James Fullarton studied at the the Glasgow School of Art under Donaldson,Goudie and Shanks. Since gaining his Diploma in Drawing and Painting in 1969,he has worked full-time as a professional artist based in Ayrshire. He is aregular exhibitor with the Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts and has exhibitedwith the Royal Scottish Academy and lectured for the Scottish Arts Council. Hehas also won several prizes throughout his career including the David CargillAward and the Britoil Award.

Today, James is regarded as one of Scotland's leading contemporary painters, uncompromising in hisstandard of work and always individual in both thought and practice. He is famed for his powerful styleof skilled fluid brushwork, strong colour and broad palette. Working in both oil and acrylic, his subjectmatter is varied and includes still-life, and his much renowned en-plein air landscape and harbourpaintings. James is also a skilled portrait painter with sitters including the late James Hunter-Blair.

Vibrant colour, bold compositions and expressive handling of thick impasto paint are typical features ofthis prolific artist. Working directly from the subject matter, James draws inspiration from the ever-changing light and its effects on everyday objects, allowing him to develop his ideas quickly on canvas.With prominant large brushtrokes and a brilliant eye for colour he could quite easily be desribed as amodern day Colourist. Works can vary from small studies, rapidly executed in a spontaneous manner, tovery large landscape paintings or dramatic still lifes.

James has enjoyed a long and successful career with many solo shows. His work is sold in a number ofgalleries across Scotland and England and has been acquired for many public and corporate collectionsincluding;
