanother,weareawakenedoftentoaper-ceptionofanexpandedreality(notnecessarilybetterorworse,justdifferent).InPhysics,Aristotle’sobservationsandperspectivesgavewaytoGalileo’sthentoSirIsaacNewton’sthentoEinstein’s,andultimatelytomodernquantumtheory.It’snotthatanyofthemwere“wrong”,morethateachsuccessiveviewwasaclearerandmoreencompassingviewofarealitywhichredefinedtheprevious.Yet,bymentioningonlythesepeople,youcouldgetasensethatprogressinthefieldofPhysicswascontinuous.Itwasn’t,orthesepeoplemightnothavespannedmorethan2,000years.InterestinglymodernPhysicshasrevealedsomefantasticco-nundrums,likethesameparticlebeingin2differentplacesatthesametime,orconfirmingthatsomeparticlescantravelfasterthanthespeedoflight.InmanywaysQuantumTheoryhascometoparallelmysticismfrommanytraditions.HowcanwereallymeasuretheeffectofsomethinglikePositiveThinking,forexample?Asconfoundingasthatmaybe,thoughtsandbeliefswhichtranslateintoactions,havemoreobviouseffectswhentherearelargenumbersofpeopleinvolved.Forexample,atsomepointcarsreplacedhorsesandtrainsasthemainformoftrans-portation.Revolutions(peacefulorviolent),Wars,Protests,Strikes,FairElections…aslargescalehumanactionsdemonstratereadilyobservableoutcomes.Yet,asmasterlogicianAbrahamLincolnoncesaid“Youcanfoolsomeofthepeopleallofthetime,andallofthepeoplesomeofthetime,butyoucannotfoolallofthepeopleallofthetime.”Assuch,overthecourseoftime,animpractical(orevenignorantorvague)viewofrealitylike“Theworldisflat”cangivewaytosomethingclearerandmoredefinedor“closer”toagreater“truth”orexpandedunderstanding.Howdoesthathappen,andisithappeningnow? Beginningin2011,renewableenergyproductionintheUnitedStatessurpassednuclearproductioninoverallquantityandpercentage.AsapercentageoftotalU.S.energygenera-tion,renewablesaresteadily,ifmodestly,
gaining.California’sleadershipgoaltargetstheutilizationof33percentrenewableenergysourcesby2020.Hydroelectric,geothermal,solar/photovoltaic,windandbiomasscombinedmakeupagrowingsegmentofthemix:11.7percentasofJune2011,surpassingnuclearat11.1percent.Forthesameperiodin2010,nuclearwas11.6percent,andrenewablewas10.6,accordingtotheU.S.EnergyInformationAdministration. Forbesreportsthatmanyenvironmentalists,however,thinkthatthetwoprominenttechnologiesthatcurrentlymakeupmuchoftherenewablessector—hydroelectricpower,at35percent,andbiomass,at48percent—aretheleastattractive.(Windisthethird-largest,at13percentofre-newable,1.5percentofthetotal.)Large-scalehydroelectricpowerproductionhasharmfulimpactsonriverecosystemsandhasbecomelesspopularinthedevelopedworld.Asforbiomass,eachofthemanytypesoffeedstockmustbeevalu-atedindividuallyforitsemissionsprofile,waterfootprintandotherconsiderations,suchaswhetherfarmfieldsorforestsneedthatmaterialtodecomposeinplaceinordertoretainsoilorecosystemfunction.

Threeresearchers,KarolinGraf,IrisF.Chaberny,andRalf-PeterVonbergfromtheInstituteforMedicalMi-crobiologyandHospitalEpidemiologyatHannoverMedi-calSchoolinHannover,Germanycollectedsurveysfrom85medicalstudentsintheirthirdyearofstudyduringalectureclassthatallstudentsmustpassbeforebedsidetrainingandcontactwithpatientscommences.Studentsweregivensevenscenarios,ofwhichfive(“beforecontacttoapatient,”“beforepreparationofintravenousfluids,”“afterremovalofgloves,”“aftercontacttothepatient’sbed,”and“aftercon-tacttovomit”)werecorrecthandhygiene(HH)indications.Only33percentofthestudentscorrectlyidentifiedallfivetrueindications,andonly21percentcorrectlyidentifiedalltrueandfalseindications. “Thereisnodoubtthatweneedtoimprovetheoverallattitudetowardtheuseofalcohol-basedhandrubinhospitals,”concludetheauthors.“Toachievethisgoal,theadequatebehaviorofso-called‘rolemodels’isofparticularimportance.”

Itisokaynottoknow.ThelateZenmasterSeungSahnemphasizedtheimportanceofa“don’tknowmind,”astatewhichisopentodirectexperience.Hetalksaboutreal-itybeing“likethis,”meaningthatwedon’tneedtoaddintellectualinter-pretation.Likewise,ShunryuSuzukiwritesaboutthe
conceptof“beginner’smind,”whichisopentoallpossibilities.Zenteachesusnottoconfusethoughtswithreality.Thefutureisonlyanidea.Whatareyoudoinginthismoment?Whatishappen-ingasthismomentflowsintothenext?Ifyoufeelanxiety,justletitbeherenow–don’tconfuseitwiththeconceptofthefuture. Wealllongtoholdontohappytimes,lovedones,andtreasuredpos-sessions,butthetruthis,nothinglastsforever.Infact,wecannotholdontoanything,evenifwetry.Theworldiscontinuouslychanging.Ourattempttograspontothingsiswhatcausesourfrustrationandsuffering.Oncethisin-sightisinternalized,notjustintellectu-ally,butasafeeling,wecanbegintoletgoofourstruggleswithlife,andenjoyeachmomentasthegiftthatitis. IntheEasternwisdomtraditions,itiscommontoconsciouslymeditateonchangeandimpermanence,tocometopeacewiththisunavoidablereality.Themeditationbeginswithcontempla-tionofone’sinternalenvironment.Themeditatorisaskedtocontemplatetheever-changingnatureofthephysiologyandcellsofthebody,aswellasthe

change,bothpositiveandnegative.Thisyearinparticularmayevokeasenseofanxietyaboutchange,giventheHollywoodportray-alsoftheworldend-ing.IntheChinesezodiac,2011wastheyearoftherab-bit,whichofcourseweassociatewithgentleness,softness,peace,andlove.2012istheyearofthedragon,whichbringstomindmovementandexcite-ment,orperhapsfearofbeingcharredorleftbehind. IntheJapaneseninjatradition,wehaveasymbolichandgesturethatweusewhenwefeellikelifeisgettingchaotic.Thehandscometogethertoimitatetheshapeofadragon,andourownfaceisbehindthedragon’sear.Ratherthanfacingthedragonheadon,itisoftenwisertostrapyourselfontoitsbackandridethingsout.Youmayevenbeabletowhisperthingsintothedragon’sear,andsubtlyimpacttheseeminglyout-of-controlmonster. Putanotherway,changeisinevita-ble.Insteadoftryingtostopthewaves,wemustlearntosurf.Thetruthis,wecannotpredictorcontrolthefuture.Wecanplanandprepare,butulti-mately,wedon’tknowwhatthefuturewillbring.Ourattemptstocontrolthefutureareamisguidedattempttoavoidwhatwedon’tlikeaboutourlives,torunawayfromthepast,ortoholdontowhatwehavenow.Thisoftenleadstoaself-perpetuatingloopofanxiety,worries,andregrets.

Atadeeperlevel,onerealizesthatthingsareimpermanentbecausetheyareever-changing.Theyareever-changingbecausetheyareinterdepen-dent,meaningeachpersonor“thing”dependsoncountlessotherconditionstoexist.Thetreeoutsidemywindowdependsonsunlight,moisture,air,andtheearth.Sunlightdependsonalloftheastronomicalprocessesittooktoproducethesun.Moisturedependsonthewatercycle,whichdependsonevaporationoftheoceans,movementsoftheair,andsoon.Recognizingthisinterdependenceleadstotherealiza-tionthatallthingsare“empty”ofinher-entself-existence.LifebecomesafluiddanceinsteadofastruggleofNewto-nianbilliardballs.Youidentifywithyourbody,butittookanentireuniversetocreateyou.Itisonlyasocialcon-ventionthatwethinkweareonlythisbody,becauseweneedtheair,sunlight,andeverythingelsetoexist,soinaveryrealsense,youcouldjustaseasilyseetheentireuniverseaswhoyouare. Toputitlesspoetically,suchcontemplationscanleadtoincreasedappreciationforlife,aswellaspsycho-logicalflexibility,whichwillallowyoutohavemoreoptionsinmovingtowardthevaluesandgoalsyouchoosefor2012andforyourlife. So,planandprepareforthefuture,butdon’tforgettoliveyourliferightnow.

3. OurspiritualitywillfindadirectlinktotheEarthofwhichweareapart.Itisinthisconnectionthatwewillfindourdeepestspiritualconnection.
4. OurhealthwillbeseenastotallyintertwinedwithEarth.Wewilldecidetheworkwedonotbasedonmoneybutontheaffectourworkhasonourimmediatecommunityandourcommu-nitywithallspecies.Itisinthiscontextthatourneedsonalllevelswillbemet.
WedevelopedtheEnrightRidgeUrbanEco-villageasawaytosup-portusinlivingsustainably.Thereareeco-villagesthroughoutthecountryspecificallyorientedtosupportingitsmembersinlivingwiththeEarthastheirpriority.Theyaregreatplacestohelpuslivesustainably.Ifjoininganeco-villageisnotpossible,itispossibletofindcommunitiesofpeoplewhoarecommittedtolivingsustainably,whocandevelopwaysofsupportingeachother.Itisdifficulttolivesustainableandhealthylivesononesown.
