The Definitive Book on the Very FirstCommemorative Set of the 20th Century!

The Trans-Mississipi Issue of 1898By Randy L. Neil, The Original Hardbound edition in brand new pristine condition—from the last batch of the original hardbound edition from 1997. 168 pp. Color Plate Section. Bound in maroon cloth with gold imprinted titling.

Published to honor the 100th Anniversary of this first U.S. commemo-rative set of stamps of the 20th century, we are privileged to have

acquired the last publisher’s holding of this this definitive study of the Trans-Mississippi Issue. At the core of this study by Randy Neil are images the vast holdings of every conceivable form of philatelic item in the monumental Trans-Mississippi collection of the late Jack Rosenthal, former chairman of the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee and Trustee of The Philatelic Foundation. Many of these appear in the book’s 8-page color plate section in addition to scores of photographs throughout the book. From the handpainted essays to the most unusual of postal uses, the book examines every aspect of the issue.

The book is the result of six years of study—including the gathering of raw data from ther Bureau of Engraving & Printing archives, the National Postal Museum Library, and the large original files of Mr. Rosenthal. Included is the history of the planning for the Trans-Mississippi and International Exposition in Omaha, Nebraska, how the organizing committee gained the honor of a full set of stamps issued at their event, and great details on the design, develop-ment and production of each of the nine stamps in the set.

Chicago “Blues” from the Large Bank Note PeriodIntroductionFor the past several months I have been working on my collection of material related the Battle of Port Royal Sound. Last week it was time to return it to the safe deposit box for the summer. As I was about to slip it into the box I noticed a packet of Chicago covers that had been hidden in there for years. Looking at these covers over the past few days brought me considerable enjoyment. The covers range from 1847’s used from Chicago to some incredible Chicago “Blues”. My interest in Chicago after 1865 has waned so the “Blues” are starting to be offered here. Enjoy!
