Application Icon Photography

Through my application icon ideas, i managed to narrow down the look of the icon to a creative shot of someone doing a dance pose. In the photographs above are some creative shots taken in my house with the light turned off, using my uncles studio lights, with a Canon eos 5d with a 24-105mm L lens, a perfect wide angle lens on a fast shutter speed to darken out the background as much as possible to then be photoshopped later on.

The first couple of shots i asked my younger sister Kayla to show some of the hand gestures in her poses (mainly capturing the upper body) , which did work quite well got some really nice shots. We then tried some full body poses which was what i originally came up with through the idea generation which worked out

perfectly, everything was in focus and when i grabbed the view finder i was able to see the photographs potential on the application’s icon.

I also tried some fast motion shots of her dancing and jumping but not all the shots were in focus or she wouldn’t be smiling in the shot which is really important as when your being judged as a dancer they always look out for dancers that keep a nice constant smile throught their routine.

The Bottom right photograph, i used to show how each image is going to be edited before being used on the app.

(All the photographs will be on USB in the portfolio)

These are some concepts for the applications icon, using the photography taken over the weekend of my sister doing the bollywood poses. When taking the picture i really had to picture how it would fit on the application icon and how i would creatively crop the images. There are still alot of images to be edited, i wanted to try photoshoping the images so that the background is black so the main concentration is on the dancer and the logo.

iDance is just a temporary name until i can come up with a permanant name over January, but the icon is definately going to be photographic. I am pleased with the photographs that have been taken and i plan to do some more when we come back for the second part of the year.

iDance User Interface ConceptsThe user interface is quite a tough task as we dont know who is going be using the application. The younger generation in general tend to pick up any of the touch devices below and are able to fully use and understand how the applications work quite quickly. Where as the older generation might get fed up with the application as there is too much information (buttons or methods of activating the buttons) on screen. The navigation needs to be simple and legible.

As i wanted the application to be available on both devices if possible, i would have to work out how to use the rest of the screen real estate on the ipad creatively or if should just have it on the ipad alone.

What the Iphone App is going to doThe application i am creating is designed to teach people of any age how to do bollywood dancing. The application would have step by step tutorials on each part of a song. There will be ways to stop and start a routine.

I will also make quotes and photographs of the different movements in the song including close up shots of hand gestures, feet and eyes gestures.

I would like to include if possible a place where customers can review the dance and the performance of the app as a whole, a good example would be to look at the twitter application.

On the extras button i would like that to maybe link onto a trailer for a new dance

routine coming soon and a chance for people to vote for a new song to dance too.

The settings button would cover the sound, credits and push notifications.

Iphone Application tools

Apple provide the best application creation software available for everyone to download and use, Xcode is what developers use to code and debug their applications, Interface builder pretty much does what is says on the box, allows you to control and manage the user interface. Instruments is new to the developers applications it allows you to choose templates for your application.Although i purchased the apple developer application, most of the designs are going to be created using Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop CS5 which will then be brought into the apple developer programs to be coded and tested.

The coding i shall be learning in the next couple of months is Objective-C its a well known language among apple application developers, i have a couple of books on Objective-C and as im going to India in December, i shall use this oppurtunity to find more books and dvd’s on coding as i want to learn it as quickly as possible so that all i would need to concentrate on is the design side of things.

For my final major project I am going to create a fully functioning apple application for the iPad, which will teach people of all ages how to do Bollywood dancing. I have researched all of the books and websites that are going to help me code and place my application on the Apple App Store. I will take the photography and filming, and I shall be doing all the video editing. The end presentation either be on an Apple iPad, or a high definition video of the application fully functioning on the iPad (like the apple adverts)

I shall be using the following software to design and code my application :- Adobe Illustrator CS5- Adobe Photoshop CS5- Xcode- Interface Builder- Instruments- Simulator- Adobe After Effects CS5

Websites and books that I shall be looking at include :- www.developer.apple.com- http://cocoadevcentral.com/d/learn_objectivec- Programming in Objective-C 2.0 second edition by Stephen G. Kochan- Computer Arts presents IPad: the creative pro’s guide- Programming in Objective-C 2.0 by Stephen G. Kochan DVD

The first part of this course has been pretty challenging, I have been taken out of my comfort zone on many occasions which has helped me decide what I want to do for my Final Major Project. It gave me a chance to better my knowledge on software I’ve never used before and learn some new and interesting methods on getting good outcomes. I’m getting used to presenting to the class as before I was nervous. I made good use of the blog and found it very helpful in terms of presenting as it saves a lot of money and digital looks better.

Software I’ve learnt and books read :- Computer Arts presents IPad: the creative pro’s guide- Adobe After Effects CS5- Adobe Soundbooth CS5- Adobe Premiere Pro CS4- Icons – Web Design : Flash sites- Icons – Web Design : Portfolios- Icons – Web Design : Interactive- Icons – Web Design : Music sites- Icons – Web Design : Studios- (Blog) Digital Experience Design : Ideas, Industries, Interaction (Currently reading)
