BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

Reverend Jacob Monroe Spangler was born on June 28, 1899 in East Berlin, PA to Curtis and

Eliza (Eyster) Spangler. He received a B.S. from Gettysburg College in 1920 and went on to

receive a M.A. from the same school in 1929. He received a Bachelor of Divinity from

Gettysburg Seminary in 1929 and did post-graduate study at Temple University and Johns

Hopkins University. He went on to receive a Master of Sacred Theology from Gettysburg

Seminary in 1935.

Rev. Spangler was ordained by the West Pennsylvania Synod on October 13, 1926 and served as

pastor at Utica Lutheran Parish of Maryland Synod from 1926-1929 and Trinity Lutheran

Church, Wrightsville, PA from 1929-1965. He retired May 1965.

Rev. Spangler also completed semester hours at the Students Army Training Corps in 1918,

receiving an honorable discharge from the United States Army on December 16, 1918.

Rev. Spangler died on September 11, 1973

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

This collection documents the activities of Rev. Jacob Monroe Spangler. Included are letters to

his wife Katherine J. (Bussman) Spangler from the years 1922-1926 and other miscellaneous

correspondence; postcards; personal papers such as his marriage and death certificate and

regarding his military service; photographs; newspaper clippings and other miscellaneous

records collected over the course of his life.
