Fort Jackson Commander Brig. Gen. Patrick R. Michaelis hosted a motorcycle safety call at the Post Theater Aug. 6 for 136 motorcy-clists and command teams.
An avid motorcycle rider himself, Michaelis encouraged all to sup-port the Fort Jackson Motorcycle Mentor Program. The MMP oper-ates at the post, brigade, and battalion levels to promote camaraderie and safe, responsible riding.

Say “Department of Defense” and most Americans automati-cally envision uniformed Soldiers, sailors, Marines, airmen or Space Force guardians.
They don’t think of the sinews holding all this together: DOD civilians.
1)")#-ment of Defense civilian workforce … is close to 950,000, and still people don’t seem to know about it,” said Michelle LoweSo-lis, the director of Defense Civilian Personnel Advisory Service. “We’re really and truly one of the biggest civilian employers in the country.”
Your average citizen doesn’t realize that you can come into the Defense Department and not wear a uniform, she said.
) 3www.dodcivilianca-reers.com,'(3Bteam lead said the site is primarily a recruitment tool; the web-site’s purposes were to educate folks about civilian employment
 ,C 3-,)3organization.
The idea began about two years ago, said Desiree Seifert, as-sociate director for employment integration and strategic recruit-ment, at the service. “We knew we needed to be more active in social media,” she said. “We knew we needed to have more of a way of communicating. We really wanted to look at our website as kind of the central hub of that messaging.”
The organization had a website before, but it wasn’t dynamic, Seifert said. “It didn’t let people know who we are or the variety 3+4'1" -)certain groups to say, ‘Hey, come on in and learn about us; here’s why it would be interesting to you.’”
The site is designed to give those working with it different paths to explore. If someone knows they want to work for the Army, for example, the site will give them a pathway there. If they want to work in South Korea, it will show them opportuni-ties there.

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. (0/ -,,-B)Department of Defense in promoting Suicide Preven-tion Month to educate our military community about suicide prevention, resources, and steps to take to protect one another against suicide. Each September, DOD observes Suicide Prevention Month to promote prevention resources across military communities and share ways to take simple action.
This year’s campaign slogan is Connect to Protect. Fort Jackson’s senior leaders, Brig. Gen. Patrick R. / ,,2)'/B' (-ernier, have taken the lead in supporting the slogan of Connect to Protect by signing a Suicide Prevention Month Proclamation.
The proclamation named “September 2021 to be ‘Suicide Prevention Month’ at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.”
“During Suicide Prevention Month, we have the opportunity to make visible our individual and com-munity support of the campaign by taking an active role in connecting to one another and our available resources. Act,” they wrote. “Tell someone or an agency today how important they are to you.”
They asked the community for support during “this very important campaign. ‘Connect to Protect.’”
Let each of us take action and make a difference and Connect to Protect.

There’s also a job exploration tool that allows people to answer a few basic questions about their interests and back-ground and get some tips on where they might start looking. “The site can show them opportuni-ties already aligned with their backgrounds.”

The United States is in an “OK place, but not a great place,” at this point in the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, adding, “I think one of the things that many of us be-lieve – which is a fallacy – is that (CO-VID-19) is going to go away. It’s not going 3-+B :))3-'And the thing about many viruses is they tend to mutate, and they tend to do things that keep them alive.”
One of the things people should feel comfortable with is the Defense Depart-ment medical team has insatiable curiosity, he told the audience, adding that medical research is a continuous process of im-provement.
-ways calls for prevention, followed by di-
agnosis.“We’re interested in taking care of ev-
erybody – service members, family mem-bers, retirees – but the Military Health System exists for the military,” the general said. “That’s our purpose. And so we think about service members and what we can do to keep them healthy. What piece of gear, what piece of anything can we use to prevent anything bad from happening to them?” It can be something infectious such as a cold, or an emerging injury, he noted.
Looking at COVID-19 from a military + ) event, he said. And the COVID-19 vaccine should be considered biological body ar-mor.
However, the general said, “Tens of thousands of Americans die every year ,:+3 ,uniformed services get vaccinated, most Americans actually don’t. That’s a prob-lem for us.”
The reason the United States has such a
suite of good vaccines “isn’t because that magical thinking happened by some manu-facturers in the spring of 2020,” Place said. “This is (research) based on years, in some cases, and more than a decade of research on how to take the vaccination methodol-ogy to a new level.”
There are huge improvements in the way we’re looking at how vaccines work, he said. “And I believe we will get to a place where we’re not talking about COV-ID all the time.” He warned, however, that getting that peace of mind probably won’t happen this year.
“We will get to a place where it’s go-ing to be another infectious disease that we worry about, or we think about — much :+, 43people get vaccinations to ward off diseas-es, Place said. “It’s going to be part of our reality for a long time.”

VaccinesContinued from Page 2
“These vaccines will save lives. Period. They are safe. They are effec-tive. Over 350 million shots have been given in the United States alone. Be-ing vaccinated will enable our service members to stay healthy, to better pro-tect their families, and to ensure that our force is ready to operate anywhere in the world,” Biden said.
The Food and Drug Administra-tion is expected to give full approval to the vaccines, possibly by the end of the month, Kirby said. If that happens, Austin will immediately add the vac-cines to the mandatory military list, Kirby said.
The services have time to plan how
they will implement the program, and they have been working on how they will vaccinate the rest of the active and reserve component. Kirby said there is no shortage of vaccine and the depart-ment does not think this will be a limit-ing factor.
A full third of Austin’s message to the force urged service members not to wait: To get the vaccine right away. “You can consider this memo, not just a warning order to the services, but to the troops themselves,” Kirby said. “We certainly hope that they will take advantage of the opportunity to get the vaccines now that are available now to them on a voluntary basis. That’s ob-viously the potential effect that we’d like to see achieved as a result of the secretary’s message. But if they don’t, eventually we’re going to get to a man-datory sort of regimen and we’ll take care of it then.”

Soldiers from the 3/321 Reserve Training Battalion, South Carolina Na-tional Guard, also received recognition for their support of the exercise. Three Soldiers received Army Achievement Medals while nine Soldiers received coins from the commandant.
The Soldiers of the 3/321 played a number of roles during the exercise to include enemy forces, citizens of the for-eign country, casualties, media reporters and NGO personnel.
“We’re all a team and we cannot make it without one another. So, I want 2 3they’ve done to support the team to get us to this point,” Palmer said.
The newest members of the Chap-lain Corps Regiment are scheduled to graduate in the Post Theater at 3 p.m. on Aug. 19.

National Land Realty is offering 17.35 +/- acres with two
docks and many lakefront opportunities for an asking price
of $445,000. This gently sloping acreage located less than
10 miles from Camden would allow you to build your
own private peaceful lake home retreat on one or the
other portions! With over 690 feet of water frontage on
the Camden side of Lake Wateree (near Shaw Recreation
Area), numerous recreational opportunities such as sailing,
boating and fishing are all possible. This property is perfect
for a family compound or for 2 families that want lake
homes next to each other yet completely private because
of the extra acreage. Easy access to the property with
established roadways and connectable to Cassatt Water
and Lynches River Electric Power in this previously tree-
farmed natural setting. Owner is not willing to subdivide.
Bring any reasonable offers. For more information contact
