Fraser Highway motorists passing through Aldergrove are doing a double take as they catch sight of the showroom in a former warehouse filled with nostalgic drag racers hot rods and memorabilia

The sign out by the highway reads Syndicate Scuderia Hot Rod amp Race Car Museum

The owner is Jack Williams who built one of Vancouverrsquos first hot rods in 1946 customized and hot rodded hundreds of cars and built a series of dragsters under the name Syndicate Scuderia These cars and much more are in the showroom

The parking lot was jammed for the museumrsquos fall opening with period custom cars and hot rods in rows as their owners milled around looking at the museum Many of those attending remembered the iconic hot cars on display and the man who engineered so much horsepower into them and others for more than 60 years

In the front window is a 1923 Model T roadster that was cut down and built into a hot rod in 1947 This may be British

Columbiarsquos oldest surviving hot rod The lightweight roadster powered by a Mercury V8 engine was built by a young enthusiast named Bob Scott who never put it on the road

In 1952 Stu Braddick bought the car and began

prowling Kingsway and other haunts with the hot rod he called lsquoToy Trsquo Jack Williams acquired the car from Sylvia Braddick to display in his museum

A 1970 Hemi Cuda that has only traveled 500 kilometers since new sits alongside one wall The orange Cuda was sponsored by Pacific Chrysler when it was new and campaigned on drag strips all over the Pacific Northwest Gassy Jackrsquos Pub in Vancouverrsquos Gastown was a sponsor

The car was driven by Terry McKay with Cal Wrench in the pits and Jack Williams adding the horsepower Williams gained full ownership of the car about 30 years ago and plans to restore it

This is one of only 284 Plymouth Barracuda muscle cars delivered in the 1970

model year with the monster 426 cubic inch hemi engine coupled to a four-speed transmission A similar car owned by screen actor Nicholas Cage sold at auction in January 2009 for $440000 These cars can command prices of up to $1 million

Jack Williams has a Hemi motor for his car sitting in a row of high horsepower engines ranging from Ford flatheads from the 1930s right up until the big muscle of the lsquo70s He plans to restore his rare muscle car

The 2012 Vancouver Motorcycle Show returns to TRADEX in Abbotsford Jan 19 to 22 with the newest models of bikes the latest in performance and technology and hundreds of add-ons and accessories

Two-wheeled entertainment includes an expanded freestyle show and factory riders from KTM

As one of the first motorcycle trade shows in Canada in 2012 the Vancouver Motorcycle Show is a showcase for manufacturers to unveil their newest models and latest performance updates and features the worldrsquos leading distributors and manufacturers including Yamaha BMW Kawasaki Ducati Honda KTM Suzuki Harley-Davidson Zero and Polaris

The famous hemi-powered Syndicate Scuderia dragster built by Williams to compete in the 1963 Winternationals at Californiarsquos Pomona race track is on display The internationally recognized drag racers had never heard of Jack Williams and probably didnrsquot know anything about Vancouver when his dragster unofficially broke the track record and won the ldquobest appearing dragsterrdquo award

To test the car before going to California Jack Williams got permission from the City of Vancouver to run the car on Great Northern Way before it was opened to traffic He would go on to become the first British Columbian to set an international drag racing record speed of 16822 miles per hour in a standing quarter mile

His collection includes two restored dirt track racers from the 1930s and lsquo40s A period-correct flame painted Ford Model T roadster looks like it just dropped into the showroom from the 1950s

A modern 300 kph-plus dragster built by Jack Williams with partners in Bellingham is on display The car is driven by Jackrsquos daughter Wendy Anne

Among the rolling artifacts is a 1936 Ford four door convertible that Jack Williams purchased in Sechelt and drove back to Vancouver more than 50 years ago It still has the 1960 BC license plates attached

Horsepower Heaven used to be Jack Williamsrsquo shop on Burnabyrsquos Lane Street that his father helped him build 50 years ago For decades it was the hang-out for those with a need for speed Over the years the shop became so cluttered that it was difficult to tell parts from cars

A flotilla of pickup trucks driven by some of Jack Williamsrsquo many friends helped move tons of parts and cars to the new museum location on Fraser Highway just west of downtown Aldergrove

ldquoThis museum is an opportunity for people to see the cars that have been part of local history and have largely been hidden from viewrdquo the octogenarian says

The Syndicate Scuderia Hot Rod amp Race Car Museum has loose hours with admission by donation ldquoIf Irsquom here people are welcome to drop byrdquo Williams grins In the good weather itrsquos a great place for hot rod and custom car enthusiasts to go as a cruise destination ldquoIrsquoll always be here for thatrdquo

20-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine will debut in the all-new 2013 Cadillac ATS compact luxury sedan which will be revealed at the 2012 North American International Auto Show in January

The Cadillac-tuned direct-injected engine will produce an estimated 270 hp At 135 horsepower per litre it will be one of the most power-dense automotive engines besting the highest-performing engines from luxury competitors such as Audi BMW and Mercedes

Among the 20-litre enginersquos highlights are a direct-injection twin-

cam four-valve-per-cylinder engine with continuously variable valve timing twin-scroll turbocharger with air-to-air intercooler forged-steel crankshaft with modular balance shaft system and a two-

stage variable-displacement oil pump with jet-spray piston coolingOverall engine friction is reduced

by up to 16 per cent The low-friction design means engine power is delivered more efficiently

The turbocharger generates up to 20 pounds of boost and its twin-scroll design helps optimize power availability virtually eliminating turbo lag and helping deliver a broad power band
