The French Revolution

The French Revolution took place from 1789-1799 in which the French people overthrew the monarchy and made a democracy.

It started because peasants were displeased with the king and the government.

They saw the king as ineffective and indecisive.

The main reason was that King Louis XVI made a huge amount of national debt in helping in the American Revolution so the king made high and unfair taxation.

How It Started

On July 14, 1789 a huge mob marched to the Bastille.

The mob was searching for gun powder and prisoners taken by the king.

Some members of Frances national guard were there.

 The Bastille was governed by a man named Marquis de Launay.

Fact #1 The storming of the Bastille.

More than 15,000 people we beheaded at the guillotine.

People would pay money to get a spot close up to the beheadings for the guillotine. The guillotine was like a sports event for use today.

The guillotine was invented in France in 1789, but it wasn’t fully developed until 1792.

The most people killed at the guillotine was 500 during the French revolution.

After King Louis the XVI died his wife was imprisoned with her children because people thought she killed the king. While in prison her son was taken away, Louis Charles, and then disappeared under suspicious circumstances. When she got out she lead a parade of prominent and not so prominent people to there death. She killed many innocent people in her path. They marched against the guillotine to save people from being beheaded for helping her parade.

This is the parade that king Louis XVI wife lead on the guillotine.

Fact #4 Napoleon Bonaparte.Napoleon was born on August 15, 1769 on

the island of Corsica and he was the Second son of 7 siblings.

Napoleon witnesses the storming of the Tuileries Palace and the dethroning of the French King, Louis XVI.

On March 2, 1786 Napoleon was given command of the French army in Italy.

Napoleon was an important asset to the French in the French revolution.

On May 18, 1804, Napoleon makes himself emporer.

On March 5, 1821 Napoleon Dies.

The French Revolution ended on the 24th of December 1799.

The coup by napoleon and the French consulate against the directory on the 10th of November 1799 is what mainly ended it.

There was no real winner of the French revolution.

By the time the French revolution dissolved into political infighting the real losers were the citizenry of France and the poor.

The treaty that made it official was the treaty of Amiens.

When Napoleon became emperor he started a war with almost every country with a monarchy. The Revolution also gave a huge boost to science and literature, and freedom of speech. The other governments in Europe came under pressure by the common people, who also wanted equal rights.
