Continued from Previous Page… We are very regretful to inform that the regular Monthly Bhavana is cancelled due to the lack of member interest. If members would like to do Bhavana at the temple, they are more than welcome to do so. Please let the EC know so that we can check for any program conflicts. Our automatic main gate is fully functional now. Please see the later part of this newsletter for more details. When the gate is closed, please keep a safe distance for the gate to OPEN INWARD. We are requesting everybody to sign up for our weekly/biweekly newsletter through JSGD yahoo group. All you need is an Email address. Email is the fastest and most efficient way to communicate with our members. Last minute changes and/or cancellations will be conveyed only through JSGD yahoo group messages. When in doubt, always call the temple to verify any event. Member statements were sent out last week. We must receive your payments by Dec 31 in order to qualify for 2009 tax year deduction. Please do not wait for the last minute to mail or make payment. Thanks for your cooperation. As you all know that success of any event depends on support of volunteer members like you. We introduced the online version of the volunteer signup sheet during the Patt program. Volunteers signed up and welcomed this simplified process. We will continue with the same process for all of our major events. "Volunteers are not paid - not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless" Be safe during the winter… Thanks, Rajiv Shah Jayesh Mehta President, Executive Committee Chairman, Board of Trustee

BOT CORNER The 2010 BOT will see new faces to represent the JSGD. We are fortunate to have dedicated members who have taken up the challenge to lead our Society with great potentials. The current outgoing members: Jayesh Mehta (Chairman), Praful Shah (Vice- Chairman), Pravinbhai Shah (Treasurer) and Jagdishbhai Shah (Trustee) are grateful and happy to have served the JSGD. We would like to extend our Michhami Dukkadam to all if we have hurt your feelings. The new BOT is comprised of young and not so young but energetic members of our Society. The new members joining the BOT are: Rajendra Modi, Rajiv Maheshwari, Sailesh Jain and Nikhil Kothari. BOT would like to extend its appreciation to the Nomination Committee for working hard for bringing in a balance of experience and energy to the new BOT. Patt Installation The Patt program was a success. Despite less than expected attendance, we were able to raise approximately $168,000 in new pledges. JSGD will only accept pledges for the sponsorship of the Sammetshikharji Patt. All slots for the Shatrunjay Patt are filled up and no new names will be accepted. Members wishing to pledge for Material donation can do so for both the Patts. JSGD would like to thank Chunibhai Gala, Nalinbhai Shah and Arvindbhai Shah for coordinating the installation in record time. Echo Park School Property (ES) BOT is still evaluating the feasibility with the Long Range Planning Committee (LRPC) to purchase the property. Following are some of the major concerns that are being examined: 1. How much funds annually the Temple need to provide for expenses to support the ES (mortgage, upkeep and

maintenance)? 2. Since the ES property will not be rented out, what mechanism will be used to generate funding? 3. What manpower resources are needed and available? If we need a caretaker then identify the costs associated with it.

Team of volunteers to oversee the day to day functioning of Echo School. Current committees will not be able to maintain both the properties.

4. Since the Study Class will not be conducted at ES, what other activities can be encouraged? Most of the activities suggested during the Diwali program have been performed at the Temple without much success due to lack of member's interest.

5. Revisit the cost of $500,000 for Parking lot at the next door property. 6. Generation of funds – projections needs to be revisited. Automatic Main Gate We are happy to inform that the electrically operated front gate is fully functional. The gate will open and close at specific times. The information is provided in this Jain Vani. Please observe the changes in the operations of the closing and opening of the gates. 2010 Fundraising Event Please mark your calendar for the 2010 Fundraising dinner that will be held on Saturday, March 13, 2010, at Burton Manor. Congratulations We would like to congratulate Sh. Vastupalbhai Shah for accepting the position of JAINA Director, representing JSGD. Please join us in congratulating him for his new position as a JAINA Director.

• On November 26th, 2009 JOY hosted our annual Navkaar Jaap, and it was a huge success. We raised over $700, which will be going towards JOY and PETA. PETA also known as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is an organization that believes in animal rights and non-violence. Since we believe in non-violence too, we donated part of our earnings from the Jaap to them.

• Thank you to Sangeeta Shah and Kalpana Ravani, for helping us with everything at the Jaap. Thank you for helping us clean up the kitchen, warm up the theplas, making the chai, and everything else. We couldn’t have done it without you!

• On December 11th, JOY is collaborating with Gujarati Samaj Youth, and we are planning a holiday themed movie night. All ages are welcome! We will be having fun games along with movies for the kids. Parents can come and hangout too! The movie night starts at 6:30. This movie night is to help those who are in need during the holidays, so as an entrance fee, we are requesting you bring either $5 or two unopened toys. We will be donating the toys to Toys for Tots.

• Heads up to JOY members- we will be having Winter Camp February 12th-15th. Mark your

calendars!

Kellogg's® cereal products Our Executive Committee Member ‘Chirag Jhaveri’ had sent an email to Kellogg’s for verifying whether their cereal products contain “Gelatin” or not. Kellogg's website does not list “Gelatin” as one of the ingredients but here is the response; he received from their Customer Support Department.

From: "[email protected]" <kellogg@casupport. com> To: [email protected] Sent: Thu, November 19, 2009 10:31:58 PM Subject: Kellogg's® Consumer Affairs 020572614A Chirag, Thank you for your inquiry regarding gelatin used in some of our products. We are glad you contacted us and we are happy to provide you with this information. Gelatin is used to help the texture of the product and is derived from either beef or pork. All gelatin used at Kellogg is certified Kosher. Gelatin derived from pork is found in Kellogg's® cereal products that contain marshmallow additives, for example Kellogg's® Marshmallow Froot Loops cereal and Kellogg's Smorz® cereal. It is also found in all varieties of Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats® Squares and Special K® Protein Snack Bars. Gelatin derived from beef is found in all varieties of Kellogg's® Frosted Pop-Tarts®, Kellogg's® Frosted Mini-Wheats® cereal, and Kellogg's® Rice Krispies Treats™ cereal. None of the equipment that comes in contact with the gelatin in Kellogg's® Frosted Pop-Tarts® is used in the production of the other pastries. As a result, Plain (unfrosted) Kellogg's® Pop-Tarts® do not contain gelatin. The pre-gelatinized wheat starch contained in some of our toaster pastries is derived from wheat and does not contain any gelatin. All Kellogg's® fruit snacks contain gelatin. In fruit snacks beef and pork gelatin are used interchangeably based on availability in the marketplace. Again, thank you for contacting us. We appreciate your loyal use of our products and hope that this provides you with the information you need to make food choices appropriate for you and your family. Sincerely, Davina L.
