From the outset, BEKA proposed theuse of 85W solar panels to ensure ahighly efficient photovoltaic conversionof energy, to be stored in batteries of asuitable size.

This would ensure that sufficient energyis stored by the battery to providelighting even after five days of heavycloud cover.

At the same time, the lifetime andperformance of the battery is enhanced.

A symmetrical post top luminaire, theBEKARAY, was chosen on the basis thatit is most appropriate in places wheregeneral area and security lighting isrequired.

The commissioning of the installationtowards the end of last year hasattracted a lot of interest by thecommunity and local councillors, whichresulted in greater awareness by variousenergy-conscious partners.

It is without doubt that this energysource will be beneficial to improvingthe quality of life of communities, especially in areas where theconventional form of energy is non-existent or its installation isgeographically and environmentallyproblematic.

The preparation works for theSoccer World Cup in 2010 arealready in full swing. BEKA

(Pty) Ltd was awarded the contractfor the supply, delivery and aiming offloodlights for upgrading the SinabaStadium in Daveyton, the GeorgeThaba Stadium in Sharpville, and theH.M. Pitjie Stadium in Mamelodi.

These stadia will be used as trainingand preparation venues for the 2010Soccer World Cup.

BEKA designed all three stadia tocolour television standards, in

accordance with FIFA requirements, which resulted in 194 x BEKA 2kWMH STADIALUX and 12 x 1kWPROJECTOLUX luminaires beingrequired for each installation.

The total contract amount for eachstadium was just under R14 million.

The design team was lead byMr James Du Plessis, project engineerof ARUP, and the electrical engineerwas Mr Sidney de Jongh of AftecConsulting. The mast supplier andlighting contractor was Le BlancIndustries/Lighting Structures.

The companies BEKA (Pty) Ltd,Lighting Structures (Pty) Ltd,OSRAM (Pty) Ltd and Sectional

Poles (Pty) Ltd jointly organised a one-day seminar on Sports Lighting, atGallagher Estate in Midrand, Gauteng, last year.

This Seminar was targeted atMunicipalities, Electrical Engineers,Sports Organisations and ElectricalContractors.

In view of the 2010 Soccer World Cupand other major sporting events being

planned in Southern Africa, thisSeminar covered relevant technicaltopics, aimed to increase the lightingstandards in this country, and therebymeeting international sports lightingstandards.

The organising companies are themarket leaders in their respectivefields and their technical staffpresented the following topics:

• The Basics of Sports Lighting

• Requirements of the DifferentSports (Conventional & Television)

• Recommended Practices for SportsLighting

• Light Sources for Sports Lighting

• Monopole Mast Design

• Stadia Masts

New products have beendemonstrated, such as instant hot re-strike for 2kW Lamps, based upon newsolid state techniques, and is nowavailable at a much reduced pricewhen compared to previoustechnologies.

The participants commended theevent highly in their feedbackquestionnaires .

It has been appreciated that such anevent, which has brought togethercompetitors in order to share theirknowledge and experience, is stronglysupported.

This constructive environment can onlybe advantageous to the LightingIndustry, and many would like to seesuch a jointly organised event to occurmore often.

The organisers are proud that thisseminar, with an attendance of morethan 200 persons, has been the mostsuccessful Lighting Seminar everorganised in South Africa.

The new projects include thefollowing:

1. The Bakwena Platinum N4Highway cutting through town, which had to be lit to A1standards as per SABS 098

2. The P16/1 road to Johannesburg

3. The Old Pretoria Road leading toKroondal

4. The Thabazimbi Road

5. The P2/2 Swartruggens Road tothe Phokeng Road

6. The N4 Swartruggens Roadintersection

Approximately 560 BEKASUNluminaires were used for therefurbishment of existinginstallations.

Four contractors, namely TauElectrical, FDT Electrical, T&WElectrical and Mayivute Electrical,

were appointed to complete theproject within three months.

During the design stage, AMPCONConsulting Engineers gave carefulconsideration to luminance, glare, and overall and longitudinaluniformities. The designs wereoptimised with BEKA products toachieve the best possible spacing, whilst still complying with the SABS098 Standard, and thus achieve thelowest cost per kilometre.

BEKA is proud to be the successfulsupplier of all the street lighting inthis project. Approximately 1200BEKASUN 250W and 400W HighPressure Sodium luminaires weresupplied, using the OSRAM 4Y lamptechnology, which offers increasedlamp life, and a substantial increasein lumen output.

By optimising the reflector systemtogether with the 4Y lamp, theabove-mentioned project used

considerably less poles andluminaires per kilometre than anycompetitor, thus reducing capitalcost and operating cost.

Anew decorative bulkhead rangewas added to BEKA’s successfulrange of square (SERIES 20) and

round (SERIES 30) decorative bulkheads, namely the oblong range of the SERIES40. The luminaire is designed for wallmounting applications and reduces thewasted upward light by means of ashield, which is part of the luminairehousing.

The BEKA SERIES 40 range is designedfor a single CFL light source of up to26D TC-D.

The luminaire body is manufactured ofhigh pressure die-cast aluminium, using

the most corrosion-resistant LM6 alloy, and is finished with a structuredpowder coat, available in black, whiteand silver.

The diffuser is available in a clear, prismatic and opaque version.

As successfully done in the otherdecorative bulkhead models, we haveincorporated the gasket in a groove ofthe diffuser. This ensures that gasketsare not damaged during installationand, therefore, provides a more reliableIP66 protection of the enclosure.

Due to the use of a highly efficientreflector, this luminaire provides a

luminous output, which results inlighting levels higher than normallyprovided by luminaires of twice thelamp lumen.

Therefore, its use in wall- or wallperimeter installations yields low powerconsumption per length.

The recommended spacing to heightratio for a clear, prismatic luminaire is6:1. This means that at a height of 2.5mabove ground, the recommendedspacing would be 15m.

By offering an alternative to the lowquality of mainly imported bulkheads,BEKA has responded to the needs of itscustomers with this luminaire.

BEKA wishes to introduce to itsclients the new generation ofPower Switch units, the Timed

Power Switch.

The Timed Power Switch differs fromthe previous Power Switch version, inthat it has an incorporated timer, which alleviates the necessity of anexternal control wire.

Let us recall the workings of a PowerSwitch:

A Power Switch is an electronicdevice, which switches the impedanceof the ballast from the nominal ratingof typically 400W to 250W. In theprocess the lamp reduces the lightoutput and the power consumption. In the past the switching wastriggered by a control wire, which, byapplying either 0V or 230V, switchedthe status of the light accordingly. The disadvantage of this system wasthe more expensive costs for theadditional control wire, which had tobe provided inside the supply cable.

However, with the new generationof Timed Power Switch, the circuitryis as follows:

One can see that no external wiringis provided.

The timed switching functions are asfollows:

• 5 hours after switch-on the lightoutput is reduced from 100% to50%.

• 11 hours after switch-on the lightoutput is increased from 50% upto 100% again until switch-off.

The timer starts its operation fromswitch-on.

The behaviour of the Timed PowerSwitch at power interruptions is asfollows:

• The Timed Power Switch detectsshort mains interruptions between3 to 15 seconds without startingthe timing sequence from zero. Inother words: The threshold issomewhere between 3 sec and 15sec. It depends on the actual mainsvoltage at the moment when themains voltage is interrupted.

• However, if the mains interruptionis longer than this period theTimed Power Switch is starting thesequence from zero again.

• If the lamp is in the 5h to 11hperiod, where it operates at 50%,and the power is interrupted for

up to 3 to 15 seconds causing thelamp to extinguish, and the TimedPower Switch does not start fromzero again, then the lamp willrestart at full load and remain sofor 3 minutes, before it “fallsback” to a 50% operation.

This ensures that the lamp starts at full power, therefore providing the correct physical conditions inside the lamp burner during the start-up phase.

Due to the compelling advantages ofthis technology, BEKA wishes topromote this Timed Power Switch forall 400W HPS street lightapplications, whether it is a new oran existing installation. It should alsobe considered for 250W HPS.

The Timed Power Switch features canbe obtained at an additional price ofR 250.00.

Consider the savings on a 400W HPScircuit:

• Every night 6 hours at a reducedpower consumption or 200W,resulting in a reducedconsumption of 6*0.2 kW =1.2kWh.

• At a rate of typically 34c/kWh thisresults in daily savings of R 0.41per lamp.

• This means that after 20 months, the unit has paid for itself.

• Over and above these benefits, thelamp life is extended, since thelamp is “under-run” for 50% of itsoperation time.

We trust that this technology will beembraced by all power consciousclients.

The brochure of the Timed PowerSwitch can be downloaded from:www.beka.co.za

Many architects and lightingdesigners like to apply the un-cluttered lighting effect an in-

ground up-lighter provides. Only such aluminaire, discreetly recessed into theground, would effectively light uparchitectural features, like columns, niches, statues, advertising boards orwall mounted signage. However, untilrecently, customers could only choosebetween high priced European and lowquality Eastern imports.

BEKA listened to the requirements of itscustomers to provide a reliable in-ground up-lighting solution. For thisreason, we designed the first locallymanufactured in-ground up-lighter,namely the BEKASPIKE.

It has been designed to providesolutions to the problems, which havealways plagued this luminaire type, namely:

• To provide a reliable ingressprotection of at least IP 67. Thismeans that the luminaire can besubmersed under water at times, without allowing any ingress ofwater into the luminaire.

• To provide a simple and sturdyluminaire, which can be easilyinstalled, even by lower skilledpersonnel.

These requirements were achieved bythe BEKASPIKE, which boasts:

• A double die-cast aluminiumhousing design, which nests the up-lighter’s lamp housing inside theinstallation housing.

• A reliable triple gasket solution, which prevents the ingress of wateror moisture into the lampcompartment.

• Symmetrical and asymmetrical lightdistributions.

• A range of colours are available byutilising dichroic colour filters.

• A lamp power of up to 70W MetalHalide. This ensures that nooverheating of the luminaire or itscomponents reduces its life time.

To overcome the problem that lowerskilled installers could compromise theintegrity of the luminaire, BEKA offers apre-wired solution. With this version theluminaire is pre-wired and providedwith the cable length required by theclient and already fitted with the light

source. Now, the luminaire only needsto be buried in the ground and to beconnected to mains.

The BEKASPIKE has been well receivedby our clients, who are using in-groundup-lighters more readily.

By offering an alternative to the lowquality of mainly imported bulkheads,BEKA has responded to the needs of itscustomers with this luminaire.

installation. Among the drivers of thisproject were the geographicalchallenges of the installation site, as aresult of the density of dwellings, reticulation challenges of overhead andunderground systems, as well as a lackof vehicular access for maintenancepurposes.

The technology used comprises thefollowing:

- Solar Panel of 85W

- BEKARAY Post Top luminaire withone 11W Compact Fluorescent Lamp(CFL) operated through an inverter, incorporated inside the luminaire.

- A Solar Box, which incorporates thebattery and regulator in a theftresistant housing.

In response to the requirements ofclients to provide flicker-free andinstant-start lighting for industrialand commercial applications, BEKAintroduced the BEKA T-BAYluminaire.

This luminaire utilises the luminousefficiency of T5 lamps, clustersthem into units of four andprovides the environment in whichthe lamps can operate at theirfullest lamp lumen.

The luminaire is available in thelamp version of 4 * FQ 54W and 4* FQ 80W, therefore providing aluminous cluster totalling 17,800,respectively 24,600 lumens.

It is designed to keep the electronicballasts as cool as possible, in orderto prolong their operational life.

The luminaire is also available withdimmable control gear, or anemergency version, which operatesone lamp in a maintained state.

This design has been well received byTown Planners and Architects, whoare looking for solutions which aresufficiently versatile and aestheticallypleasing.

Different shaped stems of differentmounting heights can be attached inclusters of up to four onto the polebase. This leaves the designers withendless variations in order to adaptthe design to the project’s needs.

- Seven meter mounting height steelpole.
