Oregon Children’s Theatre JAMES AND THE GIANT PEACH P3

I am so excited that you are seeing James and The Giant Peach. I love this show! It’s got a great cast, beautiful music, and a story that has fascinated

generations of children. That is the heart of Oregon Children’s Theatre: stories. Next season promises stories that will delight, amaze, inspire, and entertain you and your family.

Goosebumps: Phantom of the Auditorium is a slightly spooky musical that will be a perfect fall treat. We are so excited to present our first-ever mystery! Who is the strange new student auditioning for the school play? Is the school haunted? Is the play cursed? All will be revealed in this world premiere musical.

Fly Guy: The Musical is a wacky story—and another world premiere musical. How many boys can say they’ve got a fly for a pet? A fly who also knows how to say the

A MESSAGE FROM OREGON CHILDREN’S THEATRE

boy’s name...“Buzzzz!” “And how many would enter their fly in a talent contest?! You won’t want to miss the crazy hijinks that ensue.

Flora & Ulysses is a Newbery Award winning book by Kate DiCamillo (the author of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane!). The story is so quirky and funny that I laughed out loud when I read it. Let’s just do a quick rundown of the plot: a squirrel (Ulysses) gets sucked up by a super suction vacuum cleaner. He’s saved by a girl named Flora and realizes he has been transformed into a super squirrel who can both fly and write poetry. The story is at once ridiculous, magical, and heartwarming. It’s also another world premiere. (If you’re counting, that’s THREE world premieres next season!)

I have wanted to present Tomás and the Library Lady for years and it finally fits perfectly in a season. Tomás Rivera and his family are migrant workers. They spend long days in the fields harvesting

crops. It is hard work. But one day Tomás discovers the library and a whole new world of possibilities. Based on an inspiring true story, the play illustrates the power of positive encouragement and how believing in someone can motivate them to do exceptional things.

Pinkalicious is back and quite frankly this is not just a musical, it is an EVENT. Because our audience tends to dress thematically, the moment you enter the theater you will be engulfed in a joyous swirl of all things pink. The joy continues on stage in this fast-paced, totally silly musical.

We are so grateful that you have joined us today. Please join us next season, it will be amazing.

CASTVICTORIA BLAKE(Sponge)Victoria was last seen at OCT as Edith and the Old Sheep in Charlotte’s Web. She’s also appeared locally

in The Cherry Orchard and All My Sons (Artists’ Rep), and has a Best Supporting Actress Drammy for her role in To Kill a Mockingbird (Public Playhouse). Victoria has a BA in Drama from SDSU and is a Navy Veteran.

MATTHEW BROWN(Grasshopper)Matthew recently performed in his very first children’s theater show as Lord Farquaad in Shrek

(NWCT). Some of his other favorite roles include Marvin in Falsettos, Brad in The Rocky Horror Show (both with Live On Stage), and Sparky in Plaid Tidings (Broadway Rose). In addition to performing, Matthew enjoys petting every dog he meets, watching Star Wars over and over again, and singing along to 80s hair metal. Enjoy the show!

THEO CURL(James)Theo’s greatest passions in life all involve music. Whether he’s composing his own songs or singing

and dancing along to someone else’s, Theo has had a song in his heart from the very beginning. And when he grows up? Theo plans to do it all: ballet dancer, composer, actor, conductor, director - there’s nothing he’s ruling out. A third grader at Ridgewood Elementary School, Theo wants to thank Stan for believing in him, and his mom and dad for driving him places.

JAMES DIXON(Earthworm)James feels so honored to be joining such a talented cast and crew for his debut performance at OCT with

such a fun, beautiful story! Favorite past credits include Parade (Staged! Theater), Aladdin and the Magic Lamp (Broadway Rose), and Show Boat (Portland Opera). This is going to be such a blast with one of his personal childhood favorites!

STEPHANIE LEPPERT(Spiker)Stephanie is thrilled to be making her OCT debut with such a phenomenal group of artists! You may have

seen Stephanie perform at other theaters around Portland such as Bag&Baggage (Lear, Julius Caesar), Broadway Rose (Taffeta Christmas), and Lakewood (South Pacific, White Christmas). In addition to being an actor, Stephanie is a licensed massage therapist in SE Portland with Lula Health Center. In her free time, Stephanie enjoys reading, hiking, traveling, watching movies, eating good food, and going to Disneyland.

GERRIN DELANE MITCHELL(Ladahlord)Gerrin is ecstatic to make his debut with OCT! Some of his favorite

roles include Cheshire Cat in Alice in Wonderland (NWCT), MC in Dreamgirls (Portland Center Stage), and Show Boat (Lakewood Theatre). This performance is dedicated to his nieces and nephews whom he loves very deeply, but sees very rarely.

GARY NORMAN(Centipede)Gary is delighted to be working at OCT again after having recently been seen as Professor

Astrofur in Geronimo Stilton: Mouse in Space! His work extends from the stage to television; he has appeared on Grimm, Leverage and The Librarians. In addition to being an actor, he is also an avid photographer and a dog lover. He is the proud poppa to Lady M, Elsinore and Lou, his 3 adorable pooches.

ALLISON PARKER(Roustabout)Allison is in seventh grade, and loves animals and getting lost in nature. She plays the violin and

enjoys horseback riding, acting, singing, traveling, reading, painting, writing stories, making movies on her mom’s iPad, yoga, chocolate, and Benedict Cumberbatch. She aspires to someday travel the world in order to help poor

people and endangered animals. She is grateful to Stan Foote for having faith in her and giving her this wonderful experience—it’s a dream come true for her to be a part of this production, surrounded by such amazing, supportive, and creative people.

CLAIRE RIGSBY(Spider)Claire is thrilled to be making her OCT debut as Spider in James and the Giant Peach! A native

of Atlanta, Claire has been living in Portland for two and a half years and loves it! Some past favorite roles include Rizzo in Grease (Broadway Rose), and Magenta in The Rocky Horror Show (Live On Stage!). Thanks to this wonderful cast, crew, and her friends and family for all their support.

AIDA VALENTINE (James)Aida is thrilled to be in her first production at OCT playing a character from one of her favorite books!

She has enjoyed working with many theater companies around Portland including NWCT, Broadway Rose, Lakewood, Stumptown, and Portland Opera. Though her first love is musical theater, she just finished filming her first movie where she plays the title character, Zoe, in Zilla and Zoe. She thanks Stan for the opportunity and her family and friends for their amazing support. “I dedicate this performance to Mr. Cooke.”

DANIELLE VALENTINE (Ladybug)Danielle is pumped to be in her second production with OCT! Even more exciting is the opportunity

to perform alongside her daughter, Aida. Danielle has enjoyed working with various theater companies around town including Lakewood, Stumptown Stages, Hillsboro Actors Rep, and others. She feels privileged to be able to work with Stan and Jeffrey and an amazing cast to bring such a beloved story to life. Love to Jared, Elijah, Marmie, My Pa, Nani, and Fa.

XAVIER WARNER (Roustabout)Xavier, age 15, attends Jesuit High and is dance captain for the cast. Xavier is a “triple threat,” with

experience in singing, dancing, and acting. He has taken dance since he was three years old and has performed in OBT’s The Nutcracker for five years at the Keller auditorium. Recently Xavier has been in many shows with great roles. His latest was Carlos in Legally Blonde the Musical (Jesuit High School). Xavier is also part of the Young Professionals Company with OCT and the teen council with Portland Center Stage. You may have seen Xavier as Little Mac in OCT’s The Magic Tree House: A Night in New Orleans. His dream is to hit Broadway and share his talent with others. Many thanks to his family and friends for being there for him, for helping him develop his talent, and for supporting his dreams.

STAN FOOTE (Director/OCT Artistic Director) Stan has worked for OCT for 20 years and has been the Artistic Director

since the 2001-2002 season. Stan is a Drammy and PAMTA award-winning director. His production of Kiss of the Spider Woman, originally produced by Miracle Theatre and remounted for Borderlands Theater in Tucson, was named the Outstanding Drama of the 2002–2003 Tucson season. Stan has served on the Board of Directors for Theatre for Young Audiences/USA. His passion for creating new works has led to directing staged readings at the Kennedy Center’s New Visions/New Voices Festival and NYU’s New Plays for Young Audiences. He had the privilege of working with two Newbery Award-winning authors—Lois Lowry and Louis Sachar—to adapt their novels for OCT’s stages. In addition, Stan’s direction and guidance was instrumental in bringing Eric Coble’s adaptation of Lois Lowry’s The Giver to audiences in Portland and around the country. Stan loves teaching and mentoring young people in our community. He is grateful to work with a brilliant staff, an amazing board, and the incredible theater artists in Portland, Oregon.

JEFFREY CHILDS(Musical Director)Jeffrey has worked for Broadway Rose, Portland Center Stage, Staged, and is an instructor for OCT’s Acting Academy. He received the PAMTA and Drammy awards for his musical direction of The World Goes Round at Broadway Rose. Some past shows he’s music directed f or OCT are A Year With Frog and Toad and Skippyjon Jones. Special thanks to Saint Dani.

MARK HAACK(Scenic Designer)James and the Giant Peach is Mark’s eighth show with OCT. He won a Drammy Award for his design of Lois Lowry’s The Giver (OCT). His other OCT designs were Skippyjon Jones, Charlotte’s Web, Gathering Blue, Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse, Gossamer, and Einstein is a Dummy. His work can also be seen at Miracle Theatre.

DANIEL MEEKER(Lighting Designer)Previous designs for OCT include: scenery for Ramona Quimby, Fancy Nancy, and The Stinky Cheese Man. Locally he has designed shows for Portland Center Stage, Portland Playhouse, Artists Rep, COHO, and Profile Theater among others. Daniel is a member of the faculty of Portland State University; he is a graduate of Ithaca College and the Yale School of Drama, and a member of United Scenic Artists.

JASON BRAY(Costume Designer)Jason began his studies and costume career at University of Hawaii Manoa and has a Bachelor’s in Apparel Design from The Art Institute of Portland. He has worked as a First Hand and Assistant Costume Designer for Portland Opera and has returned to work for local theatrical designer Michael Curry making costume and puppetry for clients such as Disney/Dreamworks, Cirque du Soleil, Broadway, Universal Studios, The Olympics, Steve Wynn, Michael Jackson, and Blue Man Group. Jason made his independent design debut in 2008 designing and creating puppets for Boxcar Children’s Theatre in San Francisco (Where the Sidewalk Ends), and locally in 2012 designing

Her favorite thing about theater is moments of small magic; her favorite thing about OCT is all the dinosaurs in the office.

STEPHEN KRIZ GARDNER(Stage Manager)Stephen is psyched to be back at OCT on the mainstage. Most recently with OCT, Stephen has stage managed columbinus with the YP Program and Pedro’s Path to Power. When not behind the scenes, Stephen enjoys hiking, bicycling, geeking out around dogs, and eating lots and lots of food. Stephen likes food.

Ross also served as the first Executive Director of the Oregon Cultural Trust, guiding that organization through its inaugural year in 2002. He is thrilled to be working with a team of fun, creative people to carry out OCT’s mission of transforming lives through exceptional theater experiences.

P16 Oregon Children’s Theatre

Founded in 1988, Oregon Children’s Theatre (OCT) is Oregon’s largest nonprofit professional children’s theater company. OCT’s mission is to create exceptional theater experiences that transform lives.

OCT annually reaches 120,000 children, parents, and educators from more than 18 Oregon and four Washington counties. OCT offers a year-round Acting Academy for students ages 3–18 and the unique Young Professionals mentoring program. The company also offers a range of services to schools and the community, including teacher professional development, resource guides and suggested lesson plans, Loud & Clear (a public speaking workshop), an extensive outreach program, and student internship and apprenticeship opportunities.

Under the shared vision of healthier kids and communities, Kaiser Permanente Northwest and OCT are delivering free Educational Theatre Programs to schools and community organizations in Oregon and SW Washington. This innovative collaboration helps catalyze healthy life choices. Through free touring productions, residencies, workshops and after-school programs, the Educational Theatre Program has served over 200,000 students since its inception in 2006.

Oregon Children’s Theatre is a resident company of Portland’5 Centers for the Arts and a member of Theatre Communications Group, Travel Portland, and ASSITEJ, the international children’s theater association.
