JAMBO GOES TO THE MOON

This book is written for children 6 to 10. It has two parts. The first is a story about the chimpanzee called “Jambo”. The second is a workbook that teaches creative writing and vocabulary development. A Teacher’s Guide provides answers to all the questions and the word Bingo Games. It also offers suggestions for the discussion and creative writing activities. All the creative writing assignments are based on Jambo’s adventures. The children are encouraged to use their imagination to help solve some of Jambo’s problems. Word Bingo games are provided to reinforce the vocabulary they will need. They involve listening to match the oral definition to the written word. Each new game introduces about eight new words and reviews words from previous pages. Many of the words they will need for spelling can be found in the story. In some places, suggested words are provided at the bottom of the page. Although this will help the children with their spelling, it will not fulfill all their needs. Concerns about spelling can seriously interfere with a student’s creative ideas. In the West, this problem has been addressed by encouraging the children to try to spell phonetically. Their attempts are positively received by the teachers, as the children are using the phonics they know, while having the freedom to express their own ideas.

Their creative ideas are the most important. They will learn to spell as they progress through school.

Each teacher responds to phonetic spelling in their own way. Some may write some of the words on the child’s paper, while others will accept what has been written and include some of the more commonly used words in the weekly spelling lesson. Whatever the approach, freeing the student to express and write their creative ideas, is the most important.

Creative thinking needs to be encouraged from an early age, before adult inhibitions set in. Throughout Janbo’s Workbook, the number of sentences or length of the paragraph to be written, has often been left to the discretion of the teacher. The goal will be for the children to express their ideas in writing, according to their individual abilities.

We hope your students will enjoy helping Jambo solve some of his problems.

Jambo Goes to the Moon Teacher’s Guide CHAPTER 1 Page 1 Exercise1: Jambo lived in Africa. He was a very smart chimpanzee. His mother and father worried about him. He was always in trouble. Jambo was born with a very smart brain. He was always thinking up new tricks. Page 1 Exercise 2: For Jambo’s tricks, encourage the students to use their imaginations. EXAMPLES: - hide some of his parent’s food – hide in the trees Page 2 Exercise 3 Suggested answers. NOTE: The word “scrāpes” is pronounced with a long “ā”. “Sometimes Jambo’s close scrapes were dangerous. Write the two dangerous close scrapes that he had.” Jambo poked sticks into the ears of sleeping crocodiles. He pulled the tails of the elephants. The children may require help with spelling some of their words. Words from the above sentences could be put on the board. Page 2 Exercise 4: Suggested answers. For the picture and paragraph the teacher could suggest things like: swimming, cooking, dancing, basketball, or playing an instrument.

Page 3 Exercise 5: We suggest you have the children play Bingo several times before they do Page 4. In this way they are introduced to the new vocabulary in a highly motivated setting and should be able to complete the “MATCH THE MEANING” without too much help.

HOW TO PLAY BINGO DIRECTIONS: First, the students are to match the meaning by writing the numbers of the words in List 1 beside the meanings in List 2. EXAMPLE: 1 They have long strong tails.

Next, they are to write the words in List 1 into the BINGO squares. The words should be placed randomly so that all of the printed cards are different.

The meanings in List 2 can then be called to begin playing the game as outlined below.

The teacher or a student can call the meanings in List 2, allowing the students time to find the matching word(s) among the ones that they have printed into the squares. Some help is given as the

game is played, as the goal is for the students to learn the vocabulary.

For the first game, the students are to mark the matching word box with a small X in the top left-hand corner. More games can be played using a different colored marker on the same card.

The winner(s) of the game call BINGO when they have a straight and complete row of X marked boxes. The marked rows can be in a straight vertical line, a straight horizontal line, or a straight

diagonal line. The diagonal line goes from corner to corner. Don’t allow play using the numbers.

The FREE box is counted as a marked word when it is a part of the completed row. The game can be played a number of times until the students know the vocabulary well.

Females aren’t usually described in this way.
