JUNE 2008

ANZAC DAY 2008 The ANZAC Day Dawn Service and Mid-morning Service in Palmerston was well attended. It seems to attract more people each year. Brigadier Krause, Commander 1 Brigade, summed it up. He said in his speech that to get up early, attend the service and pay our respects was a little sacrifice from us in recognition of the huge sacrifices made by those who served and continue to serve our country. ANZAC Day always reinforces for me just how lucky we are to live in Australia. So

many places around the world do not enjoy the comforts, peace and security we have. Whilst those currently serving overseas, my thoughts and best wishes also go out to those in our community personally affected by the disasters in Burma and China. Lest we forget.

I had great pleasure hosting the Gray Primary School Student Representatives Council on 13 March.

We spoke about many issues but particularly about fund raising for the school. The SRC decided it’s first task was set itself priorities and then work on how to reach them.

Good Luck Gray SRC!

Gray Primary school was another local school that held a special ANZAC Day Ceremony at its assembly the week of ANZAC Day.

The students made wreaths and set up a Cenotaph in front of the stage.

Lieutenant Michael Henderson spoke to the students about the significance of ANZAC Day. The students were extremely respectful listening to Lieutenant Henderson and their observance of the ANZAC tradition.

On the 28 March I attended the Year 10s Charter Signing Ceremony.

Year 10 students commit to remaining in school, vocational training or employment for the next 2 years.

A lot has been happening at Palmerston High.

The school held a great ANZAC Day Assembly. Ex-student, Corporal Cindy Bowden gave the address.

The ANZAC assembly is now a regular part of the school’s calendar. The cadets made up the catafalque party.

Yr 10 Students all signed the Future Charter

On 2 April I attended the official launch of the YMCA’s Indigenous Youth Counselling Service.

The Northern Territory Government provided the necessary funding after the previous federal government withdrew its support.

The counselling service is providing support to young people whom need a bit of help and encouragement especially those who don’t receive it at home.

Students singing at the Harmony Day Concert

The YMCA Youth Centre held a disco on Friday 4 April. About 112 young people attended.

I am told everyone had a great night. It was a privilege to support this event by supplying some pizzas.

The YMCA does great work with Palmerston Youth.

Minister’s Scrymgour, Chris Natt, John McLean, Chris Lovatt , David Pierra, Gavin McLean, and James.

Bakewell Primary Walk Safety to School Day

I attended the Walk Safely to school morning on 2 May and then joined students for a healthy breakfast put on by the school. I then joined the Bakewell students and Hector the Cat in walking around the school. Hector made sure we used the crossing.

Palmerston Christian School invited me to attend their special Harmony Day Assembly.

Many classes made posters reflecting what Harmony Day meant to them. These were put up at assembly.
