Principal in Charge Healthy Building Consultant

Oversaw the design and construction teams to help implement an aggressive healthy building/LEED and sustainability program for a new cancer center in northern Minnesota. SMDC is the first health care organization in Minnesota — and among the first 10 in the United States — to certify their 250,000 square foot clinic using the LEED Green Building Rating System, a nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction, and operation of high performance, healthy buildings. Our holistic approach to healthy building design included a view that healthy IEQ = healthy patients. To that end, the design construction process included avoiding the use of PVC, no/low-VOC and no-formaldehyde materials and finishes, high-efficiency air filtration, and superior daylighting and views for patients and staff.

Accelerating Campus Climate Initiatives

USA

Principal in Charge Team Member / Investigator Working with the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), RMI built on foundational research published by various sustainability professionals at universities and the National Wildlife Federation’s growing Low-Carbon Campus Series. Visits to 12 campuses, of varying sizes and types, revealed stories about barriers and solutions to inform our research. A 3-day workshop with participants from each of the campuses visited, informed findings, which were published as a web-based framework for whole-system climate action in campus operations.

“We cannot rest on our past accomplishments to realize the change we need to have.

I believe many people around the world are working together, using old and new collaborative behaviors, to help us transcend the climate and energy challenges we are facing”
