Dargan Coggeshall is the founder of the Virginia Rivers Defense Fund (www.virginiariversdefensefund.org) and a defendant in the Jackson River trespassing case. He has a BA and MBA from the University of Virginia, and when he is not defending the use of public rivers for the benefit of all the anglers in the Commonwealth, he can be found father-ing three little anglers and running a business in Charlottesville and Chantilly (soon) that helps children with learning disabilities. In his spare time (ha), he likes to pursue trout in the Blue Ridge mountains and on the Jackson, smallies on the James and Shenandoah, shad and stripers on the Rappahannock, and ........ He is contemplating moving to West Virginia where the threat of being sued for using a public river is non-existent.

Letter from the President
Trout and I have this love/hate relationship…I love to catch them and they hate to get caught. However, on several occasions in October, I definitely was on the winning side of the relationship. First, I fished a 3-4 mile private section of the upper Jackson River owned by Bill Bratton, a realtor and native of the area who grew up on this section of the river. Matt Thomas, Fly Fishing Guide and Instructor for the Home-stead Resort, books this stretch of low pressure water. He can be reached at (330) 205-2014. The rod fee is $60.00 per day and the fishing was fantastic. I was the only person fishing this stretch of water the two days I was there. Second, after helping out at the Project Healing Water event on Back Creek, Jay Arm-strong led a FFV club trip to the area. Again, the fishing was super. I think both experiences have taught me the secret to catching a lot of trout in my love/hate relationship…go somewhere the trout have been over-stocked.
Our November dinner will feature Dargan Coggeshall who was sued for trespassing on the lower Jackson River some two years ago. Dargan has some advice for us that we will all want to hear concerning his two-year ordeal with the courts, the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, and our Attorney General. Don’t forget the Annual Banquet is on January 19, 2013. This year Jim Klug of Yellow Dog FlyFishing will present our Annual Banquet program. The entire evening should be fun and entertaining, so mark your calendars now. As usual, we will have a number of valuable raffle prizes as well as silent auction items.
As you will recall, the last Singing Reel had a list of proposed officers for the 2013-2014 term. These indi-viduals were presented at the September dinner meeting. Since there were no nominations from the floor the nominations were closed. Page 5 of this issue of the Singing Reel has a ballot of the 2013-2014 officers. This ballot should be completed and sent to the FFV post office box or brought to the November dinner meeting.
Also, you should have received your FFV 2013 dues request by now.. Please remember to check your con-tact information on the dues form, especially your email address. If you have already paid…thank you! If you haven't paid keep in mind that if you want to continue to be a member of FFV your payment is due by December 1, 2012. Our club By-laws limit our membership to 150 individuals and we have a fairly long waiting list of potential members.
Next year promises to be a banner year for FFV with lots of great trips, knowledgeable speakers, and much more. Get involved and get the most from your membership Tight Lines, Ken Eastwood

The last week afforded good nymphing on Penns Creek near Weikert Pennsyl-vania in Union County. With rain and night time temperatures in the 30s, the creek was in good shape for going below the surface. The trout responded to a number of different nymphs and wet flies. The first photo, as snapped by my fishing partner that week Katherine Wetzel, shows me holding up what was (for me anyways) a trophy brown trout .The second shows the hole in front of my cottage, Windy Inn, where the catch took place. My family has been on this part of the Creek since 1915. The old fishing cabin of Charlie Wetzel, the fly fishing writer, is about half a mile down the creek.

Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing at Back Creek 2012
It was one on those cool crisp fall days in October as all of the participants left their home location to head for Warm Springs in the mountains of western Virginia. The groups began to assemble around 2:30 PM and by 4:30 PM or so, all were present and accounted for at Warm Springs Inn. The Inn is old, dating back to the 1800’s, with even earlier foundations. It had that time worn but charming flavor and opened its doors to a great group of Warriors and Vets. We all assembled on the porches of the Inn where each Warrior and Vet was completely outfitted through the generosity of the Guilford Founda-tion. There were many thank yous and much happiness as gratitude was expressed. Dinner at the Inn followed and all had their fill. Some Vets and Warriors quietly asked for a second desert. Their wish was granted. Ed Nicholson the founder of Project Healing Water spoke to the group and participated in awarding a fly rod to Bob White for being selected as Volunteer of the Year. All returned to their rooms for a good night’s sleep. Wednesday saw a pre-dawn start. The group gathered in the dark for a 6:45 AM wheels up for the twenty mile trip over the mountain to Back Creek. Light was breaking when we all reached the Com-munity Center of Dominion Power Generating Station. Mike Puffenbarger, an Amish gentleman, was waiting with a full breakfast. Almost all grabbed first for the coffee to gain some consciousness. After filling our bellies, we were welcomed by the Station Director, Sean Fridley. We are all impressed and in awe of the support provided by Dominion Power including the stocking of Back Creek with beauti-ful rainbow trout. Phil Johnson and Dan Genest laid out the day’s activities and assigned guides and beats to the Warriors and Vets. A quick ride down to Back Creek and one could then see a myriad of equipment, clothing, rods and reels and all getting suited up for the day’s fishing. Only a short moment after the first fly hit the water a Warrior was playing the first trout of the day, a beautiful colored six-teen inch rainbow trout. Many, many more were landed including several twenty plus inch rainbow. Also present in the stream were bass, sunnies and chubs. A first time female vet flyer fisher landed six-teen trout. The morning also provided all an opportunity to meet with and express thanks to our bene-factors, Roger and Annette Kirby of the Guilford Foundation. It is the generosity of the foundation that provides for outfitting the Warriors and Vets and covering all expenses associated with the trip. They were gracious with their time and spoke with all of the participants.
All took a break at the noon hour. Virginia Outdoors reported on a ceremony that dedicated a monu-ment to Projected Healing Waters. With wounded warriors and veterans clad in fishing waders eagerly eyeing the trout in the steam beside them, Lieutenant Governor Bill Bolling dedicated a monument in their honor at Dominion Virginia Power's Bath County Pumped Storage Station. The monument is a gift from station employees to those who have been injured while serving in the military. It names Back Creek, which flows from power station's lower dam, as the "home waters" for all soldiers and volunteers who visit the creek as part of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing Inc., a national, non-profit organization that provides mental and physical relaxation therapy to injured military personnel through fly fishing. “This is an apt and fitting tribute to those who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States," said Bolling, an avid fly fisherman. “Yet this ceremony is not about dedicating a monu-ment. It is about honoring those who have sacrificed so much for us and our country.” Ed Nicholson, founder of Project Healing Waters Fly Fishing, Phil Johnson, PHW Regional Coordinator, J. David River, Senior Vice President of Dominion Power, and Dan Genest of Dominion Power and Project Healing Waters also participated in the ceremony.

The Fly Fishers of Virginia (FFV)
was established in 1982 to promote the art of fly rod fishing; to foster good sportsmanship; and to promote conservation of the nation’s natural resources.
During the year, six dinner meetings are occasions for informational programs pertaining to the many aspects of fly fishing and conservation activities. Programs are presented by international and local experts and celebrities in the fly fishing world, as well as knowledgeable FFV members.
Fishing trips are scheduled each year for cold water, warm water, and saltwater species.
Educational programs for members and the public, as well as seminars and workshops are scheduled periodically.
Fly tying classes are offered each winter: Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced, depending on demand. Casting clinics are also available.
The club gives financial support to several conservation and fly fishing related organizations, including: James River Association; Wildlife Founda-tion of Virginia and special projects of the VDGIF; The Chesapeake Bay Foundation; Coastal Conservation Association, Project Healing Waters, and The Brotherhood of the Jungle Cock.
