It is my distinct pleasure to welcome you to the 2014 Jacksonville

Jazz Festival, a signature event here on Florida’s First Coast

that grows bigger and better each year. The festival will feature

a world-class lineup �lled with talented musicians who will

undoubtedly deliver the excitement we all love and draw crowds

of excited music fans.

As an annual Jacksonville tradition, not only will the main stage

vibrate with energy, but favorite activities such as the Jazz Piano

Competition, the Youth Jazz Talent Showcase, the Off Jazz Concert,

Art in the Heart of Downtown and Jazz After Dark will take place.

I am particularly enthusiastic about the new footprint for Jazz Fest

as we move the soul of jazz right into the heart of our Downtown

Entertainment District, increasing walkability and access to a

variety of businesses and restaurants while bringing the festivities

closer to the beautiful St. Johns River.

HISTORY FESTIVALO F THE

In early 1980, then Mayor Jake Godbold looked to

music, speci�cally a genre with a strong cultural tie, to bring a community together.

Saturday, October 24, 1981, was the beginning of a new idea in Jacksonville —a jazz festival, a free outdoor event that would bring people together to support the �edging Mayport community and reintroduce the world to the northeast Florida destination, Jacksonville, Florida. And people took notice. Expecting only a few hundred people to attend in 1981, event producers were blown away when nearly 25,000 people showed up for the inaugural event. Dizzy Gillespie headlined the festival.

Formerly known as the Mayport and All That Jazz Festival, the Jacksonville Jazz Festival is the stage for one of the largest, free jazz festivals in the nation. Outgrowing the format of a one-day festival in Mayport, the event moved to Metropolitan

Park. There, WJCT, a public broadcasting station, turned the event into a production that aired worldwide. For the next 15 years, WJCT and partners managed the successful riverfront festival.

In 2003, there was the rebirth of the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. The City of Jacksonville began producing the event, incorporating additional venues, including the Florida Theatre and the Ritz Theatre, and introducing activities such as an art sale and wine tasting, attracting newer audiences. In 2009, the festival footprint expanded introducing a livelier street festival atmosphere along with four stages of entertainment.

Jacksonville has seen the likes of Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, George Benson, Tony Bennett, Diane Schuur, Patti Austin, Branford Marsalis, Count Basie Orchestra, Buddy Guy, Robert Cray, Diana Krall, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis Trio, Chuck Mangione, Chris Botti, Rippingtons,

Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, David Sanborn, Pamela Williams, Spyro Gyra, Dianne Reeves, Chick Corea, David Benoit, Sonny Rollins, Karrin Allyson, Grover Washington, Jr., Kenny G, Harry Connick, Jr., Natalie Cole, Patti LaBelle, Mavis Staples and Greg Adams.

The tradition continues and the Jacksonville Jazz Festival continues to serve as a catalyst in downtown Jacksonville and a destination for jazz enthusiasts around the world.

33The Number of Jazz Festivals

Held Since Inception

The inaugural JJF was founded by former Mayor Jake Godbold and his aide Mike Tolbert in 1979. It started as a single-day event in the quaint Mayport Fishing Village. They hoped that one day of free, live music would draw a couple hundred people to help boost the struggling area. The festival quickly outgrew the site and was relocated to the newly-opened Metropolitan Park in 1982.

of Stages

The Florida Theatre will serve as a performance destination for two nights. The Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition on Thursday, May 22 and the JJF Off-Jazz Concert on Sunday, May 25. Doors will open at 6 p.m. Swing by the Swingin’ Stage located on Bay Street and Marsh Street. Dance your way down to the Groovin’ Stage located on Bay Street and Newnan Street. Take it easy at the Breezin’ Stage, which offers spectacular waterfront views at the Jacksonville Landing.

There are several notable members in the Jacksonville Jazz Hall of Fame who have made a positive impact on the jazz community. Among them are festival founders Mayor Jake Godbold and his aide Mike Tolbert (1999), former executive director of the festival Dan Kossoff (1999), distinguished educator Rich Matteson (2000), winner of the �rst Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition Marcus Roberts (2003), former WJCT vice president of Community Support Vic DiGenti (2004), the late great trumpeter Teddy Washington (2006), renowned jazz musician and festival supporter Von Barlow (2007), the late U.S. Congressman the Honorable Bill Chapell Jr. (2011), performer and educator Bunky Green (2011) and this year’s honoree, educator and festival supporter—Ace Martin.

Winners will be selected by a panel of music adjudicators who specialize in the arts forms of traditional and contemporary jazz and blues. The winner will receive a cash prize to be used expressly for the purpose of furthering his or her musical education.

The Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition presented by Keyboard Connection has been a staple in the annual festival for over 20 years. Pianists from around the world compete for a cash prize and chance to play on the main festival stage. Held at the historic Florida Theatre, the Piano Competition serves as the of�cial opening event of the 2014 Jazz Festival.

The Finalists


Lisa DeSpain is a New York City based jazz pianist/composer. She studied under Ellis Marsalis in New Orleans and in New York under Eliane Elias and Joanne Brackeen. Professionally, Lisa has served as pianist/music director for Leslry Gore, the Big Apple Circus, Theatreworks USA, and as an arranger for Alfred Music.

Aaron Lehrian, 19 years old, is a pianist from Seminole, Florida. Aaron currently studies jazz piano at the University of North Florida, under the teaching of Lynne Ariale. At UNF, he plays in both the combo band as well as the Jazz Ensemble 1. He plans to earn his bachelor’s degree and pursue a graduate degree in New York.

Oscar Perez has shared the stage with jazz legends Bunky Green, George Russell, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan and George Garzone. From his start in the church band, he has come a long way landing performances in The Theatre at Madison Square Garden and Webster Hall. His sound draws from Latin and jazz music to explore innovative arrangements.

Ryan Slatko, 20 years old, started playing at the age of 13. Currently a student at the University of North Florida, Slatko, has performed with a variety of world-class musicians such as Ed Calle, Ira Sullivan, Scotty Barnhart, and Marcus Printup. With relentless work ethic and undying passion for music, he has received and outstanding Freshman and Sophomore award at the University of Florida.

Matt Savage, now 21, has been performing since the age of 8. Since then Matt has played with some of the biggest names in jazz including Chick Corea, the Ellington AllStars, Chaka Khan, Wynton Marsalis among others. In May 2012, the Boston Globe heralded Matt’s success and graduation from Berklee College of Music in a front-page cover story, citing that “He gained early fame as a jazz prodigy beset by autism”.

Marcus Johnson Johnson is an independent Billboard-ranked musician and NAACP Image Award-nominated jazz keyboardist and pianist and a 2014 Jacksonville Jazz Festival performer.

Na’im Rashid, 2010 Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame inductee, is a retired Navy Broadcast Journalist, Jazz radio host and former Jazz Society president.

Lisa Witsell, one of the founding members of the Jacksonville Jazz Society, is a jazz musician who has played all across the U.S. in cities including: Chicago, New Orleans, Miami and Atlanta.

The Judges

The Master of CeremonyNoel Freidline returns to the Jacksonville Jazz Festival as the Master of Ceremonies for the Jacksonville Jazz Piano Competition.

Dennis Marks has performed with many of the great musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Dave Liebman, Bob Mintzer, and Pat Metheny. He appeared on Sandoval’s Grammy-Award Winning “Hot-House”.

Clyde Conner, a renowned drummer and educator. Currently, Clyde can be heard as a performer/composer/arranger with the St. Johns River City Band.

HALL OF FAME Ace Martin 2014 Ace Martin is currently Instrumental Music Chairman at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts in Jacksonville, FL, and has been since the opening of the school in 1984. Under the direction of Martin, Douglas Anderson’s Jazz Band I has been invited to play for various local, state, national and international Jazz Festival events. Many of his students have continued a career in music with an emphasis on jazz. Students have continued their education at high-ranking jazz music programs like Julliard, Berklee, Eastman, Manhattan, UNF and University of North Texas.


Drawing from his vast repertoire of rousing R&B,

intimate smooth jazz stylings, and big band songs, Bobby has the ability to entertain at any venue, for fans of all ages. In Japan and throughout Asia, he enjoys a feverish popularity, selling out shows and achieving gold and platinum status for his releases in those countries.

As a singer, he has a successful career with numerous solo releases, which have earned accolades far and wide. His songwriting skills have earned hits not only for himself, but also for well-known artists like Chicago, Boz Scaggs, Peter Cetera and Amy Grant, Neil Diamond and Al Jarreau.

Bobby’s timeless classic, “What You Won’t Do For Love” has been recorded and sampled by more than 100 artists. A sample of Bobby’s song “Open Your Eyes” appeared in the Grammy nominated platinum rap hit “The Light” by Common. All combined, Bobby’s songs and samples have contributed to over 40 million sales, while artists as diverse as Tupac Shakur, Michael Bolton, Roberta Flack, Go West, Vanessa Williams and Notorious B.I.G. have all paid tribute to the blue-eyed singer in the slouch hat. Bobby’s classic song was sung by Elliot Yamin during the �nal 3 round of American Idol 2006.

Born in Manhattan and raised in Miami, Bobby came from a show business family. His mother and father both sang and were the hosts of one of the �rst musical variety programs on television, “Suppertime.” Bobby grew up listening to show tunes, the music of Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Tony Bennett, as well as The Beatles. These early in�uences are prevalent in Bobby’s singing and songwriting.

Bobby chose a career in music at the tender age of 17. He has devoted his entire life to song writing, recording, performing and most of all making people happy. Bobby has toured the USA and the globe for 40 years, bringing his music to fans of all ages and backgrounds, and he continues to do so.

Ester Rada’s cross-cultural sound is a deep re�ection of the Israeli born Ethiopian’s heritage. Growing up in a highly religious Jewish family in more than modest conditions in Israel, gave Rada the drive to change her way of life and ful�ll her dream of creating music.

Critics describe her genre mixing sound as “gracefully combining Ethio-Jazz, funk, soul and R&B, with mixed undertones of black grooves”.

Ester is currently �nishing work on her debut album, after releasing her acclaimed �rst self-written and composed solo EP called “Life Happens” produced by Israeli producers Kuti (Kutiman/Thru-You) and Sabbo (Soulico), at the beginning of 2013

Shortly after releasing her EP the world discovered the potential of singer, songwriter, performer, and persona Ester Rada. Ester’s

increasing popularity saw her tour the Us, Canada, and Europe, and most recently the highly respected Glastonbury Festival.

She warmed up for Alicia Keys at her Israel concert, in front of 8500 people, receiving amazing critics from

The Pedrito Martinez Group has its roots planted �rmly in the Afro-Cuban Rumba tradition and in the bata rhythms and vocal chants of the music of Yoruba and Santeria. Ben Ratliff summed it up aptly for the New York Times calling it, “complex, blenderized Africa-to-the-New-World funk.”

With its formation in the current lineup in 2008, the group has developed into an extraordinarily tight and creative unit. With a home base gig in Midtown Manhattan the group has built a fan base that includes Steve Gadd, Ravi Coltrane, Taj Mahal, Eric Clapton, John Sco�eld, Roger Waters, Derek Trucks, Herlin Riley, and Will Lee.

Members include percussionist, Jhair Sala, from Lima, Peru; electric bassist, Alvaro Benavides, from Caracas, Venezuela; and keyboard player/vocalist, Araicne Trujillo, from Havana, Cuba.

Pedro Pablo “Pedrito” Martinez was born in Havana, Cuba and began his musical career at the age of 11, performing as vocalist and percussionist playing with such Cuban legends as Tata Guines, Munequitos de Matanzas. He was brought to Canada in 1998, by Jane Bunnett, to tour with her group, Spirits of Havana. His decision to remain in North America to pursue his career, proved to be an auspicious one when, two years later, the annual Thelonious Monk Institute Competition showcased Afro-Latin Hand Drumming for the �rst time ever. Pedro entered and won �rst place.

Since settling in New York City in 2000, Pedrito has performed, recorded, and/or toured with Paquito D’Rivera; Brian Lynch; Steve Turre; Me’shell Ndege’Ocello; Eddie Palmieri; Bill Summers and

Los Hombres Calientes; Arturo “Chico” O’Farrill; Stefon Harris; Bebo Valdés; Cassandra Wilson; Joe Lovano, and Sting, (for his rainforest bene�t, with Elton John and Bruce Springsteen). Pedro was also featured in 2,000, in the documentary �lm on Cuban music, Calle 54.

Mr. Martínez was also a member of the highly successful, Afro-Cuban/Afro-Beat band,Yerba Buena. He has also lent his talents to over one hundred records, including albums by Paquito d’Rivera, Issac Delgado, Eliane Elias, Stefon Harris, Steve Turre, Eddie Palmieri, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Conrad Herwig , Edie Brickell and many others. These include six records that have been Grammy® nominated and one, a collaboration between Eddie Palmieri and Brian Lynch, called “Simpatico”, that was awarded a Grammy®.

Born and raised in Jacksonville, FL – Doc credits his older brother’s love for the piano for driving him to become a musician. Doc has played

percussion for over 30 years over a diverse array of genres including Rhythm & Blues, Jazz, and Latin Jazz. Doc has performed globally in Europe, Korea, and Panama. Doc has also been selected as the opening performance for many greats including James Brown, Aaran Neville, Macy Gray, Kool and the Gang, Kirk Whalum, Brian Culbertson, and EL Gran Combo. Doc is most inspired by percussionists Ralph McDonald, Giovanni Hidalgo, and Bill Summers.

Doc aka “Mr. Jazz Festival” lights it up everywhere he performs. Doc’s uniqueness as a conga drum musician is his captivating ability to fuse Afro-Cuban percussion with Jazz to create an infectious swing that leaves his audiences in a spell bound groove. His stage presence is cooler than a polar bear’s toe nail, yet his laid back style mesmerizingly intensi�es as the core accompanying sound in his eclectic jazz band arrangements.

Doc effortlessly, yet surgically infuses the cultural power of the African conga drum beats to drive an ancestral emotion of unity and healing that tells a story.

The Airmen of Note is the premier jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force. Created in 1950 to carry on the tradition of Major Glenn Miller’s Army Air Corps dance band, today the “Note” features 18 of the most talented jazz musicians in the country and is one of the last touring big bands. As a result, it has earned an international reputation as one of the �nest and most versatile big bands of its kind in the world.

Through the years, the Airmen of Note has presented its exciting brand of big band jazz to audiences throughout the United States, dozens of countries in Europe and Asia, as well as back home in the

Washington, D.C., area. The group’s successful delivery of their recorded music to millions of fans over hundreds of media outlets worldwide is validated by industry measures, including the JazzWeek jazz chart.

The Airmen of Note’s steadfast commitment to musical excellence and reputation for setting the highest standards has earned the respect of the world’s foremost jazz artists. This has led to many collaborative efforts, recordings and performances with such luminaries as Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan and Nancy Wilson. In 1990, the Airmen of Note established the

Jazz Heritage Series, featuring the “Note” in concert with legendary icons of jazz. Artists that have participated in this series include Clark Terry, Phil Woods, Kurt Elling, Paquito D’Rivera, Nicholas Payton, Karrin Allyson and many others.

In 2010, the Airmen of Note celebrated 60 years as one of our nation’s most revered musical organizations. Ben Tucker, Marcus Roberts, Harry Connick Jr, Della Reese, Jack Wilson, are just some of the names Von has performed and recorded with. One of the �nest ensemble players around; Von takes sensitive stylistic cues from his fellow performers, engaging in sympathetic and interesting dialog with any ensemble in which he plays. His stick work is never studied or monotonous, but �lled with thoughtful listening and original thinking. Capable of the artistic understatement necessary in a quiet

restaurant, Von is equally famous for his �ery jazz drumming as well as his �oor �lling dance grooves. He is truly a seasoned performer and a master of his craft.

The Just Jazz Quartet is a Jacksonville FL based

group of musicians who combine years of experience to create a sophisticated, yet enjoyable jazz performance for their audiences. AL Jarreau has little interest in boundaries or preconceived limitations. Since the mid-

1970s, this versatile singer has applied his distinctive and instantly recognizable vocal style – a unique combination of lyrical swing and captivating vocalese – to a broad spectrum of musical genres. With this eclectic approach, he has earned much success along the way – enough to position him as the only vocalist in history to claim Grammy Awards in the three distinct genres of jazz, pop and R&B.

The most recent chapter in this journey is Al Jarreau and the Metropole Orkest—Live, a collection of the best performances from a two-night engagement at the Theater aan de Parade, located in Den Bosch, Netherlands. The recording �nds Jarreau onstage with a 53-piece orchestra from Northern Europe whose collective expertise encompasses the best elements of classical music, American jazz and all the nuanced places in between. Al Jarreau and the Metropole Orkest—Live was released on June 29, 2012 and soon earned two Grammy nominations.

AWB is widely regarded as

one of the best soul and funk bands in the history of music. Though best known for their timeless instrumental mega-hit ’Pick Up the Pieces’ the band’s strength actually lay in their consistently accomplished song-writing, stretching across several gold selling albums and multi-grammy nominations for the legendary Atlantic Records. Somewhat incongruously, given their Scottish roots, the six piece took the in�uences of their R&B; heroes—people like Marvin Gaye, James Brown, Donny Hathaway

and others—and developed their own ’authentic’ sound which was eagerly adopted by black audiences in the United States and elsewhere. While a good number of cuts—’Cut The Cake’ and ’Let’s Go Round Again’—became hit singles, many other album tracks, like ’Schoolboy Crush’ and ’Stop The Rain’ became much sampled grooves. Many more tunes, such as ’Cloudy’, and ’A Love Of Your Own’- amongst many others- stand alongside some of the �nest soul ’album tracks’ ever recorded.

The current line-up of the band—this time with noted United States recruits augmenting founder members Alan Gorrie and Onnie McIntyre—continue to record and tour around the world to ongoing critical and audience acclaim.

All this and more is perfectly illustrated in the band’s latest release is “Times Squared,” a thirteen track live CD recorded in New York City in March 2009.

Delfeayo Marsalis is one of the top trombonists, composers and producers in jazz today. Known for his “technical excellence, inventive mind and frequent touches of humor…” (Leonard Feather, Los Angeles Times), he is “…one of the best, most imaginative and musical of the trombonists of his generation.” (Philip Elwood, San Francisco Examiner.) In January 2011, Delfeayo and the Marsalis family (father Ellis and brothers Branford, Wynton and Jason) earned the nation’s highest jazz honor – a National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Masters Award.

Born in New Orleans on July 28, 1965, Marsalis was destined to a life in music. “I remember my dad (Ellis Marsalis) playing piano at the house, and me laying underneath the piano as a child, listening to him play. After brie�y trying bass and drums, in sixth grade I gravitated towards the trombone, which was an extension of my personality. Early on my in�uences and inspirations included J.J. Johnson, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, Tyree Glenn and Tommy Dorsey.” Marsalis attended the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts high school, was classically trained at the Eastern Music Festival and Tanglewood Institute, and majored in both performance and audio production at the Berklee College of Music.

About the time that he �rst started playing trombone, Marsalis was already greatly interested in the recording process. “When

I was in �fth or sixth grade, my brother Branford showed me how to create a feedback loop on a reel to reel machine. At that time there was a real need in the family for demo tapes. In fact I was recording Wynton when he was in high school. When I was in seventh grade, he challenged me to have his demo tape sound on the same level as Maurice Andre’s classical studio recordings. It was all trial

wears several hats in the Entertainment Industry. She recently played the role of Shug Avery in “The Color Purple” stage play produced by Stage Aurora and currently in another production of “The Color Purple” at The Alhambra Dinner Theatre as Church Lady Narene. Other lead roles include, but not limited to, Velma in “Crowns” and Lorrell in “Dreamgirls” at the Alhambra Dinner Theatre in Jacksonville, Florida. Her vocal ability and experience has granted her the opportunity to sing for audiences locally, regionally, nationally, and internationally. From being featured with the gospel jazz group, NOIZ, at the international launch of Davines Hair and Beauty Company in Parma, Italy to opening for Earth Wind & Fire along with C1 Jazz at the 2009 Black Expo Opening Concert, she has humbly wowed crowds with her melodic, sultry voice that ranges from �rst soprano to tenor. She sings a variety of music genres such as Jazz, Soul, R&B, Gospel and Classical. Currently, Akia Uwanda is working on her her debut album, A Brighter Side of Day.

Unique Sound formed rather quickly with four local musician’s desire to offer something truly unique to Jacksonville’s escalating music scene. Their sound can be described as a soulful fusion from the band’s education and experiences in Jazz, Gospel, Classical and R&B music. With the youngest member of the band on drums, Devin Way is a true definition of a pocket drummer as he effortlessly locks in groves with bass player Elijah Roberson. Douglas Anderson graduate, Jawren Walton provides the band with a warm blend of his influences from John Coltrane and Kirk Whalum on tenor sax. Finally, Eric Wright’s classical music studies at the University of North Florida and musical experiences in church provide the band its jazz, gospel, and classical fusion sound on piano.

F rom the early age of 3, Linda Cole was constantly

surrounded within her immediate and extended family by musical talent, participating regularly in her family group “The Singing Coles” in her hometown of Freeport, Illinois. Linda has now created a distinctly recognizable voice of her own, stemming from in�uences such as Carmen McRae, Betty Carter, Rosemary Clooney, and all the classic music of Motown. Perhaps one of her greatest inspirations comes from the most prestigious and well-known singer within her

family’s musical lineage: her father’s cousin, Nat King Cole.

Linda met pianist Joshua Bowlus in 2008, and they have since been an unstoppable musical team working together regularly across the east coast. As an up-and-coming jazz pianist, Bowlus has shared the stage with a variety of modern masters including such names as Wynton Marsalis, Chris Potter, Christian McBride, Ulysses Owens, Yotam Silberstein, Barry Greene, Danny Gottlieb, and Bunky Green among others.

Noel Freidline is a 1991 graduate of the University of North Florida, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Music (magna cum laude). A pianist, vocalist, writer and arranger, Noel has been the leader of his own group since 1991. The Noel Freidline Quintet

has released seven CD’s, their latest entitled “Live at the Jazz Corner”. With the NFQ, Freidline’s performance credits include the Montreux and Northsea Jazz Festivals, Coconut Grove Arts Festival, Nashville Summer Lights Festival, 13 appearances at the Jacksonville Jazz Festival, a three-year house band position at The Bellagio in Las Vegas, actress Julia Roberts’ surprise 35th birthday party, the Nevada Jazz Orchestra and regular performances with the Charlotte Symphony and Charlotte Philharmonic. He and his band have also appeared in the

movies The Legend of Bagger Vance and Ocean’s Eleven.

As a composer and arranger, Freidline has written and recorded music for ESPN, ABC and the Walt Disney Company, with his most recent work being featured on Monday Night Football and the NBA All-Star game. Noel is currently an adjunct lecturer in the music department at UNC Charlotte as well as the director of music at Davidson Day School, Davidson, NC.

The JU Jazz Combo I is comprised of some of the top scholarship

recipients in the Jacksonville University Jazz Program, a few of whom already achieving honors and gaining professional recognition. Ranging from Music Performance majors to a Film Major, this eclectic group performs advanced repertoire and arrangements that balance tradition and modernity and represent the top jazz ensemble in the JU Music program.

A recent jazz category winner at the 2009 IMA’s with his album “Holding Time”, John Ricci has been a performer, jazz educator and clinician in the North Florida area for over ten years. John received his Bachelors of Music in jazz studies at the University of Tennessee Knoxville, Masters of Music in jazz studies at Florida State University. He has performed with a myriad of notable artists, including Donald Brown, Julian Lage and recently Chris Potter, and has received many performance awards including a Downbeat Magazine award in 1995. He currently directs the jazz program at Jacksonville University.

Joey DeFrancesco comes from a musical family. His Grandfather Joseph DeFrancesco (his name sake) was a reed man. And of course his father “Papa” John DeFrancesco is a �ne jazz organist in his own right. At the age of 4 Joey began taking a strong interest in the organ. By the time he was �ve, he was playing Jimmy Smith songs verbatim. As the years went on his interest and love for the organ and music grew stronger. From the ages of 5-10 his father would bring him to his own gigs and let him sit in. At 10 years of age he began to play in a Band in Philadelphia, which featured legendary players Hank Mobley on Tenor Saxophone, and “Philly” Joe Jones on the Drums. At 16 he signed an exclusive recording contract with Columbia Records, releasing his �rst record “All

Of Me” at 17. This record was single handedly responsible for the great resurgence of the Hammond sound in popular music. Also in his 17th year he was called on by the great Miles Davis to join his band, and toured all over Europe. It was at that time that Joey, inspired by Miles’s sound, picked up the trumpet & started playing. To this day, Joey continues to play the trumpet, very similar to the style of Miles. At 18, Joey began touring with his own quartet. At 22, John McLaughlin called him along with drummer Dennis Chambers, to form the group the “Free Spirits”. This band toured extensively for 4 years. Joey has been around the world and back dozens of times with his own trio, but also playing and recording with some of the greatest musicians in the world

such as, Ray Charles, Bette Midler, David Sanborn, Arturo Sandoval, Frank Wess, Benny Golson, James Moody, Steve Gadd, Elvin Jones, Jimmy Cobb, George Benson, John Sco�eld, Joe Lovano, and many more. He has won the Down Beat Critics and Readers poll ever year since 2002, as well as Jazz Journalist award, and countless others. In 2004 Joey was nominated for a Grammy for his record “Falling In Love Again”, and again in 2010 for his release titled “Never Can Say Goodbye”. Currently, Joey continues to tour with his own group, and tours with David Sanborn. Joey has played a key role in the development of his signature model organ, called Numa, by Studiologic.

Kim Waters Saxophonist, composer, producer and consummate hit-maker, Kim Waters has built a solid career giving his fans what they want, along the way garnering praise from critics and fans alike and becoming one of the top �ve best-selling instrumentalists in jazz. Kim Waters’ winning combination of sensitivity and brawn, intellect and emotion, coupled with his technique and soulfulness have made him one of the premier architects of Urban Smooth Jazz and a mainstay on Quiet Storm and contemporary jazz radio.

Inspired by such jazz luminaries as Duke Ellington, Herbie Hancock, George Duke, George Benson, Cannonball and Grover Washington, saxophonist Kim Waters was born into a musical family. The Maryland native picked up his �rst instrument, the violin, at the age of eight.

Over the years, Kim Waters has been called on to perform with or open shows for the best including Al Green, Isaac Hayes, Phyllis Hyman, Teddy Riley and Guy, and Gerald Albright to name a few.

Phil PerryPhil Perry �rst came to the attention of music fans as the lead singer /writer of the Montclairs, with “Dreamin’s Out of Season” (1970) and “Begging’s Hard to Do” - a moderate hit in 1972. His bright, multi-octave range played a supporting role on dozens of albums by such artists as Leon Haywood, Anita Baker, Dave Koz, George Duke, Barbara Streisand, Roberta Flack. Johnny Mathis, Bill Withers, The Pointer Sisters, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Womack, and Wil Downing.

Through eight strong solo albums highlighting both his ability to interpret classic songs as well as his own superb genius as a songwriter, he remains one of the most beloved and soul stirring artists of our time.

Dave Valentin is a bona �de legend of Jazz, Pop & World music. He learned latin percussion as a teenager, and then switched to �ute. Discovered by Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen, Valentin was the �rst artist signed to GRP. Dave recorded over 25 albums combining the in�uence of pop, R&B and Brazilian music with Latin jazz to create a slick and accessible form of crossover

jazz. In 2003 he won a Grammy and in 2006 was a nominated for a Latin Grammy Award. Dave Valentin suffered a stroke in 2012 and has slowed down a bit but is still considered to be one of the world’s greatest �autist and a music icon.

Trombonist and SNL band veteran, Steve Turre has has consistently won both the Readers’ and Critics’ polls in JazzTimes, Downbeat, and Jazziz for Best Trombone and for Best Miscellaneous Instrumentalist (shells). Pete Escovedo has had a exciting career as one of the nation’s top percussionist. As a member of the Escovedo Brothers Latin Jazz Band; Pete bedazzled audiences and stitched his name into the tapestry of “Modern Latin Jazz”.

Pianist, Arturo O’Farrill created the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra in 2002. He and the orchestra earned a Grammy nomination in 2006 and a Grammy award in 2009. In February 2011, Mr. O’Farrill and the ALJO released, “40 Acres and a Burro”, which was nominated for a Grammy award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album. Mr. O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra are always in demand! Conga player, Chembo Corniel divides his performance time between his two musical loves: Latin jazz and “old-fashioned salsa that swings.” He made waves in 2010 garnering a Grammy nomination for Best Latin Jazz Album, for “Things I Wanted To Do”. Yunior Terry is a bassist’s bassist! He was born in Camaguey, Cuba and is the youngest son of Cuba’s famous Terry family. After studying with Charlie Haden, Rajeev Taranath and Alfred Ladzekpo he moved to New York City where he became one of the premier bassist for Latin, Afro Cuban & World music. Diego Lopez began playing Drums at age 11. By age 15, he was working professionally. In 2000, he established himself on New York’s music scene. He has worked and toured with many artists including Hilton Ruiz, Paquito D’ Rivera, Giovanni Hidalgo and Gato Barbieri. M.F. For multi-talented saxophonist and consummate creative spirit Marion Meadows, the allure of music was never too far. The charismatic, strikingly handsome, eloquent and debonair musician, who happens to moonlight as a brilliant digital designer/photographer, and semi-professional cyclist originally had aspirations to become a veterinarian.

Hailing from West Virgina and raised in Stamford, CT, Marion Meadows began his musical endeavors at age eight, studying clarinet. At age 15, after hearing iconic saxophone masters like Sidney Bechet, Coleman Hawkins, Johnny Hodges and Stanley Turrentine, Marion Meadows’ switch to saxophone was imminent.

With a clear trajectory in sight, the stars aligned for Meadows one evening at Grand Central Station, when his saxophone was mysteriously overheard reverberating through the Big Apple’s oldest railway. Emmy-winning TV composer Jay Chattaway (Star Trek fame) was so enchanted that he introduced Marion Meadows to Grammy-winning pianist, producer and label owner Bob James, who helped Meadows to launch his career as a solo artist. Close to 25 years later, scores of sold out shows, twelve critically heralded albums, a string of radio hits and collaborations with luminaries like Stevie Wonder, Eartha Kitt, The Temptations, George Benson and Norman Connors, Meadows is not through yet.

Karen BriggsBorn in New York City, brie�y lived in Englewood,

New Jersey and was later schooled and raised in Portsmouth, VA. In 1974, Karen stumbled upon learning to play violin in a public school classroom setting. It all began two months before her 12th birthday.

Throughout her career Karen has performed everywhere from Amateur Night at the Apollo to the Carnegie Hall to the Oprah Winfrey show with Diana Ross.

Karen’s inclusion in various genres of music and artists continues to diversify . She has performed with the likes of Ledisi , Loose Ends, The Hopeville Tour/DVD with Donnie McClurkin , Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Mary Mary. Mike Phillips, Wynton Marsalis, Benisi, Wu Tang Clan and Hidden Beach’s Unwrapped Series, Keb Mo, Tizer, Chieli Minnucci & Special Efx and others.

She has also performed as a featured artist, with her own band, to sold out audiences at the Mary Lou Williams Women In Jazz Festival held at the Kennedy Center in Washington DC and music festivals in America, Barbados and Mexico.

As Artist in Residence at Jacksonville University, guitarist Gary Starling has taught hundreds of aspiring musicians. He has performed with jazz legends Eddie Harris, Nat Adderley and Ben Tucker as well as Joshua Breakstone, Carla White, Jim Snidero, Irene Reid and others. He has had the honor of playing with performers such as Bob Hope, Diahann Carroll, Rita Moreno, Empire Brass Quintet, Skitch Henderson, the Jacksonville Symphony Pops Orchestra, and a live performance on Public Radio’s “Whad’ya Know”. Starling has recorded two

CDs with award-winning singer/violinist Rebecca Zapen.

Since forming his own band in 1987, Starling has performed at jazz clubs, jazz societies, schools and festivals throughout the southeast in addition to myriad private engagements. Starling spent the late 1960s and 1970s on the road as a working musician with organist, Doug Carn (Black Jazz records) and Clarence Palmer (organist for George Benson and Grant Green). Starling studied at Georgia State University, Dick Grove Music Workshop in Los Angeles, and privately with jazz guitar master Joe Pass. Additionally, he has had

informal encounters/lessons with many guitarists over the years: Wes Montgomery, Barney Kessel, Larry Coryell, George Benson, John McGlaughlin, Eric Gale, Peter Bernstein, Howard Alden and others.

Gary Starling continues his work as musician, teacher and ardent proponent of jazz, one of America’s truly original creations.

Consistency and determination de�ne Tropic Of Cancer. Since its creation in early 2000, TOC has been making its mark. In early 2000, local musician and concert promoter Jason Lewis was looking for an outlet for his musical ideas. Having worked for years in the local music scene he knew all the various players. He called on well-known area musicians Colin Westcott, a proli�c drummer, and the late Brian Hicks, a versatile saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. They began rehearsing and writing songs, eventually developing a sound

and style derived from a variety of musical in�uences, including Jazz, Reggae, Samba and African rhythms. They chose the name Tropic of Cancer since much of their inspiration came from the warm latitudes of Jamaica, West Africa, India, the Middle East and Latin America.

It wasn’t long before they were a �xture on the North Florida music scene and their “New World Lounge” sound was garnering interest from music fans as well as other area musicians. The shows became events, featuring the core members and often including a talented

cast of local musicians who would join them on stage. Each show was unique and exciting, revealing new sounds and �avors culminating 2012 with the band’s 10th anniversary show in front of a packed house. Many who had played with them over the years sat in creating a blazing showcase of the best musicians in Jacksonville.

The Jax Jazz Collective, which consists of some of the �nest jazz musicians based in Jacksonville, Florida, �rst came together in 2012. Pianist Joshua Bowlus

remembers: “Most of us had played together previously and we wanted to create a group that we felt was representative of our diverse musical experiences and

of jazz in Jacksonville in general. Our goal is to perform unique arrangements of standards, paying respect to the tradition while also playing the music in a different and modern way.” The collective is in�uenced and inspired by such well-respected straight ahead jazz groups as Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, the SF Jazz Collective and the Roy Hargrove Quintet as well as modern groove-based fusion groups such as Snarky Puppy and Kneebody. The band members are Mike Emmert (alto sax), Juan Rollan (tenor sax), Ray Callender (trumpet), Joshua Bowlus (piano and Fender Rhodes), Stan Piper (bass), and John Lumpkin II (drums).

It was during that time Musiq started to build a reputation for being musically gifted, beat boxing for MC’s, free styling on the open mic circuit, scatting at a jazz club, or just performing a cappella in the streets of Philadelphia, which is where he got the name “Musiq” and later he added “Soulchild” which is intended to respect and represent the legacy and traditions of past great soul stars.

Musiq was introduced to the world in 2000 with his platinum debut album, Aijuswanaseing (I Just Want to Sing), which included the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip Hop single, “Just Friends”. Musiq’s second single, “Love”, spent 22 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 charts and has been described by many as a classic.

Musiq Soulchild has had 2 platinum albums, 2 gold albums and 7 hit singles. He has received awards from Billboard, BET, ASCAP, BMI, and Soul Train. Musiq has also earned award nominations from MTV, American Music Awards, NAACP, and 9 Grammy nominations, including 3 for his 2007 album Luvanmusiq. Besides being a successful recording artist, Musiq is notable for his creative and unique way of titling his albums and songs. While many artists spend a lifetime chasing “international status,” classically trained singer-songwriter-musician Sebastian Mikael is already starting his career where others can only hope to �nish. Born in Sweden to

a Swedish father and Ethiopian mother, Sebastian Mikael—formerly known as De-Lor (which is French for “of gold”)—was raised in a diverse household that was enriched by music.
