A reading from the Second letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Corinthians (10: 1-11)Your blessings Father

Brothers and sisters,I myself, Paul, appeal to you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ — I who amhumble when face to face with you, but bold toward you when I am away! — I ask thatwhen I am present I need not show boldness by daring to oppose those who think we areacting according to human standards. Indeed, we live as human beings, but we do notwage war according to human standards; for the weapons of our warfare are not merelyhuman, but they have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments andevery proud obstacle raised up against the knowledge of God, and we take every thoughtcaptive to obey Christ. We are ready to punish every disobedience when your obedience iscomplete. Look at what is before your eyes. If you are confident that you belong to Christ, remind yourself of this, that just as you belong to Christ, so also do we. Now, even if Iboast a little too much of our authority, which the Lord gave for building you up and not fortearing you down, I will not be ashamed of it. I do not want to seem as though I am tryingto frighten you with my letters. For they say, “His letters are weighty and strong, but hisbodily presence is weak, and his speech contemptible.” Let such people understand thatwhat we say by letter when absent, we will also do when present. Praise be to God always.

Gospel (John 1: 29-34)

The Apostles said: The next day he sawJesus coming toward him and declared,“Here is the Lamb of God who takesaway the sin of the world! This is he ofwhom I said, ‘After me comes a manwho ranks ahead of me because he wasbefore me.’ I myself did not know him;but I came baptizing with water for thisreason, that he might be revealed toIsrael.” And John testified, “I saw theSpirit descending from heaven like adove, and it remained on him. I myselfdid not know him, but the one who sentme to baptize with water said to me, ‘Heon whom you see the Spirit descend andremain is the one who baptizes with theHoly Spirit.’ And I myself have seen andhave testified that this is the Son ofGod.” This is the truth. Peace be with you.

POPE FRANCIS. GENERAL AUDIENCESaint Peter's SquareWednesday, 8 January 2014

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Today we begin a series ofcatecheses on the sacraments, starting with baptism. TheSecond Vatican Council tells us that the Church herself is a“sacrament”, a grace-filled sign which makes Christ’s savingwork present in history, through the power of the Holy Spirit. The first of the Church’s seven sacraments, baptism givesus new birth in Christ, makes us sharers in the mystery ofhis death and resurrection, grants the forgiveness of sin andbrings us new freedom as God’s children and members ofhis Church. Let us not forget the great gift we have received. Our baptism has changed us, given us a new and glorioushope, and empowered us to bring God’s redeeming love toall, particularly the poor, in whom we see the face of Christ. Our baptism has also given us a share in the Church’smission of evangelization; as disciples, we are alsomissionaries. As we celebrate the feast of the Baptism ofthe Lord this Sunday, let us ask him to renew in us the graceof our baptism and to make us, with all our brothers andsisters, true children of God and living members of his body, the Church.
