Commenting on this announcement Laminar’s Sales & Marketing Director Mike Hickey said “This phase of wider product availability will make it easier for customers to specify our products across their regional operations. We understand that customers have to undertake extensive qualification testing before a shipper can be accepted into their supply chain/distribution process. Wider availability of our qualified shippers, has the potential to reduce the burden of procurement from multiple shipper manufacturers, according to what was locally available in each region”. Mr Hickey continues “Unlike many others in the insulated shipper industry, our sales growth across Asia & North America has allowed us to accelerate our programme of investment in regional manufacturing. So Laminar now has full shipper range manufacturing locations covering Europe, North America and the Asian markets. By contrast, many of our competitors continue to offer global supply by bulk shipping stock across the globe into regional holding warehouses”. The investment in US manufacturing will give our North American customers a wider selection of locally supplied shippers. Local manufacture has the potential to provide other benefits, such as reduced delivery charges and shorter supply lead times. Further expansion of regional product availability is planned for 2012 , ensuring Laminar is well placed to exploit the growing demand for our products in the global clinical trials/pharmaceutical products market.

Further expansion of shipper ranges manufactured in North AmericaSix product ranges are now manufactured by Saf-T-Pak, our US business partner giving global customers greater potential to specify our qualified shippers across their North American R&D, manufacturing and distribution operations.

The continued sales growth outside of Europe (our main manufacturing hub) is a real testament to the trusted relationship we have with our customers, endorsing a commitment to good product design and supply chain excellence. As a result, we are pleased to announce a further expansionof manufacturing capabilities in the US.

Commenting on this announcement Laminar’s Sales & Marketing DirectorMike Hickey said “This phase of wider product availability will make it easier for customers to specify our products across their regional operations. Market research has led Laminar to define its future product market strategyIn 2011 we conducted several market research initiatives to help define our future product market strategy. An initial product review consisted of qualitative focus group research into key customer requirements. As a result of this first phase a selection of customer issues were further examined in an online questionnaire targeting the entire customer database to provide quantitative statistics. A big thank you to all those customers that took part in our research initiatives.

The Global Temperature Mapping StudyThe Global Temperature Mapping Study (GTMS) was carried out in association with DHL Supply Chain, and Laminar Medica over a 23 month period from September 2008 to July 2010.

In this excerpt from a recent presentation at theCold Chain Storage & Distribution Europe 2012conference in London, Andrew Green from LaminarMedica outlines the methodology of developingnew temperature profiles for specific shipping lanes.

To ensure the product inside the packaging is stablewe need to know what the outside temperature isduring the shipment transit.

Ambient Temperature Profiling provides the dataneeded to determine which packaging & shippingroute best suit the needs of your product.

Allowing you to:

• Manage risk by understanding the ambient temperature ranges your shipment will encounter during transit and during each season.

• Reduce the number of packaging types needed by using same types in areas with similar ambient temperature ranges.

• Control your packaging cost by effectively selecting the packaging type best suited for your needs.

The goals of the Global Temperature Mapping Study were to:

• Measure ambient temperature profiles from the ACTUAL clinical trials network

• Collect enough data for statistical significance over the seasons (12 months +)

• Include single air & dual airfreight legs

• Identify lanes/areas of extreme ambient temperatures

• Use the data to validate current/develop new packaging testing profiles

• Develop appropriate packaging for the lanes

In this study we used 2 types of Laminar Medica shippers (the CT21 and CT470 (pallet size shipper)). Data collection was carried out by locating externally a Temptale®4 (TT4) electronic data logging device midway at the top of the system, where there was no interference with recording of the ambient air temperature.

Over 300 depot (bulk) shipments were recorded from DHL Banbury (South West England) to destinations including Australia, Singapore, Israel, Russia, Ukraine, France, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and Brazil (Figure 1).

Page 5: Jan 12 Customer newsletter

5

A statistical approach was used throughout the study to derive the average minimum, maximumand mean values prior to applying the standard deviations to generate the confidence interval.

GTMS Highlights

• Over 300 inter-depot CT shipments monitored over 23 months

• Considerable variation in duration, average and peak temperatures

• Only 20 – 30% of transit time in airfreight

• Temperature spikes during loading/unloading

• Consistent temperatures during airfreight (12-19C) and customs (10–21C)

In summary collecting time and temperature data over a 23 month period has helped to develop our temperature profiles for specific global shipping lanes, for the individual stages that makes up each shipment and for both single and dual airfreight legs, as well as reinforcing the credibility of our existing temperature profiles. This information can be used to develop & utilise more appropriate packaging for the shipping lanes and it helps to identify the corrective actions to drive the process improvement. Our data has proved extremely useful in the design of customer specific systems, and for extra qualification, for those customers that have no historical data for their shipping lane. We can’t eliminate the variations in distribution process, however we can minimise the risk by using the information gained in the study to factor these differences into our shipper design and our customers’ logistics planning.

If you would like to know more information concerning the GTMS please contact Andrew Greenvia email: [email protected]

During January key staff from our global partners visited Laminar’s UK headquarters for the Business Partner Summit 2012. The representatives included Ronald Toh and Henri Lee from Aeris Dynamics (Singapore), and Bob Chaisson and David Hebrank from Saf-T-Pak (North America).

During the week they had a tour of the manufacturing plant and had various meetings to review sales, marketing, technical and manufacturing activity with the management team. They also spent two days visiting our Czech manufacturing plant to meet the Czech team and have a tour of the facility.

The feedback we received was that the partners were very impressed with the staff and facilities at both plants, and found the visit to be interesting, informative and enjoyable.

Reducing customer’s operational costsOur market research has clearly identified that in these times of austerity customers are intensely focused on cost saving initiatives. Logistics and operations costs are high up the agenda for our customers. Priority areas for reducing operational costs appear to be: outbound shipping costs, packaging costs, assembly and pack-out costs and warehouse and storage costs.

In 2011 our Global Product Strategy was rolled out with the implementation of over 15 modular and sizeable units that can be assembled or configured for different shipping durations, climate zones and temperature stability requirements. This new generation of adaptable systems have been designed to offer effective protection using the minimum number of proven Laminar Medica components.

The benefits to our customers include: • Reduced assembly costs using the same core system componentry for several temperature bands • Reduced componentry and warehouse costs • Reduced lead times on certain products • Simplified ordering

With increasing pressure on companies to cut their expenditure, the need to find a cost effective method of protecting temperature sensitive goods is now essential. By making the most of our modular solutions and common componentry, customers can gain access to a new generation of sophisticated, yet affordable, temperature controlled packaging technology to ensure that sensitive materials are shipped quickly, efficiently and cost effectively.
