Responsibilities Senior Metallurgical Process Engineer for the operation of a ferromanganese applying a novel smelting

furnace technology. Directly managing service providers (chemical analyses and process information system). Providing specialist metallurgical support during commissioning and plant operation, targeting improved

production, product quality and process efficiency. Working with senior management and business partners on attaining process targets. Completing continuous improvement projects. Troubleshooting and researching metallurgical process aspects and unit operations. Train and supervise Engineers, Technicians and Operational personnel. Developed thermochemical models of the unique smelting furnace process, and applied it in the operation of the demonstration plant and the analysis of the process for industrial scale implementation of the furnace technology.

Successful completion of a Master’s degree in metallurgical engineering, with a project on tapping flow modelling that was applicable to the AlloyStream process.

Achievements Developed an iron ore fines sinter process model using the finite difference technique and sub-models for

physicochemical phenomena and parameter optimisation through the application of artificial intelligence methods, deployed in custom developed software.

Completed various iron blast furnace slag analyses and modelling studies, evaluating physicochemical properties, e.g. viscosity and solidus-, softening-, liquidus temperatures, and reaction kinetics, and performing thermodynamic modelling.

Evaluated process routes for a new ore reserve through thermodynamic modelling and analyses. Analysed and modelled phase formation during iron ore sintering through thermodynamic modelling and

analyses. Developed a web-based ternary diagramming application that can be used to plot contours for any property.

Achievements Part of a team that successfully commissioned an advanced process control system of a billet

homogenising furnace. Developed and applied several predictive and reconciling mass and energy balances of pyrometallurgical

processes, using Microsoft Excel and interfaces to thermodynamic libraries. Completed finite element modelling studies to analyse smelting furnace refractory performance for several

clients. This included modelling hot-face reactions using the thermochemical package, FactSage. Part of the core team that developed a generic software system to capture discrete activity record data for

an Ilmenite smelter in China, including capturing of the user requirements, and on-site commissioning and training.

Part of the core team successfully developing a generic server-client based software system assisting engineers in the operation of smelting processes. This included development of specific models for viscosity, refractory wear, liquidus temperatures and predictive and reconciling mass and energy balances.

Providing on-site metallurgical support at an operation with a furnace smelting ferromanganese and ferronickel. Responsibilities included monitoring the key performance and safety indicators, making decisions to improve the process performance. For this process a predictive mass and energy balance and accounting balance were developed and used.

Conducted process analyses and audits at several pyrometallurgical plants, to analyse performance and identify opportunities for improvement.
