SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JANUARY 15, 2012 VOL. LXIII NO. 9

From the Pastor’s Desk

Each year, during the month of January, our Church joins other Christian denominations in praying that the words of Jesus will come to pass: “…that they all may be one. As you, Father, are in me and I am in you, may they also be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given them, so that they may be one, as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become completely one, so that the world may know that you have sent me and have loved them even aw you have loved me” (John 17).

These are powerful words of prayer from the lips of Jesus. Clearly, Jesus teaches us in this prayer that the credibility of his own mission depends, in part, on the unity that Christians have among themselves. When we are united, and live and act as a united people, the witness we give to Jesus Christ is all the more powerful. That is not something we imagine. It comes from the lips of Jesus himself: “so that the world may believe that you have sent me.”

With the fracturing of the Christian Church throughout the cen-turies, the witness to the living Jesus has been diluted. When we think of the serious issues that divide Christians, the thought of putting it all together again can become overwhelming. Yet, there is hope. There always is hope. On the part of the Catholic faith community, since the Second Vatican Council (1962 – 1965), there has been a renewed emphasis on working to chip away, issue by issue, concern by concern, at those dimensions of belief that separate us. Equally important, there has been great progress especially in the area of official dialogues among the Christian denominations and the Catholic Church that have been ongoing, some for forty years or more. Important strides have been made and common beliefs expressed. Some issues that were symbolic of separation have been resolved. For example, the debate about faith vs. good works in gaining redemption and salvation was resolved several years ago in dialogue with our Lutheran brothers and sisters. Both faith and good works are necessary, each having its own place when it comes to witness-ing to Christ. Other areas of common agreement between the Catholic Church and various Christian denominations center on the Eucharist, priesthood, the sacraments and the role of bishops as shepherds of God’s people. We find hope in these dialogues because it is in dialogue that the Holy Spirit of God is able to act on the human heart and spirit.

The search for unity is definitely advanced by international dialogues. However, it is equally important for that search to take place on the grass roots level. In North Colonie several ministers of Christian parishes meet on a fairly regular basis. It is a gathering for prayer and fellowship. Once each year a common worship service is sponsored. That is always held on the Sunday before Thanksgiving and is hosted in a different church each year. These regular gatherings of the ministers of North Colonie are important because they afford us a time together for prayer, and the discussion of issues that are com-mon to most of us. I look forward to these gatherings and enjoy them.

During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, I invite you to offer the prayer of Christ, each day, for the hastening of that day when all will be one in him. In the spirit of Christ’s words in John’s Gospel, I urge you to pray, each day this week: “Lord, may they be one as you and the Father are one.”

IN MEMORY OF THE CHILDREN

On Tuesday evening, January 24, 2012, a special liturgy will be celebrated to remember children who have died. The Mass is of-fered for parents and others who have suffered the loss of a child through miscarriage, abortion, accident, illness, murder or sui-cide. The loss may be recent or long past, the child, young or older. The liturgy, with special scripture readings of hope and comfort, will be celebrated in the St. Pius X Chapel at 7:00 PM. ************************************************** SPEAK, LORD, WE ARE LISTENING In today’s first reading God keeps calling out in the night to a sleeping boy. Neither the boy, Samuel, nor his teacher, Eli, understands who is calling. But God’s persistence convinces them. Samuel is then ready—not ready yet to do anything, but ready to listen. “Speak, for your servant is listening” (1 Sam-uel 3:10). In the Gospel Jesus is out teaching. Various people notice him and begin to gather around. They soon become disciples and, like the young Samuel, are ready—not ready yet to do any-thing, but ready to listen. “Speak,” they say, “we are listen-ing.” God’s voice is always with us, awake or asleep. It swirls around us like fog on a waterfront, enveloping us, gently urg-ing us to wake up, to listen. Awareness of the voice comes first; then willingness to listen; then, in time, the decision to act, to live according to God’s word. Let’s ask today for the ability to keep our ears open so we don’t miss God’s voice.

****************************************************** VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: Small Altar Linens

The new schedule is being prepared for the coming year. This min-istry is an essential part of preparing for the Celebration of the Eucharist. Those who are involved in this ministry attend to the washing and ironing of the linens which are used at every mass. There is a schedule for teams of two for each weekend. The rotation is usually about once every 3-4 months. The responsibilities of this ministry include picking up the linens after Mass on your scheduled weekend, laundering the linens, ironing them, and then returning them to the sacristy before the next weekend. We are always happy to have anyone join our “iron-women” in this meaningful ministry. If you are looking for a chance to volunteer in a vital, (though not so glamorous), means of serving our church, we invite you to call the Parish Office at 462-1336. Men Welcome! *******************************************************

A Day of Reflection for Divorced or Separated Catholics

The Priory Retreat, 135 Priory Road Chestertown, NY 12817 Saturday, January 28, 2012 10:00 AM

Are you divorced or separated and Catholic? Divorced and sepa-rated Catholics may disconnect from prayer, worship, and participa-tion in the Catholic community. This can occur because of misun-derstanding what it means to be separated or divorced in the eyes of the Church and feeling isolated because of the prejudice of some members of the community. This day of reflection and prayer will answer the question: "Who am I now as a Catholic?" in an affirma-tive and loving way. Facilitators: Deacon Greg and Marianne Zoltowski Donation $75 *******************************************************

Your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you.

PASTORAL CARE

“When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the Lord came and revealed his presence, calling out as before, ‘Samuel, Sam-uel!’ Samuel answered, ‘Speak, for your servant is listening.” + In the gospel narrative John the Baptist encourages two of his disciples in their growing faith. He points Jesus out as the “Lamb of God” the one they are seeking. While they follow Him, Jesus probes them, “What are you looking for?” They have yet to acknowledge what and whom they are seeking. But they know they are longing for more than John can offer. Are you seeking to know God more? Is your heart ready to receive His teachings? In Psalm 40 we are reminded that the Lord wants us to be teachable disciples, too. “Sacrifice or offering you wish not, but ears open to obedience you gave me.” Like Samuel we must open our ears to God’s call and allow Him to reveal His presence to each of us in His way. Listen … and you will hear!

What are you looking for?

Who do you seek? Listen within and respond

Family Perspectives by Bud Ozar: Jesus’ question in today’s gospel is still valid today: “What are you looking for?” What do you want from your spouse, children or parents? Families are populated with imperfect people. To expect perfection is unreal. To expect and accept imperfection is wisdom. ***************************************************

We respectfully remind everyone to observe the No parking areas on the parish grounds. These areas provide for everyone’s safety, and in case of emergency they provide access for emergency vehicles. Also, please park only within the lines designated as park-ing spaces. Areas outside of those lines are for emergency access. Thank you.

Winter’s Night Out On Saturday, February 4, 2012, the St. Pius X School Board will sponsor A Winter’s Night Out in New York City at Wolferts Roost Country Club in Al-bany, New York. This annual event provides an op-portunity for parents, friends, and patrons of St. Pius X School to come together for an evening of enter-tainment while raising money for our parish school. Through silent and live auctions conducted during the evening, this event also serves as the single larg-est fundraising activity for St. Pius X School each year. Look for the invitation in the bulletin the first week of January! We hope to see you on February 4th! If you are interested in becoming a Sponsor for the event or want to donate an item for either the live or

silent auction, please contact Josie Pienkosz at 281-0417 or Sue Wagner at 434-8693 or [email protected]. ***************************************************

Thank You St. Pius X Parish The smiles on the faces of our Haitian orphans speak more than words can to show how much they are enjoying a Christmas that would not have been possible without your assistance.

YOUR SERVANT IS LISTENING In today’s first reading, Samuel hears the Lord’s voice, but mis-takes it for Eli’s. Fortunately, Eli is familiar enough with the ways of the Lord to help Samuel make his response. As we seek the Lord, it is good to have someone like Eli who is familiar with the Lord’s voice. There are many voices that bid us “Follow this way,” and the Lord’s call is not always easy to discern. There are people, too, who would pretend to know the Lord and draw others to themselves rather than to God. Eli could have taken advantage of Samuel’s naïveté and claimed it was he who had summoned Samuel. But Eli claims neither to be God nor to speak for God. Instead, he encourages Samuel to listen for himself. WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR? Perhaps the most profound line in all of today’s readings is Je-sus’ question of the two disciples who begin to follow him. “What are you looking for?” he asks plainly and directly. Finding the Messiah was partly a matter of what one was look-ing for. If one lived with the expectation of the Messiah’s com-ing, there would be a certain alertness, a certain watchfulness to life, and a certain openness to God’s movements. The two disci-ples had followed John the Baptizer, but as soon as John pointed to Jesus, they were ready to follow him. It has been said that what we find in life is pretty much what we have sought. “What are you looking for?” is a challenging ques-tion for each of us to ask of ourselves. Our honest answer to this question can reveal much about our faith and our values. Those who, like Andrew and the other disciple, are looking for the Messiah will find the Messiah, dwelling now, as then, among the people. “Come and see!” ****************************************************
