Jaguar Network

Changing customer challenges Jaguar Network has grown rapidly over the lastfew years. Building on its origins as a hosting serv-ices company, it now offers a diverse range oftelecommunications, cloud, hosting and securitysolutions to its customers. It is particularly proudof its highly scalable and configurable cloud-basedinfrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) and platform-as-a-service (PaaS) solutions.

“We saw the potential of the cloud from the out-set and wanted to make sure we were well posi-tioned to help our own customers take advantageof what it has to offer,” explains Kevin Polizzi, president of Jaguar Network. “We’ve always made

sure we use best-of-breed technologies in thesolutions we develop and so have used serverspowered by Intel Xeon processors for a numberof years as part of our cloud platform.”

Like the cloud itself though, the market segmentin which Jaguar Network operates is continuouslyevolving, and its customers’ needs do not stay thesame. While it provides services to customers inmany industries of many sizes, a large proportionof its customer base is made up of fast-growingsmall to medium enterprises. They want to takeadvantage of cloud technologies, but often strug-gle to support them with limited IT budgets andinternal resources.

“These customers need really powerful cloudplatforms to support critical business applications, and they need to be easily and rapidly scalable,”says Polizzi. “However, they also need to be costeffective. For this reason we decided to look intothe possibility of switching from traditional harddrives to solid-state drives as part of our solutionstack.”

Knowing that replacing the hard drives in existingservers with more power-efficient and higher-performance solid-state drives can deliver strongperformance benefits, Jaguar Network beganseeking the right technology.

A solid base for the cloud Internal tests convinced the company that IntelSSDs would fit the bill well. “We found that switch-ing the hard drives in one customer’s cloud environ-ment for Intel SSDs would increase the performanceof their Web-based platform by 200 percent,” saysPolizzi. “In addition to the performance improve-ments, we believe that the lower power con-sumption of Intel SSDs can deliver strong energyefficiency, which in turn can create cost savingsfor us and our customers.”

Having evaluated the technology and found itcapable of delivering significant performance andefficiency benefits, Jaguar Network incorporatedIntel SSDs into its cloud offerings.

A fast-growing customer One customer that relies on Jaguar Network’ssolutions and Intel® technology is CrossKnowledge.Based in France, it develops eLearning applicationsand content for large enterprises.

It has hundreds of customers around the world, and millions of users, so the reliability and respon-siveness of its platform are essential. “Learnerswill get bored and give up if their content takestoo long to load,” explains Vincent Alloo, CTO atCrossKnowledge. “A large volume and variety ofmultimedia content types combined with a largeand demanding user base means we can’t affordto get the IT that supports our eLearning resourceswrong.”

The company needed a solution provider thatwould deliver network storage, load balancingand firewall, with high performance and scalabil-ity throughout. After looking at a number of op-tions it found that Jaguar Network’s solution, which included Intel SSDs, the Intel Xeon proces-sor E5 family and Intel® Ethernet Adapters, wasthe only one to meet its demands affordably.

“We were very impressed with the Intel SSDswhen we tested them,” continues Aloo. “We foundthat by replacing just one 300GB hard disk witha 600GB Intel SSD S3500 series, we doubled ourcapacity. This makes a huge difference for us, asour usage rate doubles every year, yet we haven’tneeded to add any more servers to our cloudplatform.”

Lessons learned

Sometimes a small change can make a big diffe-rence. It’s not always necessary to rip and re-place an entire platform to deliver strong results.By identifying one element of its solution thatcould be improved – replacing hard disks withSSDs – Jaguar Network created big cost savingsand performance improvements for its customers.

CrossKnowledge looks forward to a continuedcollaborative relationship with both Jaguar Net-work and Intel in the future. “Jaguar has justopened a new data center near our headquarters,so we will take advantage of its hosting capabili-ties,” says Alloo. “We also value the opportunityto have access to the latest Intel technologies, since we can evaluate their potential and betterplan where and how we need to invest in our ITso that it continues to deliver the outstandingeLearning environment that our users expect.”
