the PoSItIon“Growing up at JIS, I felt like I could achieve anything I wanted and push myself to become even better with every activity offered.” So says an alumna of Jakarta Intercultural School, a diverse, international community of learners that is at once challenging, nurturing, and student-centered. This school, which was founded by United Nations workers in 1951, enrolls 2,400 students from approximately 60 nations, who are taught by 280 faculty from approximately 25 nations. Despite its size and diversity, there is a remarkable sense of inclusivity, shared purpose, and community at JIS. This tangible spirit of community is powerful; indeed, it often transcends into a true sense of family.

JIS offers its students an innovative, dynamic, and forward-looking educational program from Early Childhood through High School. Students may elect to pursue either the AP or International Baccalaureate Diploma program, and a full suite of electives and co-curricular activities enriches and enlivens the academic program. With a deep and genuine pride that pervades the entire school community and a talented, committed faculty that feels supported and encouraged by the school, JIS has a tradition of strong yet sensitive leadership and is supported by a dedicated and caring Board of Trustees. As an administrator said, “It’s a school where you will become a better teacher—and a better person.”

JIS now seeks a new Head of School, effective July 2017. The school offers the successful candidate an extraordinary opportunity to be an active and engaged leader of a large, dynamic, progressive, and well-respected school. Rarely have the consultants encountered a school with such a strong sense of its own identity as well as a powerful spirit of community and purpose. The next Head of JIS will be secure in his or her identity as a leader and educator, capable of providing strong direction yet able to be both open and humble. This is a place that will welcome a person who genuinely loves schools and children and who enjoys embracing the unique culture and vision of JIS while leading it forward in concert with its mission and values.

School hIStoryFounded by UN workers in 1951, JIS originally enrolled just five students. The school was a pioneer in introducing relevant schooling for English-speaking children of expatriates in the newfound Republic of Indonesia. From its early days, the school’s international identity was clear; it was called the Joint Embassy School, reflecting its connection to its British, American, Australian, and (then) Yugoslavian embassy partners.

In 1978, the school changed its name to Jakarta International School, and an additional name change occurred in 2014. Today, Jakarta Intercultural School sets high expectations for its students. Its standards-based, inquiry-infused, results-oriented process engages students in learning and encourages them to seek personal excellence in every pursuit.

the SchoolFaculty at JIS strive to integrate relevant, contemporary, experiential learning across levels and disciplines. Students are empowered to engage in their learning, and they grow within their community and as world citizens. Proud of its connection to Indonesia, the school builds an inclusive community and consistently works to strengthen its ties to its host country. JIS’ hunger for continuous improvement reflects the optimistic and entrepreneurial nature of Indonesia itself—a young democracy striving to establish itself on the global stage.

The school has recently adopted four learning dispositions it believes are essential at every age of life. The traits of resilience, resourcefulness, relating, and reflectiveness are modeled and discussed throughout the school, from the youngest learners in Early Childhood to the near-graduates in the High School.

Amid a strong extracurricular program, two beautiful campuses, and a unique intercultural atmosphere, academics remain the focal point at JIS. Learning is the main priority for community members, who view it as a developmental, life-long process that transforms by challenging one’s thinking and building knowledge, skills, and understanding.

This process begins in the early childhood program, which enrolls students aged three to five. The program is play-based and inspired by the Reggio-Emilia philosophy of early childhood education. Understanding that young children learn best through encounters with the world rather than through abstract and formal academic procedures, teachers guide their students in social/emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development. They form strong connections with students who are eager to learn and grow.

These connections continue in Elementary School, which enrolls students in grades one through five. At this level, children learn to become competent learners in a caring community—they engage daily in thinking, creating, inquiring, feeling, problem-solving, and doing. The academic program blends the best educational programs from around the world, with a strong focus on inquiry, literacy, and numeracy, bolstered by studies in science, technology, social studies, Bahasa Indonesia, the arts, and physical education. Outside the classroom, students can explore their interests and hone their skills through involvement in choirs, musicals and plays, sports, dance, visual art, swimming, strings, service activities, and more. They grow as a connected community through traditions such as Indonesia Week, UN Day, Earth Day, Talent Show, and spirit days.

mIddle School

Middle School students at JIS forge strong connections—with their friends, with their teachers, and with their experiences. They are encouraged to explore the world joyfully and freely, asking themselves key questions as they transition from childhood to adolescence both academically and emotionally.

Teachers channel the energy of this exciting time of life with a structured and balanced curriculum that seizes each student’s attention and fuels a lifelong love of learning. Students pursue coursework in the core classes of math, science, English, and social studies, which are complemented by an elective and exploratory program that includes courses in technology, design, movement, visual art, vocal and instrumental music, drama, Indonesian studies, electronic world, robotics, and navigating Middle School.

Outside the classroom, students continue to explore their interests

JIS prepares its High School students for all of life’s possibilities. Students are enriched with the support they need from teachers, advisors, and administrators as they take new risks and responsibilities in an atmosphere of trust. Through this combination of nurturing and rigor, they develop their dispositions and discover their passions.

Students have a rich array of options in this division, which truly comprises a self-directed community of positive learners. Students can choose to meet with teachers, conduct research, do homework, or socialize during Honor Pass. This period mitigates stress for students, who are often committed to various after-school activities and sports teams, and helps them manage their own time.

JIS is the only school in Jakarta that offers both the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and Advanced Placement (AP) programs. Students may elect to take individual IBDP or AP

classes in areas of interest, or they can complete the full IB Diploma or AP Program.

JIS belongs to the Interscholastic Association of Southeast Asian Schools, which competes with six top international schools in Asia. IASAS schools host each other for tournaments, exchanges, conventions, and competitions. Student athletes compete against teams from top international schools in Asia in cross country, volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, swimming, tennis, track and field, badminton, and softball. Students may also join after-school clubs and activities in drama, dance, forensics, debate, music, art, Model United Nations, and math competition.

Service learning is an important aspect of life at JIS. In the High School, students invest in their local community by establishing respectful relationships and awareness for worthy causes, volunteering at orphanages, building homes, providing disaster relief, participating in schools for the handicapped, and adopting projects in Indonesian communities close to the school.

Jakarta, IndoneSIaThe largest city in Indonesia, Jakarta is an alpha-global city characterized by swift economic growth and a varied and diverse combination of cultures. Since Indonesia gained independence in 1945, Jakarta has been its capital. The nation’s founding president envisioned Jakarta’s greatness, investing in large government-funded projects including the construction of a highways and roads, monuments, shopping centers, and government buildings.

Jakarta Intercultural School’s diversity is mirrored in the “melting pot” culture of Jakarta as a whole, whose economic and political centrality have attracted people of all customs, languages, dialects, and traditions. Each year, visitors come to Jakarta for cultural festivals such as the Jakarta International Film Festival, Jakarta International Java Jazz Festival, Jakarta Fashion Week, Jakarta Fashion & Food Festival, Jakarta Fair, and more.

With a population of more than 10 million, Jakarta is a major city with exceptional opportunities for residents of all backgrounds. Sprawling, dynamic, and constantly evolving, Jakarta reflects the tremendous warmth of its people, the rich culture of Indonesia as expressed in food, textiles, art, and dance, and the incredible travel opportunities that are easily accessible from the city.

oPPortunItIeS and challengeS As one Trustee said, “JIS provides a lifetime sense of belonging, community and loyalty.” The next Head of School will inherit a robust, forward-thinking school community that takes genuine pride in what is happening in classrooms, on the sports fields, in extracurricular activities, and in the extensive service projects undertaken by students and staff. The school is well-served by a dedicated 11-member Board of Trustees that acts as steward of the JIS mission and has planned carefully for a well-resourced, truly beautiful physical plant. The Board is respected and valued by the entire school community (as one faculty member said, “The Board has served us well”). As evidenced by comments from various members of the community, the teaching staff are qualified, dedicated, and student-centered; they appreciate the autonomy they are given in the classroom and the encouragement to be innovative risk-takers. The faculty, staff, and parents appreciate the integrity,

transparency, and welcoming spirit of the leadership team. The members of the Indonesian staff exhibit true dedication to the school, and their hard work is greatly appreciated by the teaching staff. Students appreciate the freedom they are given to develop their interests and curiosity while understanding that they must take responsibility for their learning. There is a high degree of parent involvement in organizations that support their children’s education. Students, staff, and parents are also actively involved in one of the largest and most diverse community service programs of any school in the world. The school is truly a center of the community, opening its doors to more than 3,000 non-JIS students and adults through the various programs offered year-round by JIS Academy.

At the same time, JIS also presents the next Head of School with the challenge of leading a proud and complex institution forward, preserving its strengths—and, even more, its spirit—while ensuring that it remains forward-looking, innovative, and contemporary. Areas for concentration include ensuring that it is able to serve the needs of its diverse population—not only students, but the families, teachers, and staff who make up its community. Similarly, as Indonesia continues to evolve politically, the school must be responsive to changing government regulations and foster and strengthen its external relationships. Specific challenges such as the ownership of a portion of the campus must be resolved, and the school must be proactive in reaching out and ensuring that it is understood not as an elite, exclusive institution but as a place that contributes in many ways to the future of Jakarta and Indonesia. In light of significant challenges faced by the school in recent years, the next Head of School must be a steady, strong, and principled leader with the experience and capacity to manage exciting yet unpredictable opportunities that lie ahead.
