WELCOME GATHERING CUM PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

“THE UNKNOWN CAPACITY”Centennial College Welcome Gathering cum Presentation of Awards was held on 18 September 2017 at the campus to welcome our new students. Scholarships and awards were presented to the students who demonstrated outstanding academic and personal achievement. Professor Edward K.Y. Chen, Chairman of the Council of Centennial College and Professor William K.M. Lee, President of Centennial College delivered welcome speeches to all new students, encouraging them to understand the importance of a liberal arts education and wishing them a meaningful life at Centennial College. This year we are also honoured to receive a donation worthy of HK$180,000 inclusive of matching funds from Dr Lam Kin Chung from the Lam Kin Chung Morning Sun Charity Fund to set up the "Belt and Road Exchange Scholarship” for our students.

We applaud our scholarship recipients and awardees and welcome our freshmen of 2017 to the College family! The TEDx talk is an internationally

recognised event, whereby speakers from different backgrounds and industries share their wisdom and knowledge with the audience. Our students organised the third TEDx talk on 10 November 2017. The theme was “The Unknown Capacity”.

The event featured a talk by each of the three special guests. Ms Lynn Yau, CEO of the Absolutely Fabulous

Theatre Connection talked about arts and what and how individuals can contribute to this world. Renowned filmmaker and TV host Mr SeanLee-Davies shared his work with sustainable consumption and environmentalism through his fine art photographic work. Ms Sky Siu, executive director of KELY Support Group argued the importance of overcoming one’s life obstacles to help better confront uncertainties.

To help students adapt to College life and to strengthen their relationship with the College community, the College launched the Personal Tutor Scheme in September 2017. Through this scheme, students are also provided with the opportunity to relate their learning to the real world, beyond the formal curriculum as well as to their future career development.

Peer Tutors meet with students at least twice throughout the academic year to engage in activities either on or off-campus which are designed to support student’s personal development. The 1st meeting with Personal Tutors was held on 22 September 2017. Students got to know each other with tutors. Tutors and students alike look forward to a productive and rewarding mentoring experience. Building an open and enjoyable relationship of mutual respect is the key to achieving the goal.

The radio programme “MLA on Air” co-organised by Centennial College, Peter F. Drucker Academy and Metro Finance has been well received since its launch in March 2017. In commemorating this significant programme, three parties joined hands to host the inaugural “Management as a Liberal Art” Symposium on 21 September 2017 at the Wang Gungwu Theatre, HKU. The Symposium brought together renowned speakers from various industries and academia to discuss today’s hot topics in management along with Peter F. Drucker’s management philosophy. It was a great success and attracted over 290 participants. At the same time, the event was live streamed on the College's Facebook and Metro Radio Broadcast,

attracting more than 1,000 views. This major event not only strengthened the image of the College as an advocator of MLA but also reinforced the public's awareness of MLA.

In the first part of the Symposium, Professor William K.M. Lee, College President kicked off the Symposium with his welcome speech. Professor Edward K.Y. Chen, the Council Chairman of Centennial College then delivered an inspiring speech on “Management as an Art based on Liberal Arts”. It was followed by a 15-min video recording speech, titled “The Practice of Management as a Liberal Art” by Professor Joseph A. Maciariello, Research Director of Drucker Lab. A motivating

keynote speech was come after by Mr Bernard Chan, President of Asia Financial Holdings Ltd. The panel discussion sessions among the guest speakers were facilitated by Dr Royce Yuen, CEO of MaLogic and Ms Ruthia Wong, Vice-President and General Manager Hong Kong of Mead Johnson Nutrition (HK) Ltd in the second part of the Symposium. 12 notable guest speakers from the radio programme gathered together and discussed such topics as “People: Personal Effectiveness”, “People: Leadership as a Liberal Art” and “Wealth Creation”. Their insightful sharing made the Symposium more rewarding and memorable.

Organised by the Office of Student Success, this seven-day cultural exchange tour to Vladivostok took place in late May 2017 and offered our students a unique experience in the city’s multicultural environment of the Far Eastern part of Russia. This site is of historical and military importance near as it is to the three borders of China, Russia and North Korea.

The tour included a visit to the Far Eastern Federal University (FEFA) on Russky Island, where students met with FEFA students. A sharing session was arranged, including a university tour and lunch with FEFA students. Other sites visited included the Russian Orthodox Chapel, the antique tram station, the Sportivnaya Market and the S-56 Submarine Museum. This tour

received positive feedback, students were all impressed by the differences in the display of hospitality and manners between Vladivostok and Hong Kong.

Another educational tour organised by the Office of Student Success in August; this two-week programme took students to Australia. The main focus of this programme was to boost students’ confidence in English speaking, listening and comprehension during their stay at the University of Queensland. Cultural activities and visits were also included as part of the programme experience.

Students were provided with homestay accommodation in selected families on the basis of two students per family. Homestay has played an important role in the programme by fostering a caring environment in which students can practise their English and learn about Australian culture and ways of life.

The Office of Student Success has organised a series of Summer Engagement Programmes for prospective students titled “The Global Village 2017” with the aim of increasing student enrolment in early June to July. The programmes emphasise an experiential learning approach to understanding the interconnectedness of planet Earth and the nurturing of students’ attitudes towards societal issues, and environmental and wildlife conservation, in a number of educational centers and theme parks, such as Hong Kong Disneyland, Crossroads Foundation Global Xperience, WWF Hoi Ha Wan Marine Life Centre and Ocean Park.

The programmes began with icebreaking and team-building activities on the theme of “Global Village”. Professors provided prospective students with an introduction to liberal arts and demonstrated brief mock lectures on “Globalisation”. Current students were actively engaged in the programmes to mingle with prospective students.

ENGAGEMENT PROGRAMMES FOR PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS IN SUMMER 2017

ORIENTATION CAMP (organised by the Students’ Union)

Orientation Camp 2017 was organised by Students' Union “Endeavour”. Funny and challenging "Marvel" themed activities were all designed for new students. The camp successfully provided new students with an opportunity to

meet and engage with other first year students. They also had the opportunity to discover more about the culture of the College.

INDUCTION DAY 2017Induction Day took place in early September. As a gesture of support, welcome gifts were given by the Office of Student Success to new students to get the new academic year off to a good start. They attended the lunch programme before the “Personal Ethics Talk” provided by the Independent Commission Against Corruption. STUDYING AT CENTENNIAL: REFLECTIONS FROM EXCHANGE AND

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS

Sean Peloso Exchange student

My name is Sean Peloso and I’m on exchange from Lesley University in Boston, Massachusetts for the Fall 2017 semester. Coming to Centennial College and Hong Kong has changed my life. The curriculum and academic goals here at Centennial are familiar to me as Lesley is also a liberal arts institution but, in contrast, the culture and energy of Hong Kong and its residents is what makes all the difference. Students and professionals alike are thinking with global perspectives. I've been exposed to such a large pool of political, social, and religious ideologies on an ever-growing list of subjects. Diversity plays a role within the culinary world as well, which has been a delicious whirlwind of fun for me to explore. Doing this exchange programme has made me better accustomed to learning as much as I can from people, places, and things far different from my past experiences.

Bibi Fatimah BA Year 1

The balance between academic and social life is equally distributed in Centennial College. Students find themselves so comfortable engaging with active societies and schemes. The outstanding one I can name is the Mentorship Scheme where each student is allowed to choose their own mentoring Professor for the entire year. People are more connected to one another due to the small size of the College - I just love it! Studying at Centennial College is a unique, irreplaceable and unforgettable path to wisdom and knowledge.

Kevin Tan BA Year 1

Centennial College is a really great experience for me. There are students from different backgrounds and cultures which has allowed me to expand my knowledge of the world. Everyone here is really friendly, everywhere you look there's a friendly face. The Professors are extremely helpful, they have the time to answer my questions about the current lecture and they also explain what they taught us really well.

FIRST YEAR SYMPOSIUM 2017-18

HOMECOMING LUNCHEON

Centennial College organised a “First Year Symposium” for students in their first year of study at the College, which was held on 8 December 2017 on the campus. This symposium, which is set to become an annual event, aims to enable students to acquire a better understanding of the spirit of a liberal arts education. This year, the theme of the symposium was environmental and ethical issues. The Symposium required students to give a presentation in a setting resembling that of a professional conference: Oral Presentations and Poster Presentations (Academic Posters).

At the end of the Symposium, guests, teachers and students voted for the “Best Poster Award” and “Best Presenting Team Award”. There was a lively atmosphere as students exchanged their views on a range of environmental and ethical issues.

It was a wonderful occasion to celebrate students on their return to campus after they had graduated. The alumni (class of 2017) were warmly welcomed on 14 October 2017 for a luncheon reunion. The event got off to a

shimmering start with a switch-on ceremony mastered by Professor Edward K.Y. Chen and Professor Chan Wing Wah. About 90 former students and Professors gathered at the party and enjoyed the conviviality of the occasion.
