KILLEAGH / INCHCOMMUNITY COUNCIL

The first meeting of 2009 was held in Killeagh Hall on Thursday8th January with 17 members in attendance. Sgt. Eoin Buckley from Youghal Garda Station who is theSergeant in charge of the Killeagh/Inch area had been invited toaddress the meeting and to answer any queries the CommunityCouncil had on garda matters arising in our Parish.Illegal parking in Killeagh, speeding through the village, and con-cerns regarding anti-social behaviour were discussed. The mainissue which arose from this discussion is the fact that there is onlyone guard based in Killeagh Garda Station to oversee the total areaof Killeagh/Inch Parish together with Castlemartyr and Mogeely.Though the population of these areas has increased greatly overthe last few years there has been no increase in local garda man-power in our area. It was agreed at the meeting that representa-tions should be made to our T.D.’s and County Councillors to tryand increase the number of gardai serving in our community. When local election time comes by please remember to lobby ourlocal representatives on this very important issue. We would like to thank Sgt. Buckley for taking the time to attendour meeting and also to thank our local Garda Dave Leahy for hiswork in our local area.County Council MattersThe Community Council continue to lobby the County Council ona range of matters affecting our local community including the fol-lowing matters:Upgrade of water supply in Killeagh village - Once again noprogress can be reported on this matter despite repeated efforts tosecure a starting date from the County Council. Efforts to securea starting date will continue. Footpaths - The footpaths in Killeagh village continue to deteri-orate. The footpath outside the local national school is particular-ly dangerous and this has been reported on a number of occasions. Road Markings - The road markings have faded throughoutKilleagh village particularly at Cork Road corner where the dou-ble yellow lines and the yellow box is now completely faded. This is a dangerous junction to exit from and the faded road mark-ings are now exacerbating the problem. A request to deal withthis matter has also been forwarded to the Council.Lighting at Cois Cille - A request to erect public lighting at CoisCille has been forwarded to the Council on a number of occa-sions. Residents of this estate have approached the CommunityCouncil to enlist their help with this matter. The lack of publiclighting in this area is a matter of grave concern to the residentsof this estate many of whom have young children.Road at Inch School - The state of the road surrounding Inchschool has also been discussed at our monthly meetings. A largenumber of parents are parking in this area and urgent action isneeded to help to facilitate safe parking around the school and thesafety of parents and children on a daily basis.High RoadAgain there has been concern raised at our monthly meetingsregarding the verges of the High Road. Many residents haveraised this issue with the Community Council who have contactedthe County Council regarding same. Damage to vehicles has beenreported and concern for the safety of road users has beenexpressed due to the verges of the road being in a very dangerousstate.WEB-SITE - It is hoped to have our new web-site up and runningshortly. General information about our local area and local facili-ties and organisations will be available on this web-site. Moredetails at our February meeting.PLAYGROUND - The sub-committee elected to deal with thismatter are still researching their options with a view to construct-ing a playground in our community. It is hoped that progress willbe made on location, grants etc in the near future. Killeagh/Inch Community Council will hold their A.G.M in InchHall on Thursday 12th February at 8 p.m. All sub-committeemembers please attend and a report from each sub-committee will

The Closure of the PostOffice in Killeagh Village

The village of Killeagh in East Cork has been without a postalservice for three months. The removal of the postal service by AnPost has let to a great deal of hardship and inconvenience for themost vulnerable members of our society. For example, pensionerswithout cars now have to ask for lifts to either Youghal orCastlemartyr in order to collect their pensions. Anyone who does-n’t own a car is in a similar predicament if they wish to avail of apostal service. An Post have not given any commitment on when, or if, the postalservice will be re-instated in this parish of over 2,000 people. The Community Council are now in contact with our elected rep-resentatives in the Dail and the County Council together with AnPost to seek the re-instatement of our postal service as soon aspossible.

By ChristyParker Report of the Town Clerk on Matters Arising from the MonthlyMeeting of Youghal Town Council held on 8th December 2008.ESTATE ENHANCEMENT WORKS UNDER THE RAPIDPROGRAMME:1.Three Estate Enhancement Projects are due to commence on 2ndFebruary next for three local authority estates. The estates con-cerned are Blackwater Heights, Ardrath Crescent and RaheenCourt and the value of the projects amounts to 8,285.00. Theprojects will focus on enhancing the physical landscape with a lowmaintenance longterm theme. WATER & SEWERS:1.The reservoirs are currently operating at full capacity with anaverage daily demand of approximately 590,000 gallons per day.A full EPA audit of the water facilities at Boola was undertaken onTuesday 19th December last. A list of improvement works (copyattached) has issued to the County Council this week, the majori-ty of which should be completed by the end of Spring. 2. The foul drainage system is operating satisfactorily and to myknowledge there are no operational problems with any of theCounty Council Pump Stations. A full information report on thecurrent status of the Youghal Main Drainage Scheme is on theagenda of tonight’s meeting. DEVELOPMENT PLAN 2009 - 2015. 1.The final Development Plan meeting is due to be held onMonday 26th January next to adopt the plan with or withoutamendments. The final adopted plan will then be published with-in two weeks of that date. BUDGET 2009:1.The adopted budget for 2009 is now being implemented acrossall functions of the Town Council. Consequently because of thenature of the expenditure cut-backs a series of meetings will beheld with all staff to review current work practices, identifyingareas where improvements are required and examining what lev-els of service is required in certain areas and what levels of serv-ice can be delivered. Challenging times both nationally and local-ly dictate that this review be taken in a swift and decisive manner. De VALERA STREET CAR PARK:1.The appointed contractor Hogan Groundworks and CivilEngineering has indicated in writing to the Council today that theyare not in a position to complete the contract on the car park.Consequently our Engineering Consultants will be carrying out areview of the works completed and remaining works with a viewto tendering out the balance of the works. Youghal Town Council Superintedents ReportReport of the Town Clerk on matters arising from the TownSuperintendents report at the monthly meeting of Youghal TownCouncil held on 8th December 2008Petition from the residents of Woodview Court re the lack of pub-lic lighting in the area: I have issued a warning notice to thedeveloper and forwarded the latest information/ documentation tohand on 22/12/2008.- Disabled Parking Space between Windmill Hill and Xtravisionon North Main Street: A full audit of all available car parkingspaces is required prior to allocating any further spaces as disabledspaces. The amount of disabled parking available in Youghal cur-rently far exceeds the national average.- Illegal use of the disabled parking space outside Xtravision onNorth Main Street: I have referred this matter to the TrafficWarden to monitor and enforce any illegal use of this space.- Provision of a Bus Shelter at the Post Office on North MainStreet: I attach for your information copy letter received from BusEireann dated 8th December 2008 on the matter.- Gritting of roads and footpaths during cold weather: YoughalTown Council have a Section 85 agreement with Cork CountyCouncil in respect of all urban roads. Consequently I have referredyour concerns to Paul Murray, Executive Engineer, Cork CountyCouncil.- Provision of extra lighting on Jail Steps: As the Members areaware a development proposal is currently being appealed to An

Bord Na Pleanala at this location. This proposal provides theopportunity to look at all services on the steps as part of this devel-opment.- Provision of toilets for the Adoration Chapel: This is not aCouncil issue. The Adoration Chapel is in the ownership ofYoughal Parish and as such this is a private matter.- Sweeping of Jail Steps: A thorough clean up of this area was car-ried out last week. This area is being littered by the public gener-ally and by consistent users of the steps. The identity of some ofthese people is known to the locals who should directly informYoughal Town Council of that identity so that enforcement actioncan be taken.- Provision of recycling facilities at the Front Strand: The requiredservices to facilitate this recycling point have been installed. Adecision will be taken in the New Year as to when it will be openedfor business.- Bollard at Dominic Collins Place: I have asked the TownForeman to ensure the replacement of this bollard in order to pre-serve the security of the area.- Condition of wall at Lower Jail Steps: This matter was referredto Paul Murray, Executive Engineer, Cork County Council andDavid Kelly Partnership to monitor and make recommendationson some time ago.- Chippings at Blackwater Heights: This matter is being addressedin the New Year under the Rapid programme and should be com-plete by the end of February next. Mr Ryan read an email from Aidan Foley of Medaza, thecompany holding Northern European rights of the WorldChampionship from 2009-13, which stated that Failte Irelandcould not meet the funding requirements, in the present economicclimate. He added that he remained committed to promotingYoughal as a major centre for maritime activities and was work-ing on alternatives to this end. Mr. Ryan said a number of optionsfor festival based on water activities are under consideration. * (P1 Not Sunk -see report elsewhere in this issue) Congratulations: Cllr Mary Linehan Foley congratulated Mayor Olly Casey’s wifeAnne, on her retirement as cleaner at the council’s offices and pro-posed that Mrs Casey be afforded a civic reception. Mayor Caseyexpressed his gratitude for the sentiments. The Mayor said "theCasey dynasty’s association with the council is coming to an end",following his mother’s link for 33 years, his wife’s 27 and his own43 year tenure, which will terminate on his retirement in June.Cllr Linehan Foley also congratulated brothers Cillian and CianMcCarthy from Blackwater Heights on being the first two broth-ers to win a Youghal snooker tournament ’They have won loads oftournaments and it shows there are worthwhile youth activities inYoughal," she added. The councillor also wished "all the Youghal lads in Chad a happyNew Year" on behalf of the council and concluded with best wish-es to Pa Murphy on his retirement from the ambulance service. She said Mr. Murphy had declined the honour of a civic reception, citing his love of the job as having been reward enough. Town Foreman’s Report: Illegal dumping, bollards, disabled bay, no sleep and slime Cllr Liam Burke sought an update on the public lighting situationat Parklands, of which a petition from residents had beenreceived. He also complained that the Mall House (gates) "appearto be locked more often than open" and he sought solution to ablocked gully outside Seafield House.

to be locked more often than open" and he sought solution to ablocked gully outside Seafield House. Cllr Sandra McLellan said nearby residents are complaining of ratinfestation at the derelict Spinning Wheel site, despite temporaryrespite from the problem following a visit from Rentokill lastsummer. She had contacted Environmental Health, who wereexpected to investigate the problem. Cllr Michelle Hennessy said the rockery at the entrance to DermotHurley Estate is severely impeding the view of motorists exitingonto the Spa hill. "It’s a built up area now and has a lot of traffic,"she added. A missing public light at The Green, Upper Cork andtwo signs facing the wrong way at Summerfield Cross also need-ed resolving. Cllr Michael Beecher stressed that illegal dumping is widespreadand cited the New Line and the Quarry Road as examples of amajor problem. He sought an update on Chapel Lane, as residentsare fearful for their safety and property and advised it would bebetter closed. An abandoned, vandalised car in Dolphin’s Squareneeded removing, he concluded. Cllr Mary Linehan Foley said residents at Raheen Park wanted abin in the area removed as it is attracting illegal dumping. She saidit was particularly bad over Christmas. It was agreed that it waspeople from outside the area were largely responsible. CllrMcLellan said she had brought photos to the town clerk and thebin is to be removed. She had also received similar complaintsabout Sweetfield and other areas. Cllr Linehan Foley said a disabled space is needed for 38 RaheenPark and that recently neither an ambulance nor a doctor couldadequately access an ill woman there. She said she had advised theresident to put a no parking sign on her gate. Cllr Linehan Foley said bollards are urgently needed to preventcars further destroying the footpath at Dr. Kennedy’s Place. Twoholes with protruding concrete pose a danger at Chapel Lane andgreenery on the Spa needs pruning, she added. The councillor saidthe new footpath installed at a house in Dominic Collins Placeneeds extending as it has created a drop that endangers people inthe dark. Cllr Barbara Murray advised that a loose Eircom cover at theintersection of Ashe Street and Windmill Hill is noisy and causingsleep deprivation. She said a longer lasting chemical is need totreat slime on the slip at Nealon’s Quay, Cllr Murray repeated CllrBurke’s call for an update on lighting at Parklands and said over-hanging trees on Cork Hill need cutting back. Cork County Council Items: Ponding, paths and post officeMayor Olly Casey said the ponding (i.e. flooding) in the vicinityof Nagle House was "an absolute disgrace." He described it asdangerous for cars and a recurring nightmare for pedestrians whorisked getting soaked and also projects a poor image of the town.It would make one "ashamed" to be associated with it, proceededthe former water curator before adding that it would not take awork of genius to resolve the problem by digging access to a gul-ley or creating a new gulley. A similar situation persisted atGallagher’s Terrace he added. The Mayor concluded that the greenwalls on Nagle House are turning further green through algae gen-erated by splashing. Town engineer Paul Murray said the issuewill be resolved "in a month or so" along with the Quarry Roadand Gallagher’s Terrace. Cllr Murray described ponding and water-filled potholes atSeafield and especially the entrance to DR Developments back toSeafield/Kilcoran Place. She said a huge amount of whatappeared to be surface water was apparent at the bus stop byFarrell’s pub and there is yet more ponding at Millfield Abbey. Sheasked if the public lighting contract had yet been awarded. Sheproceeded that the walk from the entrance to Sarsfields terrace toCork Hill via Raheen Road is "dangerous" given the sporadicpavement and speeding traffic. The Chestnut Drive/Millfield areasneeded footpaths, while the one at Summerdale lawn is totallyovergrown. Cllr Liam Burke asked for a manager’s report on the library situa-tion in Youghal regarding a new one. He asked for an update onthe unfinished road surface outside new houses near Summerdale

Lawn as well as missing concealed entrance sign that the develop-er removed. He referred "once again" to footpaths "like jigsaws"in the vicinity of South Abbey, Strand Street, Tallow Street, Malllane and Water Street. Cllr Linehan Foley once more sought an update on the request forbollards at the ’accident waiting to happen’ site in Greencloyne, whereby vehicles parked across from Crowley’s shop are obstruct-ing motorists’ views as they exit the nearby estates. She again dis-missed a previous Co. Council argument the expense was an issue. She appealed for bollards at Dr. Kennedy’s Place against footpathparking. The councillor said the forthcoming 3 entrance to the landfillwould lead to further illegal dumping, regardless of the 1 reduc-tion per bag. ’The town is littered with rubbish with no entrancecharge and the 3 will make people even less inclined to recycle,’she predicted. She said she understood the essence of recyclingfacilities was to encourage the practice, not charge them moneyfor it. Cllr Linehan Foley described the bus stop at the post officeis "a total disaster" due to illegal parking pre-empting buses stop-ping in the middle of the road and holding up traffic. "It was crazyto put a stop there in the first place. The post office is the mostused place in town. Nowhere else in the world has a bus stop out-side a post office!" she arguedThe councillor said she had personally monitored the situationover Christmas and observed that even elderly drivers were ille-gally parking. This, along with drivers dropping people off andawaiting their return, was leading to buses unable to pull in.People parking illegally in the adjacent disabled spot further exac-erbated the problem. "So the bus has to stop in the middle of theroad and the whole town is held up," she stated, adding, "We com-plain to taxis and Wizer Bins for the same thing." She wonderedwhat could be done about it. Town engineer Paul Murray said thelocation had been agreed following consultation with Bus Eireannand the Garda. Mayor Casey said only "very selfish people" were abusing theprovision of both the bus and disabled bays. "They are inconve-niencing elderly people who rely on the bus service to get to thepost office and banks," he added. "In Cork city they’d have to walkmiles from a car park," he noted. He did not however, perceive aproblem with people being dropped off "for a few seconds." CllrHennessy suggested moving the stop a few feet forward but CllrBeecher said the bus could not properly park there. He advocatedclamping miscreant vehicles instead. Cllr Sammy Revins said the traffic warden had recently issuedtickets at the post office and those people won’t park there again."It was agreed that increased enforcement might go a long way toresolving the issue. Cllr Beecher asked if the ’cutting’ in the roadat Market Square could be eliminated and was told ’the developer’was responsible. He warned that the yellow box needed extendingat the Lighthouse Hill entrance to Carlton Place as parked carswould hinder emergency service access. Cllr. Murray added that aplanter box on the adjacent footpath is a further problem as itobstructs vision when exiting onto the road. Cllr Beecher alsoasked that the footpath between Meadow Valley and SummerdaleLawn be trimmed back. Tenders: The Town Clerk read three tenders for the Youghal Historic Trailsigns. The applicants were Classicast Ltd, Signiatec Ltd. andCastit Ltd. The quotes ranged from 42,000 to 51,000 approxi-mately and the cost will be covered by Failte Ireland Economic Impact of Irish Walled Town Day (Medieval festi-val) in Youghal in August 24th 2008. The Town Clerk quoted from a detailed survey assessment con-ducted by KPMG on behalf of the Heritage Council. He said anoutlay of 15,000 had reaped an estimated income of 479,000 forthe region. The Youghal event is considered the Republic’s biggestWalled Town Day and, said Mr. Ryan "is being used by theHeritage Council of Ireland as a template for the IWT’s promotionfor 2009." Cllr Burke said such independent confirmation was very gratify-ing. It had produced attendances of over 5,000 on two consecutiveyears, with a 3000% return on investment.

Heritage Council Grants Programme: The Town Clerk said only one application had been received withtwo more expected. He explained it was in lieu of forthcoming’crown reduction’ and ’wind sailing’ on top heavy trees -followingremoval of rotting trees- at St. Mary’s College Garden, along withtree replanting. An application for 90% grant aid would be madefor the approximate 40,000 cost. Shanavine Cul De Sac: There had been no submissions and the route will now be desig-nated a public road. Submission by Rectory Road residentsAssociation: The council have agreed to assume management ofthe area. De Valera Street Car Park: Mayor Olly Casey said he would be sticking by his guns on thislengthy saga, that the residents be given (17) designated parkingspaces. Town Manager Patricia Power repeated that she could notpossibly sanction the decision (taken by the council lastSeptember) to designate the spaces in lieu of subsequent legaladvice that it could be unlawful. Cllr Murray reiterated her stance that she had to represent thetown as a whole and the "fairest" solution would be to give the res-idents non-designated spaces in line with free parking. Otherwisethere would be empty spaces in which nobody could park. Shealso believes the issue of emergency access would be facilitatedby making the street one-way, upward. The mayor’s faceAs the car park now needs to be re-tendered before it can be com-pleted, Cllr Murray advised this be done, the car park opened and,if necessary, the legalities be contested thereafter. Cllr LinehanFoley however, intruded to say that she had arranged for the resi-dents, who are generally unhappy with the furore, to meet theTown Clerk. "This needs to be discussed openly with the residentsinvolved instead of us running round in circles," she said. CllrMurray concurred that the residents "are reasonable people" andbelieved a resolution could be reached. Mayor Casey’s plea that healso be present was accepted, although Cllr Linehan Foleyinformed him she was unhappy with ’the face you have on you,’ bycontrast to his usual "passionate" visage. He responded that hisface was the one with which he was born and hadn’t been "aimedat" her. He added that the centre of Youghal faced having its "res-idents driven out like in Dublin" and being unsafe to walkthrough. Motion from Cllr Liam Burke, seconded by Cllr Mayor OllyCasey: That the council calls on the Government to consider thepurchase of the Kathleen & May as a replacement sail-trainingvessel’ (for the Asgard) Cllr Burke said there is a serious question as to whether theAsgard, which sank last year in the Bay of Biscay, will ever be sal-vaged. Instead, he believed, the wooden, three-masted schoonerthe Kathleen & May would prove a worthy and suitable replace-ment. The historic ship is currently for sale and in danger of beinglost to this part of the world entirely. He noted the asking price is£3m, while the Asgard was insured for 3.8m and the current ster-ling rate made its purchase attractive. The motion was passed. The Town Clerk said a previous request to the government to buythe ship, prior to the Asgard sinking, had not elicited a formalreply. He doubted there is any government money available forsuch a venture and warned against any local authority involve-ment in a would-be purchase due to the "gigantic" short andlongterm costs. Similar ventures in Tralee and Enniscorthy almostbankrupted their councils, he said. However he would forward theproposal to the appropriate government department.

POWERBOAT PROSPECTSHOLED BUT NOT SUNK

By Christy Parker Youghal’s hopes of hosting the P1 World PowerboatChampionships are not going to be realised this year but the aspi-ration is not a dead duck in the water for future years, according toevents organiser Aidan Foley. The Ardmore-based businessman ispart of the Medaza consortium that holds the northern Europeanrights to the race series from 2009-13. "The P1 management saythey are disappointed we could not hold a race this year but havereassured us that the door remains open for the future," he says. There will be no northern European leg of the series in 2009,which is modelled on the Formula 1 Grand Prix world circuit andruns form March to September. Ireland would have accommodat-ed northern Europe’s first foray onto the series and had been pro-visionally pencilled in for the penultimate leg in the last weekendin August. "It’s a shame because our proposal exceeded everyrequirement," says a disappointed Mr. Foley. "If it had been evena year earlier I’m certain we’d have succeeded." The bid was sunk by the sudden nosedive in the global economy.Failte Ireland cannot afford the 35% of funding it was expected toprovide, despite the original 3m total capital cost having beensignificantly reduced. The remaining 65% money was to havebeen largely realised by the corporate sector, which in itself wouldprobably struggle to meet provide now. (Interestingly, Sweden willhost an inaugural event this summer however).Just six months ago Youghal was anticipating near certain partici-pation. The projected statistics foresaw over 150,000 visitors dailyto the region, plus global media coverage, with estimated financialbenefits of 260m over five years. Much hope had been raised thatthe P1 event would also establish Youghal and east Cork as amajor centre for water activities, with the ripple effect creatingthousands of jobs in the process. Council acceptingJanuary’s Town Council meeting accepted the news philosophical-ly. Cllr Barbara Murray commented that the required funding wascategorised as a sports tourism grant and as she understood it, theapplication had been submitted too late for 2009 anyway. Shehoped the company would re-apply for 2010 and in good time."Alternatively they could bankroll it themselves and invoice for itafterwards," she added. Mr. Foley says the funding applicationwas not an issue and that Failte Ireland employ flexible proceduresfor large-scale enterprises. AlternativesTown Clerk Liam Ryan tod the meeting that Mr Foley is commit-ted to promoting Youghal as a premiere location for internationalwater sports and is currently exploring alternative attractions for2009. Cllr Mary Linehan Foley asked if the lesser rated, yet spectacularThundercat racing, which spawned a highly entertaining weekendfestival last June, would return. The Town Clerk said "a lot of dis-cussion" is ongoing with regard to water events for next summer, including the European Thundercats series. "I hope the counciland business community give every support, to whateveremerges," said the councillor. While a Youghal festival seems likely to materialise this year, themega-rich, future-fashioning spectacular that would be P1 remainsanchored to austerity. Youghal’s dream awaits calmer economicwaters before it can be re-launched.

ASK DR. MARCOMEGA 3 FACTS

By Dr. Marc Bajcic B.Sc, D.C., MCAIAn essential fatty acid (EFA) nutrient, inscientific terms, is a nutrient required forhealth that the cells of the body cannotproduce or make; it is a nutrient that mustbe derived from our diet. Without theseessential nutrients proper health is impos-sible.There are two main classifications ofessential fatty acids, omega 3 fatty acidsand omega 6 fatty acids. It is useful tothink of omega 6 fatty acids coming fromcorn, soy, safflower, and sunflower sources. Think of omega 3fatty acids as coming from flax (LNA) or from fish or wild gamemeat (EPA/DHA). The ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fatty acids inboth your diet and your body should be 1:1. Too much omega 6or too little omega 3 leads to improper cell function which causesexcessive inflammation, decreased immune function andincreased susceptibility to virtually every chronic illness includingheart disease, cancer, arthritis, diabetes, depression, Alzheimer’s,osteoporosis, allergies etc.It is a scientific fact that due to our dietary and food processinghabits virtually every person in Industrial or Western nations isboth toxic with omega 6 EFAs and deficient in omega 3 EFAs. Infact research indicates that the ratio of omega 6 to omega 3 fattyacids in the average diet is now up to 20:1 in favor of omega 6!!This is because farmed meat and virtually every packaged or fastfood is loaded with corn, soy, safflower, or sunflower derivatives.Omega 3 essential fatty acids (EFAs) are some of the most crucialessential nutrients for human and other animal health ever identi-fied. Over 2000 scientific studies provide evidence of the impor-tance of EPA and DHA essential fatty acids for the maintenanceand restoration of health and the prevention of disease. EPA andDHA omega 3 EFAs are part of every cell membrane and arerequired to maintain the proper shape, flexibility or fluidity, and"slipperiness" of cell membranes. The flexibility and "slipperi-ness" of cell membranes is important for the flow of blood throughblood vessels and decreasing the risk of high blood pressure, stroke and heart attack. In addition, EFAs are required for proper nerve signal transmission(memory, concentration, cognitive ability, muscle coordinationand strength) and immune function including defense against can-cer. EPA and DHA omega 3 EFAs also play a major role in regu-lating inflammation via substances called prostaglandins. EPAand DHA Omega 3 fatty acids produce anti-inflammatoryprostaglandins while Omega 6 fatty acids produce pro-inflamma-tory prostaglandins. A consultation with your Doctor ofChiropractic not only can help your body’s natural healing abilityby removing interferences to your nervous system, but alsoimprove your overall health naturally, without drugs or medica-tion.

Open Letter to Sponsors and Volunteers of European

Beach Challenge re:P1 Powerboating 2009

The organising committee of the European Beach Challengeregrets to inform its sponsors and volunteers that it has receivedconfirmation from ’Medaza’ - the Event Delivery Company, thatunfortunately Youghal will not be one of the locations on the P1Powerboating circuit for 2009.’Medaza’ had proposed Youghal as the preferred location in Irelandto the Governing body of P1 to host the event - following the suc-cess of the European Beach Challenge. Youghal in fact had beenprovisionally included in the calendar for 2009, but only on thebasis that funding would be forthcoming from Failte Ireland. Theapplication for funding was made by ’Medaza’ for this event. Therefore, the entire event hinged on Failte Ireland support, astheir contribution would make up 35% of funding. The majorityof the balance was to come from commercial interests, which wereall fully lined up.’Medaza’ were informed on 9th January 2009 that ’P1 in Youghal’ticked all the boxes when evaluated and in fact exceeded bench-mark requirements. However, the current economic climatemeant that the budget for Sports Tourism Funding was drasticallyreduced and therefore Failte Ireland would be unable to commit toany funding of the event.Despite this disappointing set-back, Youghal is still in a positionto promote itself as a premier location of for Watersports interna-tionally.At a ceremony recently held at the Earls Court Boatshow, the 2008Thundercat European Beach Challenge was awarded the ’BestRace’ award. This prestigious title was awarded by the ’UIMEuropean & RYA National Championship Awards’. It was givenin recognition of both the on-water organisation and the support-ing shore-side festival. This is the first time this award has beengiven to an Irish venue and testifies to the location of Youghal asan excellent environment for water-based events, and the ability ofthe local organisers to run an international event of this calibre.Once again the organising committee wishes to thank all its spon-sors and volunteers for their support of the European BeachChallenge Event. Undoubtedly this event in itself will go towardspositioning Youghal as a key location on the south coast for water-based activities and future events.Issued by: The Youghal Socio-Economic Development Group

DEVALERA STREET RESIDENTS MAKE

PARKING PROPOSALSBy Christy Parker

DeValera Street residents availed of the opportunity to air theirviews on the streets permit parking dilemma (see Town Councilreport in this issue) when they met with Town Clerk Liam Ryan atthe council’s offices last Thursday. About a dozen residents attend-ed the meeting, which was organised by Cllr Mary Linehan Foley. Cllr Liam Burke also attended, though Mayor Olly Casey wasabsent. Cllrs Burke and Casey have argued vehemently for 17 des-ignated spaces (out of 37) to be allocated to the residents when thenew car park eventually opens, in lieu of their vehicles beingremoved from the street. The initiative was passed by the councilbut later deemed impractical and possibly illegal by legal opinion. The meeting resulted in the residents proposing a compromisewhereby they would forego designated spaces in return for per-mits that would allow them to avail of the car park indefinitely, spaces permitting, as well as retain their current option of parkingon the laneway. The lane would become one-way (upwards) with,by consequence, traffic accessing the main street being routeddown Church Lane. Before being sanctioned, the proposals will need to meet theacceptance of the street’s other residents, the emergency servicesand, possibly, residents in Church Lane. The latter considerationmay -or may not- provoke debate, given the street’s narrow dimen-sions and the resultant increase in traffic on the main access routeto the heritage hum that is the College Gardens and St. Mary’sChurch. "The DeValera Street residents are to return to the TownClerk within a fortnight," says Cllr Linehan Foley.

HOTEL AND MARINAFOR YOUGHAL

Cllr Barbara Murray recently welcomed Cork County Councilsdecision to proceed with advertising for submissions for the pro-vision of a 150/200 bed hotel and marina, to be located at the slob-lands Youghal. The Advertising for submissions was posted in theIrish Examiner on Friday December 12th with a closing date ofFebruary 20th 2009.The delay in bringing the project to this point, was due to the pro-vision of access for the proposed treatment plant being secured. This process is now complete. Although current economic condi-tions are not favourable towards investment in hotels in particular, there is considerable interest from both local and regional devel-opers in undertaking this project. The evaluations will be conducted over a six week period afterFebruary 20th. At this point Cllr Barbara Murray would be hope-ful that a suitable developer will have met all the relevant criteriaset out in the original submission. This will conclude a processthat has been consistently pursued by Cllr Murray over the last twoyears and will hopefully result in the long awaited Marina andHotel for Youghal. There is no doubt, but that the people ofYoughal will be watching the progress of this project very careful-ly!!!

YOUGHAL UNITED SOCCER CLUB

Juniors! January 11th, 2009 Report: Anthony Horgan. It is with regret to announce that the Youghal United Junior teamis to be withdrawn from the league with immediate effect. Thesquad has been going through some rough times recently in tryingto fill a team at weekends especially on Sunday mornings. A goodmanagement team was in place in Pat McCarthy, John Heaphy andRay Fraser and the committee are at a loss as to why the playersdidn’t give them commitment at the weekends. Also, I would liketo add that at the beginning of the season a delegate team from theclub went to meet with the Munster Senior League board to put acase forward and convince them that the Juniors would see out theseason if they allowed us entry into the league as this is not thefirst time this has happened. Now the club is left with egg on it’sface again and in the foreseeable future will find it impossible toenter a junior team. It has cost the club in fine’s for not fulfillingfixtures and also lost a bond that was put up at the start of the sea-son. In conclusion everyone is disappointed with the playersinvolved and finally I would like to thank Pat McCarthy, JohnHeaphy and Ray Fraser for their time and effort.Seniors. January 11th, 2009 Youghal United 0 - 1 Fermoy. The lads missed a chance to close the gab on league leadersFermoy recently with a one nil defeat at home. Youghal will befrustrated with this result as they had enough chances to get aresult from the game. This weekend’s fixture fell foul to the weath-er conditions but all eyes will be on next weeks fixture away to fel-low promotion rivals Ballinhassig. Youghal will be looking to getsomething from this fixture so they can keep them at bay.

Youghal started welland were on top for most of the game only to be caught offside ona number of occasions as Nufarm were a well organised outfit atthe back. On the other hand Youghal were unlucky not to take thelead on a number of occasions when Danny Walsh hit the uprightand Ronan O’ Sullivan had a good effort tipped onto the crossbar.Ronan however did pop up to decide this match with a great strike.Overall this was a good performance by the whole team and a spe-cial mention to Connor Finn who stepped in to replace our regularkeeper.

Annual General Meeting.Cois Bhride C.L.G. is holding it’s A.G.M. in the Shamrock Inn,Knockanore, next Friday 23rd January commencing at 8.30 sharp. All aspects of the activities of Cois Bhride in 2008 will be dis-cussed and all are welcome. For anyone who wishes to raise anyissues with the club over it’s activities on and off the field in thepast year, this is the place to do it, and all new members and indeedanyone who might wish to comtribute to the running of the clubare more than welcome. Remember, this Friday, 23rd January,8.30 sharp in Knockanore.2008, how was it for you?It was the year Waterford finally made it to an All-Ireland finalafter 45 years, the game started at 3.30, and finished at 3.30.... DeLa Salle won their first County hurling title, then followed that upby winning Munster. Tallow reached their first senior semi-final inquite a while, but lost out to De La Salle. On the club front, CoisBhride U-8’s to 12’s performed very well with our U-11 hurlerswinning a Western ground hurling title (div.1), but losing in theCo. final to Ballygunner by a single point. They also did well inthe football league, reaching the knockout stages. Our U-12hurlers also did well, beating Lismore to qualify for a WesternFinal against Dungarvan, which they unfortunately lost after agood effort. Our U-14 hurlers also reached a Western final, butthey were to taste defeat also in this. In the county they won theirfirst four matches, but were knocked out in the semi-final.Unfortunately our U-16’s and minor teams didn’t fare too well lastyear, we seem to have a difficulty in fielding teams at these agelevels owing to small sized panels. However our U-21 hurlers puta bit of icing on the cake when they succeeded in winning a coun-ty title late in the year, so our congratulations to them. Overall, amixed bag, some good, some not, but plenty to be optimistic aboutfor the coming year. The Celtic Tiger may be well and trulyextinct, but Cois Bhride is alive and kicking!Equipment officer.John Hennessy, our excellent equipment officer, would dearly liketo have all outstanding bottles, first aid or other gear returned tohim before Friday night if possible. So a message to all our selec-tors, please check your car boots and garages etc. and give back allstray gear please?Sean Leahy R.I.P.Cois Bhride C.L.G would like to sympathise with the family andfriends of Sean Leahy, Glendine, who passed away recently.Sean’s grandson Colin donned the Cois Bhride colours just a fewyears ago. JOHNS SHIP COMES INChristy Parker talks to a Youghal writer whose debut novel is setto rules the waves. The writing talents of Youghal man John Stack arepoised for global recognition as his debut novel hitsthe shelves this month. Top publishers HarperCollins won the rights to his book, Ship of Rome, and have commissioned a further two novels to forma trilogy called Masters of the Sea. The series, "ahistorical fiction" is set in the Punic wars wagedbetween the emerging Roman navy and the Carthaginian Empirefrom 264-201 BC. John, 36, is the son of Gerry and Kitty Stack, Kilcoran Park andlives near Rochestown with wife Adrienne, daughter Zoe, sevenand two year-old twins Amy and Andrew. His commission carriesa six-figure sum over four years. It would be entirely apt if John’s books proved ’moving’ -as hewrites from the passenger seat of his green Opel Zafira! He strug-gled with domestic distraction when embarking on Ship of Romein March 2007 and achieved a semblance of a solution by using afriend’s house. One day, on forgetting his key, he drove to a near-by car-park overlooking Cork harbour and started up his laptop. There, doors locked, he found "perfect privacy." Furthermore, hehad "the option of a different vista every day!", he recalls. John’s interest in military history was sparked in teenage years byhis father’s reading recommendations. The attraction proved last-ing, through adult years acquiring a BA and MBA in BusinessAdministration. At some stage he encountered the Punic warswhich, come March 2007, inspired the man who had never beforewritten anything "other than essays," to start a novel. He would write betwixt his ’day job’ as a business manager withWright Line, an American, Cork-based office furniture manufac-turer. From early 2007 he knew the firm was pondering closure inCork and his work uncertainty accentuated his writing, aboutwhich he confided only in his wife. This proved convenient whenthree literary agents rejected his manuscript. He undertook a re-write, researched advice on publishing for first time authors andin August 2007 sent the book to a London agency with establishedconnections in historic fiction.September 2007 brought two contrasting and life-changingannouncements: the agency would marketing his book to publish-ers from January 2008 and his ten years with Wright Line wouldend come November when the company decamped to India. He reflects on redundancy: "My greatest fear stemmed from theuncertainty about my future following ten years in which the pay-cheques had unfailingly arrived. But at least I had seen it comingand saw the chance to do something I had always wanted to do. IfI’d been caught unawares I’m not sure if Ship of Rome would havebeen written. Uncertainty breeds an overwhelming need for secu-rity and for most of us that means a new job, maybe better, maybeworse, maybe the same. For others it drives them towards a newcareer and a complete change in their lives. " "I now feel that perhaps redundancy brings opportunity, great andsmall -sometimes glaring, sometimes hidden; opportunities totravel, to begin a new career, to immigrate, to follow some wishthat has lain dormant in the routine of working-life. Just perhaps, redundancy can be a chance to discover another road that younever knew existed." As he searched for another job, the book sat waiting for Januaryon his agent’s desk, cradling between its covers the possibility, ifnot the promise, of a new future for its author. In January’s dyingdays came news that both Penguin and Harper Collins wanted therights. "I felt numb, totally unable to absorb the news," he recallswith delight. Harper Collins triumphed. He describes Ship of Rome as "about the early Roman navy andhow, from a relatively small domain in the southern half of Italy,it defeated the mighty Carthaginian Empire that ruled theMediterranean. It doesn’t read like a history novel," he proceeds"but has wider appeal, with interwoven plots. There are two

-Atticus, a Greek naval captain -of a conquered race and unlovedbut respected by the Romans- and Septimus, a centurion on boardhis ship." The story also focuses on "the view of ordinary men caught up inhistory," Through this prism, he captures the crucial role of a newdevice called the corvus. "It was a spiked boarding ramp thatallowed the Romans fast and lethal access to the enemy’s ships. Itprobably won them their victory, yet nobody is credited withinventing or designing it," says John. "In a wider context, Rome’svictory led to the subsequent formation of its empire and the even-tual evolvement of modern Europe. The Carthaginians were ofNorth African extract and we can assume Europe today would befundamentally different if they had persevered." John has seldom ventured forth in a boat himself but does creditYoughal with influence on his success. "Influences persist. If yougrow up by the sea, it stays with you forever. Its entirely possibleif I had not been reared in Youghal, I might not have been inclinedto write that kind of book," he concludes. Then again, maybe itwas the car parks that inspired him.

(thelocal coffin maker) and Mickey, their nephew, played by PadraigWalsh a wanna-be boxer who is an apprentice toJerreen, and tocomplete the crew there is Windy, Badgers next door neighbourand local butcher played by Brendan Walsh. We welcome Brendan and Padraig Walsh - father and son - to ourcast for the first time - though this is not their first time on stage,Brendan has an acting past with Killeagh macra and Padraig is arising star on the stage. So what is the play about? Having read of an unsuccessful bankrobbery in Blarney, Badger, egged on by Jerreen and Windy, plotsout a robbery of his own, just to show how it could be done prop-erly. You wont believe the mayhem, accusations, confusion andshenanigans that follow - it is laughter all the way. They say that laughter is the shock absorber that eases the blowsof life, in the times we live in this is what we all need - a goodlaugh. This performance is not to be missed and with laughter and enjoy-ment assured an with all the comforts available at InchCommunity Centre, it is a great night out for all concerned.Booking in advance of these shows to secure your seat can bemade by telephoning (024) 95252 between the hours of 5pm and9.30pm - curtain 8.15pm sharp.

YOUGHAL GAA CLUB NEWSCLUB A.G.M.The Senior Club held their A.G.M. on Thursday night the 9th ofDecember in Club Aras. In front of a sizeable attendance the veryreverend Fr. Bernard Cotter was elected as President. In hisaddress to the meeting he expressed what an honour it was to beselected to the role and how it was a very special honour to be fol-lowing on from the late Liam Moynihan. Many tributes wereheard throughout proceedings to Liam who was a hugely popularmember of the Club and society in general. Fr. Cotter played hisfirst game for the Club in a schools tournament in Midleton in1948 and has been a member of the Club ever since. Althoughretired now and living in Cork he is an everpresent at Club func-tions and will be a popular choice as president. There was a deci-sion made at the meeting that the president be changed every 3years as there is a long list of very destinguished vice presidentswho may never get the chance to become president. The executivewas returned as it was last year with the exception of AlanHennessy who is stepping down as Fixtures secretary. Alan hasserved the Club as PRO and Fixtures Secretary over the last 13Years and Chairman Sean Ring paid tribute to Alan for all he hasdone in that time. The biggest topic of discussion on the night wasthat of the Schools being unable to play in any competitions fromJanuary 1st as the funding for substitute teachers will not allow forteachers to have time to go to these games. Little has been madeof this in the media and most people are unaware of this being thecase. This could potentially have a huge bearing on young peoplenot playing sports and their is concern that their will be a fall offin the numbers playing Gaelic games aswell as the huge emphasisthat has been put on physical education in schools because of obe-sity levels rising in Ireland being eroded somewhat. The Club willbe in contact with all the relevent parties about this situation toexpress it’s concerns over the next few weeks. Club Officials for the coming Year are Sean Ring as Chairman,Ken Bulman as Vice Chairman, Assumpta Parker as Secretary,Ned O’Connell as Treasurer and David Kilgannon as P.R.O. Therole of Fixtures Secretary will be announced after the first Clubmeeting in the New Year.On the playing front it was decided to have just one league teamnext year as it is proving difficult to field two teams for a fullleague campaign in Football. There will however be two teams forChampionship, one Intermediate and one Junior. Mick Sheehanhas the task of getting football back on track in the Club flankedby Philip Monaghan and Eoin O Suchru. Mick is finalising hisback room team at the moment and their is a buzz about footballin the club that has not been seen for a few years with many play-ers already committing to giving their best efforts for the cause.U21 Football will be looked after by Maurice O’Mahony, MauriceCronin and David Kilgannon. This has been a very successfulcombination over the last few years at underage level and are step-ping up to the adult club for the first time. Pat Mackey is againlooking after the Minors and with a Team that did the double atu16 this could be a very exciting year for football fans.No Hurling Management team is in place at the moment but dis-cussions are ongoing and the Club are optemistic they will gettheir Man. Sean Ring and John Parker will again be looking afterthe Juniors and if the Senior Manager approached takes the posi-tion I can see a great year ahead for hurling also. The enigmaticKen Bulman is taking the u21 hurlers, lets hope he didn’t pick uptoo many bad habits accross the bridge last year or get a feel forlosing. Con Spillane will look after the Minors which will be adificult job with limited resources but his experience will counter-act this.We have underachieved in both codes over the last few years buttheir is an air of excitement and optimism building about nextyears prospects that I have not witnessed before in my 5 Yearswith the Club and hopefully some of this will lead to long summerevenings challenging for honours on all fronts.ST.STEPHENS DAY GET TOGETHER IN MEMORY OFDAN COLEMANA large crowd gathered at Club Aras on St Stephens morning for a Hurling and Football tournament organised by the ColemanFamily to mark the upcoming tenth anniversary of the passing ofDan. It was great to see such a large gathering for what was alsobilled as a celebration of it being 10 Years this Year since the foot-ballers won the Junior Championship. The Hurlers and Footballersof 99 took on their present Day counterparts in two very compet-itive matches with plenty of good talent both past and

present on show. The 99 hurlers lost out by a couple of points butthe footballers gained revenge for this in the second game. Patronswere treated to a hot toddy during the games to help offset the coldweather and possibly the onset of the Christmas hangover. Theirwas a great atmosphere in the Club Bar after where BrendanColeman presented trophies to the winning connections.Hopefully this can become an anual event that helps former play-ers and visitors to stay in touch with the Club, while also givingpeople a chance to remember the highs and lows of days past.CHAMPIONSHIP DRAWS FOR 2009The Intermediate footballers will be in action against Canovee inthe first round of the Championship with the losers playing eitherEire Og or Delaneys. With a big emphasis being put on theFootball this Year under the guidance of Mick Sheehan lets hopewe will have a long Year chearing on the Youghal Boys. Trainingis starting this Wednesday at 7:30 sharp with a full attendanceexpected. The hurlers will be up against Mallow in the first round with thelosers playing Douglas or Newcestown. Their was no more than apuck of a ball between Youghal and Mallow last Year so nochances will be taken in the build up to this one and having to pos-sibly face their victors from last year Douglas should they losewill be an added incentive to come out on top.CRAFT FAIRA craft fair was held in the hall on Sunday 14th December. Theevent was organised and run by Sean and Noreen Oliphant and theClub would like to thank both of them for their efforts. There were25 stalls on the Day selling a vast array of items from Bread to oldcoins, Candles to flowers and Dolls to baskets. Over 600 peoplepassed through the doors on the day with many leaving with thatone off gift or simply a loaf of bread or some farm house cheese. The next event of it’s kind will be the return of the Car Boot Saleon January 11th. The last one was a great success despite somevery stormy weather with over 30 stalls and it is hoped to increasethis even further over the next few months to establish Youghal asone of the biggest markets in Munster. On Friday night last 19th December the Club held a party for ClubMembers and Lotto sellers. Their was a raffle on the night con-fined to lotto sellers only and the following names were drawn.Turkey Vouchers: Alan Geary, Hair Design and Aoife Lawlor.Bottle of Wine: Richard Byrne, Angeline Murphy, Carmel Forrestand Brian Coleman.Box of Biscuits: Mary Farrell, Cathy & Henry Collins, TommyColeman Snr. and William Kennefick.TEENAGE DISCO:Club Aras again rocked to the beat of hip hop and r & b asTeenXtreme brought their underage disco roadshow to Town.Over 200 revellers danced the night away helped by two ofIrelands hottest rap artists. It was the only place in Ireland that sawsnow on the night as two snow machines pumped out the whitestuff to add that little extra bit of atmosphere to the occasion. Thenext big night for the Teenagers will be over valentines weekendwhere their are a few more surprises planned. Watch this space forfurther details.COUNTY BOARD DRAWCongratulations to Fintan Crowley on winning a night atCurraheen Park Stadium in the December Draw. Hope you have agreat night Fintan. Tickets are still available for the rest of theDraws and we would encourage people to purchase these as up to60% of the proceeds come directly back to the Club. Tickets canbe obtained from any Committee member.CLUB LOTTOStill no winner of the Jackpot that is well in excess of 10 grand. The winner of the Holiday for December was Margaret Barryfrom Knockaverry who bought the ticket from Angela Pomphrett.Heres hopeing you enjoy the break.JUVENILE TRAININGWith the New Year upon us the youngest members of our club willbe back in action on the second Saturday in January. The Clubwish to extend an invitation to all families in the parish of Youghalto bring their kids along to have a go. The only rules are that thechildren be aged 5 or attending main stream school. Coachingstarts at 10am each and every Saturday with under 8 and 7’s upfirst and the younger members from 11 o’clock. This is great funfor the kids and parents alike and we would encourage parents tostay around for the hour and watch the laughter and sometimestears that inevitably ensue.
