To All Nobles, Ladies and Friends of Jaffa,
On February 22 at about 11:00am while working in the office, a delicious aroma permeated the room. Then and there, I knew the Jaffa Sports Show was about to begin and it was almost time for lunch!
This year’s Sports Show was a success and very well attended. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Rex, Paul, Jill and Becky for all of their hard work before, during and after the show. My thanks also to the Units, Clubs and individuals who came out to help make this another great show. Another BIG thank you goes to our custodial staff for going the extra mile in making our Sports Show run smoothly.
Nobles and Ladies, April brings our annual Circus! If you have not used your circus coupons, consider sending them with your $20 payment to Ill. Sir Foster Snively, Chairman of the Circus Daddies Committee. This will provide an opportunity for some school students to take a field trip to our Circus. Remember, for some, this is a once in a lifetime event and will create memories that will last forever. The Circus is a lot of work and it’s a lot of fun, come join us at the Circus. You won’t believe how excited those children are!
Next will be the Potentate’s Reception on April 27th and the Aides and Lanny Edwards are planning a wonder-ful evening and we’re all hoping for a nice turnout from the Jaffa family. Entertainment will be provided by a group from Selinsgrove called “Into the Spin.” See page 17 for more details.
May 1st will be the Spring Business meeting, then on the 11th we will assemble at the Brush Mountain Sports-men’s Club for the Ceremonial. Remember this year’s challenge, everyone needs at least one candidate as MEMBERSHIP IS OUR FUTURE.
On May 17th & 18th we will be having our Paper Crusade. One of our most important functions of the year. Jaffa has always led the way with our Paper Crusade and the monies for the Crusade are used to provide trans-portation to the Hospitals and to help support the Hospitals and the children they serve. Please volunteer to help your Shrine Club or Unit. Remember our purpose is to inform the general public of our goals and aspira-tions and for each of us to proudly represent our fraternity and our good deeds.
Lastly, don’t forget the Juniata Memorial Day parade. More information about the details at the Unit Head meeting. Let’s show our appreciation to our service men and women and veterans. I’ll be looking for you there!
Yours in the Faith,
John Campbell

any Legion of Honor Nobles. $15.00 to join, includes 1st years dues and thereafter only $12.00 per year.
I stated in the last Journal that I would have a report from MASA Legion of Honor spring meeting in Wilkes Barre in this issue, but I messed up. Yes I did. (senior moment) It will have to be in the next issue for the meeting is march 22-23-24 after the deadline for this issue.
The Black Camel took from our ranks Ill Sir Dale W. Woomer on January 8, 2013. Ill Sir Dale was a Legion member since the 50’s. Also Noble Charles D. Graham of Homer city on November 10, 2012 (late report). A member since June 1997. keep these Nobles and their families in your daily prayers.
As of this report, there are 26 Legion Nobles (LN) that have not paid their dues. This includes 2 nobles owing 2012 & 2013 dues and 3 nobles owing their 2011, 2012 & 2013 dues. Dues are still just $12.00 per year. Let’s see if by the next issue, we can be at 100%.

Before I started to write this I checked the weather report. On the screen it said we had received 0.00 inches for the day. I don’t know where the re-porter was all day, but this reporter watched it snow all day and we have over three new inches. Of course that is the micro climate in downtown Ebensburg .
Three years ago the High-landers renewed the traditional Burns dinners that had been held for a number of years in Altoona. They had been initiated by Piper Jim Angus and with his health issues the dinners had stopped some time ago. They are held to commemorate the birth of Scots poet Robert Burns on January 26, 1759.
This year about 60 people met at Park Hills Country Club for a wonderful evening of friendship and conviviality. Our native Scot Kevin Law and his lovely wife Phyllis had gone all out with decorations and table settings. Although cold outside the evening certainly pro-vided a warm glow inside. Atty. Robert Murdoch gave “The Im-mortal Memory” and discussed Burns life and times. Then some of Jaffa’s own Highlanders played various tunes to entertain the audi-ence.
Kevin served as Master of Ceremonies and introduced this writer for some opening remarks. It was my pleasure to wel-come and introduce Potentate John Campbell and his Lady Jan. Illustrious Sir John gave brief remarks and admitted he couldn’t play the bagpipes but enjoyed listening to them anyhow. It was a grand evening and we plan to have a bigger celebration next year.
The Highlanders are one of the three units that serve meals to vendors at the Sports Show. That is always a fun time.
I’ve done it for eight years now and am getting to know some of them. Most sign up on Sunday afternoon for next year. I believe this year’s show should go down as one of the best yet.
Our special prayers go out this time for the guy who has been praying for all of us. Jaffa Chaplain Jim Harding is under the weather so please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers
Remember the children we strive to help. We march to help them walk.

Hi fellow Shriners! Been a while, but all is well and ready to go, so we’re back. Want to thank Past Po-
tentate H. Foster Snively for a job well done and welcome cur-rent Potentate John Campbell on board. Quick summary of recent months’ activities: November saw us re-elect the same Officers as in 2012. They are President John Ortz, Vice President James Jackson, Treasurer Ed Brubaker, and Secretary Ron Ferguson. At that meeting, we also set up our Christmas Party for December 3rd. At our Christmas Party, we held a brief business meeting for Treasurer’s report, Roadrunners update and general comments. We were blessed with a very fine turnout at the Fort Worth Res-taurant in DuBois including our Divan and their Ladies. A fine buffet dinner was had and great fellowship for the evening.
In January, in addition to the regular agenda, we discussed a new committee for our Paper Drive in June, a start to the Plaque Cam-paign, and our annual Ladies Night. At our February meeting, we had our usual agenda of committee reports plus a brief discussion of reviving a project from several years ago about putting a booth in our annual Community Days in June. Rick Liedl from the Erie Hospital gave us an update on current events at the hospital. Also in attendance were guests from Somerset and our Divan who gave appropriate comments. Well, brief as it is, I hope that catches us up. See you for the next issue! Yours as a Shriner, Ron Ferguson, Secretary

Our journey began in November of 2011. Our young-est daughter, Sophia was complaining of back pain and it was getting noticeably worse. There was a bump on her lower back and she couldn't stand up straight. She was 2 at the time. We made the first ap-pointment with her family doctor in Altoona. They ordered some ex rays of her spine and the results were that (she is just lumpy).
We were not satisfied with that answer at all and made an appointment with a spine specialist at the Chil-dren's Hospital in Pittsburgh for April 2012. We were very confident he would find the problem. That doctor looked at the SAME ex rays and told us she looked fine and she was probably just (acting for attention).
Not knowing where to turn I asked a doctor that goes to our church if he knew of anyone that would look at Sophia for us. He recommended Dr. Harvey in Hol-lidaysburg. We met with him in May and he ordered an MRI. It confirmed what he already knew from the ex rays was Congenital Spondylolisthesis.
This meant one of the bones in her spin was out of place at birth and over time had slipped causing it to
press on nerves. He said she would most likely need surgery but only worked on adults. He told us that he used to work at the Shriner's Hospital in Philadelphia with some wonderful doctors.
We traveled to Philadelphia in July and met with Dr. Betz and his team. He told us her condition was very serious and needed surgery as soon as possible. The surgery had to be done by a Neurosurgeon, Dr. Samdoni. In September we made our way back down for the surgery and a seven night stay in the hospital. Her team of doctors did and amazing job and the sur-gery was 100% successful! She had to be in a half body cast followed by a brace for a total of six months.
We are happy to say she is completely healed and it only took 4 months! God is sooo good! We are forever grateful for the doctors at the Shriner's Hospital. Love in Christ, The Fleck's (Ryan, Frances, Luke, Olivia,& Sophia)

Jaffa Shriners and Altoona Area School DistrictTeam-Up to Help Kids
On December 26, 27, and 28, 2013 the Jaffa Shriners and the Altoona Area School District will unite together to co-sponsor the Annual Holiday Basketball Tournament held at the Altoona Area Field House. Tournament co-directors Phil Riccio (AASD Athletic Director) and Mike Colledge (Jaffa Shriner) recently made the announcement.
“The collaboration between the Altoona Area School District and the Jaffa Shrine is a perfect fit. Both organizations share a common goal to put children and our community in the forefront. Mike and I envision this tournament growing to receive national recognition,” said Riccio.
There will be an organizational meeting for any Shriner interested in helping out with the tournament in May, 2013. Date and time will be announced at a later date.
“We are hoping to generate additional revenue for the hospitals through a tournament program book similiar to the Jaffa Circus Program Book. We need the support of everyone to sell ads to make this happen,” said Colledge.
Proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Shriners
Hospitals for Children.
