Debbie Glinowiecki, PrincipalNancy Aumiller, Assistant Principal

October 4, 2012Dear Parents,

This has been one of the smoothest openings of school we have had in a few years. The students were back in the routines by the end of the first week of school. That is a compliment to students, parents, and teachers!

Mother Nature did try to impact us a few weeks ago with the severe storms at the end of the day, canceling all after school activities. Remember, if we need to close for weather or other issues, the teachers will follow the emergency closing directions you wrote on the bottom of the emergency contact paper. If you need to make changes throughout the year, please contact the office as well as the homeroom teacher.

Thank you to all who completed the Volunteer Training either at Back to School Night or last week. We have 622 volunteers on the volunteer database! (Some are duplicated if there are >1 child in the school.) There will only be one more training session, which will occur in November during American Education Week.

Regarding lunch, please make sure you send in the correct amount or have money on your child’s account. Neither the office nor a teacher is allowed to lend money to any child for lunch purchases. Applications for free and reduced lunches are available throughout the school year.

Consistent attendance is so important for student achievement. Therefore unless your child is symptomatic, please send him/her to school. We continue to monitor attendance monthly through the Attendance Committee which is comprised of the administration, guidance, nurse, and pupil personnel worker.

Focused on Quality Committed to Excellence

We welcome Dr. Catherine Allie as the new Zone 2 Assistant Superintendent. Dr. Allie comes to BCPS from Montgomery County. In addition, Mrs. Cathy Thomas is the new assistant to the assistant superintendent.

Please remember not to queue up in line in the parking lot for parent drop off before 9:05. If you arrive prior to 9:05 please park in a parking space. When we have a long line of cars it delays the busses entering the bus loop.

The annual Halloween Parade will occur around the perimeter of the school building on Wednesday, October 31 at 9:45. Children again this year are asked to come to school in costume. Parents may send clothes to change into after the parade. No toy weapons of any kind may be brought to school on this day.

The Dulaney Key Club will collect left over candy immediately after Halloween. Donated candy will be then distributed to various agencies by the members of the Key Club.

School will be closed Friday, October 19 for the state teachers’ conference. In addition, school will be dismissed at 12:50 on Friday, November 2 (end of the first marking period) and will be closed Monday, November 5 (Professional Study Day) and Tuesday, November 6 (Election Day).

Happy autumn,Debbie GlinowieckiNancy Aumiller

Jacksonville Elementary… students-

We Salute You!In remembrance of September 11th, the School Spirit

Committee began a week-long collection of “change” to be donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. Well, you definitely succeeded in your mission! Together with faculty and staff, the

students donated a grand total of $775. Congratulations! And, to all our “little patriots” out there who spent hours tending lemonade stands over the weekend to raise money for WWP. Your sense of duty is admirable!

**Wounded Warrior Project ® (WWP) serves military service members who incurred service-connected wounds, injuries, or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001 and their families.

ATTENTION THIRD- AND FOURTH-GRADE PARENTS

Ever Wondered What It Means To Be A "Picture Parent"???

Picture Parent is an in-classroom supplemental art program created in conjunction with the Baltimore Museum of Art and led by parent volunteers. Parents lead a 10-minute presentation on an artist and then supervise a 20-30 minute hands-on activity. Thank you to all the many parents who have participated in this program throughout the year to help bring art to life for all of the students.

If you love art, you'd make a great Picture Parent too! You do not have to be an artist, or have a degree in teaching or the arts - you just have to LOVE ART! We are in need of several volunteers for a one-day-only commitment for one (or more if you choose) of the grades. To help or learn more, please contact Katie Bellinger at (410) 666-7065 or [email protected].

Get Your Game On –Read Like a Raven!

We are officially half way through the first quarter of the 2012-2013 school year and that means that we have only four and half weeks until the marking period ends. More importantly, that means that students in grades two through five have just over four weeks to read at least two books and to take Accelerated Reading quizzes! Our school-wide goal is to read and succeed with a 90% or greater average on quizzes. Students who achieve that goal will be welcomed into our

90%+ Club!As parents and guardians, you can help at home. Help your child choose the correct book for their reading level. Reading teachers will have this information if your child doesn’t already know. Talk to your child about the book they are reading. Ask them to describe the setting, characters, problem, events, and solution. Once they have finished, make sure they come to school with the book to take a quiz. What's more, you can check their quizzes online through the HomeConnect portion of the Renaissance website. Teachers have sent this information home to all students in grades 2-5.Like the Baltimore Raven’s Football Team, we believe that “Every victory starts within.” And we believe that every Jacksonville Elementary student can be victorious when they read to enjoy, read to learn and read, read, read!!

FALL PICTURE DAYMark your calendars for Wednesday, October 17. Lifetouch will be here to take individual and class pictures. You should have received the flyer listing the various backgrounds and packages and a reminder flyer will be sent home a day or two before the 17th as a reminder. You can
