HISTORY

Jamaica was inhabited by Arawak Indians These peaceful, seafaring people greeted

Columbus when he first visited the island in 1494.

It remained under Spanish rule until 1655.

by the Maroons. the British captured Jamaica from the

Spanish.

The island covers over 4,000 square miles.

The island is made up of coastal lowlands. The climate of Jamaica is tropical, hot and

humid on its coast, and mild inland. There geographic location is 18 15 N, 77

30 W

Olympic medals. Jamaica is the third largest island in the

Caribbean. Rum is the national drink of Jamaica. A beneficiary of the Caribbean Basin
