JAMPRO CONTACTSSamantha Forbes

Consulting Officer, Export and Market Development [email protected]

Beyond its image as a tourist destination, Jamaica is a place to do business on a global scale. Jamaica Promotions Corporation (JAMPRO) – the national investment and export promotion agency – is that gateway which connects the

world to Jamaica, enabling entrepreneurs from around the globe to tap into the wealth of trade and investment opportunities available in the country.

JAMPRO was established in 1988 to stimulate, facilitate, and promote the develop-ment of trade and industry, and export and investment activities in all sectors of the island’s economy. The agency drives this process through focus on a number of tar-geted sectors, which include the creative industries (film, music and entertainment), manufacturing, tourism, agri-business, information and communication technology, mining and professional services.

Investment and trade promotion are the two focal points of JAMPRO, which has two of-fices in Jamaica as well as overseas offices in Canada (North America Regional Office) and London (European Regional Office).

Operating under the direction of the Ministry of Industry, Investment and Commerce (MIIC), JAMPRO’s continuous mission is to promote Brand Jamaica, attract and land jobs and wealth-creating investments to Jamaica and secure lucrative markets for high quality Brand Jamaican products.

The agency is committed to ensuring sustainable development arising from foreign direct investment into the country - both in terms of the environment and in the deep-ening of the absorptive capacity of the economy.

JAMPRO is also keen on making local businesses export-ready, ensuring the sustain-able development of the export sector, and boosting Jamaica’s overall export perfor-mance. The agency scouts out and packages opportunities for trade with overseas markets and opportunities for local and foreign direct investment. JAMPRO, thus seeks to maintain business relationships with key players in international markets which can help create this competitive advantage.

CARITA JAMAICA LIMITED

Carita Jamaica Limited (previously Marketing Developments Limited) was registered in 1984 to access the marketing opportunities in the fresh produce and processed food sectors. The company has grown from a one person operation in the first year to a team of 20 (12

women and 8 men) over the years. The company has handled a wide range of products, from the 1st container of processed food items to hot peppers, tubers, vegetables, tropical fruits, herbs and spices.

The staff participates in training programmes on an ongoing basis to maximize efficiency and productivity. The company has also offered training in export procedures and handling of fresh produce for export to start-up companies. In an effort to improve competitiveness and to access market niches, the company has participated in workshops on labeling, packaging, marketing and HACCP. In addition the company has participated in Food Shows in the USA, Canada and the UK.

Some years ago, the market potential of added value to local fresh produce pushed the company to embark on a programme to bring 150 acres into production at St. Leonard’s, Westmoreland in Western Jamaica. From a total acreage of 180, the following has been utilized: 40 acres is in plantains, 15 acres in breadfruit, 15 acres in ackee, 40 acres in yams, 3 acres in pumpkin, 3 acres in callaloo, 1 acre in avocado. The farm is privately owned and located 10 miles from a food processing plant which meets FDA approval for ackee export to the USA. It also serves as a mother farm for 20 small farmers who grow hot peppers for export. The farmers benefit from support and extension services channeled through government run programmes. We also work with women to encourage production and entrepreneurship toward achieving financial independence.

A community based project was started in St Thomas for packing, warehousing and chilling room facilities. This has facilitated pre-cut value added products for the domestic, hotel and export trade. Research and product development resulted in a line of cooked and chilled products such as Roasted Breadfruit, Sweet Potato, Yellow Yam, Callaloo, Jackfruit and Pepper Mash which have been successfully introduced into the USA and Canada.

HONEY BUN (1982) LIMITED

Herbert Chong and wife Michelle, founders of Honey Bun Bakery, began operations at Span-ish Court, New Kingston in 1982; their vision was opportunity and growth. Thirty (30) years later, Honey Bun has developed into an immensely valued, recognized and loved Jamaican

brand, known for freshly baked, premium quality products.

By 2005, it was clear that Honey Bun had the potential to become one of the leading brands in the market, and the Chongs were again on the move, this time to the company’s present location at 26 Retirement Crescent to meet the growing demand. With a modern factory space, retro-fitted with upgraded bakery equipment and a highly specialized team, the company expanded their portfolio with the introduction of another brand, Buccaneer Jamaica. Product development was also a major focus, with Honey Bun being widely recognized as driving the trend for innova-tive, value-added products such as cheese bread and cinnamon rolls. What had been a small retail bakery with a handful of staff, had evolved into a vibrant 24-hour, 7-days a week wholesale bakery, employing over 200 Jamaicans delivering the brand daily, practicing world class standards throughout its operation.

Today the brand is still synonymous with superior quality, superior convenience and superior value. It is widely regarded as Jamaica’s number one for taste in baked snack products, as is evi-denced by the company being chosen for the National Quality Awards in both 2007 and 2008. With distribution spanning key supermarket chains, gas stations and small retail outlets locally, and select outlets in the Caribbean, North America and Europe, the company is destined for in-ternational growth having been awarded the Jamaica Exporters’ Association coveted Chairman’s Award for Growing Exporter in 2008. Honey Bun is ultimately known in the baked goods market as “a little love in every bite” and recognized locally and internationally as an example of a strong, world class brand of Jamaica. In June 2011, Honey Bun made history, being the first Pastry maker to list on the Jamaica Junior Stock Exchange after an overwhelming over subscription. In 2011 Honey Bun achieved 3 exceptionally notable awards; the Jamaica Exporter’s Association MSME Award as well as the Jamaica Manufacturer’s Award for Competitiveness and the Buy Jamaican Build Jamaica Award.
