He sailed from Greenock on the 'Potentate' with the desire of going to Sydney. He had to deliver a letter to a family friend in Port Phillip, Victoria. He liked Port Phillip so much he decided to stay. He initially was employed at a station in Mordialloc. When his brother arrived in 1841 they ventured west and held land in the Western District (see Robert b. 4/8/1812). In 1846 he was speared in the head by an aboriginal - saved by his straw hat! Apparently he enjoyed traveling and sailing more than working. Sailed: Aust to NZ 1856; NZ to Aust 1857; Aust to UK 1858; UK to Aust 1861; Aust to UK 1862; UK to Aust 1865; Aust to NZ 1867; Aust to UK 1867; UK to Aust 1870; Aust to UK 1871. Photo on right. Unsure if he married / had children. Living at Hundelshope farm when baptised (see baptism records). Mary Jamieson neeWallace born 1788 - mother of the Jamieson 12, married at 16 and widowed at aged 40 - adored by the family and many grandchildren named after her. Below: Extract from Map showing the Pastoral Holdings of the Port Phillip District 1835 - 1851. Compiled by A.S. Kenyon - Historical Society of Victoria. Pioneer brothers Robert (b 1812) & William Jamieson (b 1814) were briefly involved in a partnership with Mr Carmichael of The Union. After this p'ship dissolved the brothers pushed further west and settled near Portland Bay and called their property Castlemaddie after the family farm in Scotland. They sold C'maddie in 1848/49 and a built flour mill on the Barwon River at Fyansford in 6/1849 (called the Wandel Mill after their Uncles farm in Scotland). Sold the mill in 1851 & purchased the farm Eumeralla West nr Macarthur. Sold Eumeralla West in 1858 bought Bolac Plains in 1859 & Stony Point in 1881. Mary JAMIESONb. 6/11/1816 at 'Castlemaddie', in the Parish of Carsphairn, Scotland d. 13/7/1823 aged 8. Mary FREDERICK b. 25/2/1852 at Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland d 22/3/1918. Did not marry. She left some money to Robert, Flo & William Jamieson in Australia. The majority of her estate was left to her cousin Jane McClymont Campbell. She had no children / no issue. Castlemaddie Farm house, Carsphairn. House where most of the Jamieson 12 were born (The Pioneers birth place). Isabella FREDERICKb. 2/2/1854 at Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland. Died single in 1870 at 'Clendrie' aged 16 of Phlebitis (inflammation of veins). She was sick for 18 months. See copy of death certificate. No issue. Elizabeth JAMIESONb.26 or 27/3/1819 at 'Castlemaddie' in the Parish of Carsphairn. m. 25/10/1850 Andrew Frederickat Stoneykirk, Wigtown (farmer at Freugh near Stranraer, and who later had 'Clendrie' near Castle Kennedy) apparently had 3 or 4 daughters & 1 son, all died young except Mary (3 died of consumption). Elizabeth corresponded fairly regularly through most of the period with the brothers in Australia – particularly with Robert who would appear to have been her favourite brother. Her letters give the impression of a lively active woman, interested in all things pertaining to family connections. One wonders whether Elizabeth did any match-making, for it appears most likely that Robert Jamieson first met Joanna Black when he visited Elizabeth, who lived near Stranraer in 1854-55. See Tapestry / Sampler done by Jessie Frederick (Andrews sister?) at their farm Clendrie in 1867. Elizabeth Jamieson FREDERICKb. 12/3/1856 at Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland. Apparently had several children but few records have been found of them. He held the farm of Auchenroy, also one in the Highlands at Moidart and later one at “Churchie Hill” near Newton Stewart. Their daughter Mary married her 1st cousin Thomas R Haddow. Mary JAMIESON b. 1856 d. 29/3/1926 aged 69. She married her 1st cousin Thomas Robert HADDOWon 15/7/1884 (b.1850 d. 24/5/1915 aged 65, Merkland, Penport). Was a person OF, IN or AT a place? Until the beginning of the 19th century, Scottish farms were usually let under the Multiple Tenancy system, so several names may be associated with a property at any given time. If a person was "of" they were the landowner, "in" denotes a tenant farmer and "at" or no preposition usually indicates a cottar or farm labourer. This was a closely followed social distinction. From Debra Vaughan, South Gippsland Genealogical Society Aug 2006. Spelling of the name Jamieson: Jamieson is a good low-land Scottish name. In records from 1600's till mid 1700's the spelling of the name Jamieson varied greatly in our family, even within the same generation. The Baptism records of the Jamieson 6 & 9 show the name spelt Jemison, Jameson, Jamison & Jamieson. This was most probably because the clergy writing in the church register spelt names anyway they wished as spelling apparently was not taken seriously until later in the 1700's. Apparently back then a person often spelt their name / surname differently throughout their life. In our family, in the 1800's it appears to have become accepted practice to spell the surname more consistently as Jamieson. In other Scottish records the surname has been spelt Jamyson, Jenison, Jamesson & Jamesen. John JAMIESONb. 4/4/1858 in Straiton, Ayreshire, Scotland d 15/8/1935 aged 77 at Romsey, Victoria (nr Kilmore), grazier. Her father was James Geddes, farmer from Woorndoo and her mother Anne McGuinness). James Geddes may have worked at Bolac Plains. There were payments of wages to a cousin John at BP btw 1/1/1891 - July 1892. A letter was received by Robert J (b 1863 - Paps father) from John on 12/6/1926. At this time John was at 'Glenbrae', via Wallan, nr Kilmore. Photo above. John Geddes JAMIESON(called Jock) born 8/9/1915 at Tarraville, Gippsland (nr Yarram), Australia d. 29/6/2004 in a Nursing home in Sunbury, Melbourne. Buried in Sunbury. He did not marry or have children but his beneficiary was Allan Tomlinson (probably a Geddes cousin). According to a relative near Lake Bolac, John had a very strict upbringing, led a quiet life and enjoyed cricket and train spotting! He sold the farm Glenbrae in the 70's (bought by John Williams). He then travelled the world. For some reason he never made contact with any of the Jamieson's from Stony Point or Bolac Plains. Archibald JAMIESONb 3/11/1823 at 'Castlemaddie' in the Parish of Carsphairn d. 7/5/1846 aged 22. He acted as a shepherd for Richard at the Holm farm. His letters are in the juvenile style of a simple serious lad, and indicated that at one time he had thoughts of joining his brothers in Australia. Apparently he was not very strong and died while out with sheep. The account of his sudden death is given in detail in two letters B7 and 8. When his brother arrived in 1841 they ventured west and held land in the Western District (see Robert b. 4/8/1812). In 1846 he was speared in the head by an aboriginal - saved by his straw hat! Mary Jamieson nee Wallace born 1788 - mother of the Jamieson 12, married at 16 and widowed at aged 40 - adored by the family

and many grandchildren named after her.

After this p'ship dissolved the brothers pushed further west and settled near Portland Bay and called their

property Castlemaddie after the family farm in Scotland.

Elizabeth JAMIESON b.26 or 27/3/1819 at 'Castlemaddie' in the Parish of Carsphairn. m. 25/10/1850 Andrew Frederick at Stoneykirk, Wigtown (farmer at Freugh near Stranraer, and who later had 'Clendrie' near Castle Kennedy) apparently had 3 or 4 daughters & 1 son, all died young except Mary (3 died of consumption).

Elizabeth Jamieson FREDERICK b. 12/3/1856 at Stoneykirk, Wigtown, Scotland. Died in the 1872, aged 16 of TB pneumonia. Died single, no issue.

She married her 1st cousin Thomas Robert HADDOW on 15/7/1884 (b.1850 d. 24/5/1915 aged 65, Merkland, Penport).

Was a person OF, IN or AT a place? Until the beginning of the 19th century, Scottish farms were usually let under the Multiple Tenancy system, so

several names may be associated with a property at any given time. If a person was "of" they were the

landowner, "in" denotes a tenant farmer and "at" or no preposition usually indicates a cottar or farm

labourer. This was a closely followed social distinction. From Debra Vaughan, South Gippsland

Genealogical Society Aug 2006.

Spelling of the name Jamieson: Jamieson is a good low-land Scottish name. In records from 1600's till mid 1700's the spelling of the name

Jamieson varied greatly in our family, even within the same generation. The Baptism records of the Jamieson 6 & 9 show the name spelt

Jemison, Jameson, Jamison & Jamieson. This was most probably because the clergy writing in the church register spelt names anyway

they wished as spelling apparently was not taken seriously until later in the 1700's. Apparently back then a person often spelt their name /

surname differently throughout their life. In our family, in the 1800's it appears to have become accepted practice to spell the surname more consistently as Jamieson. In other Scottish records the surname has

been spelt Jamyson, Jenison, Jamesson & Jamesen.

John JAMIESON b. 4/4/1858 in Straiton, Ayreshire, Scotland d 15/8/1935 aged 77 at Romsey, Victoria (nr Kilmore), grazier. Buried Darraweit Guim Cemetery, Pryb section. 1st wife died in 1884 or 1904 in Scotland. 2nd m. 19th June 1914 (aged 56) in Melb to Barbara Flora Geddes aged 35 (b. 1879 at Woorndoo.

John Geddes JAMIESON (called Jock) born 8/9/1915 at Tarraville, Gippsland (nr Yarram), Australia d.

Archibald JAMIESON b 3/11/1823 at 'Castlemaddie' in the Parish of Carsphairn d.
