Maybe the brewers at Snake RiverBrewing got tired of saying no. They gethit up a lot by organizations, business-es, nonprofits and all sorts of groupsto make a specialty malt just for them.

“We’ve had more people than we cancount come to us as some time oranother,” said Auggie Katzer, a beer repfor SRB. “There are more than 200nonprofits, and it seems like every sin-gle one of them wants a piece of thepie. But we were more than happy todo one for Snow King.”

Snow King Resort’s director of salesand marketing, Jim Goslin, approachedlongtime friend and head brewer CoryBuenning about a one-off festive beerfor Snow King’s upcoming 75th anniver-sary. Before he knew it, Buenningfound himself saying “why not?”

As SRB director of operations ChrisErickson said, “There was just no wayto say no to this one.” So the 75thanniversary commemorative Snow KingPale Ale was born.

SRB had never done a specialty canbefore. They set their graphic designerScott Wood (Studio 6k, Brain Farm) ontask to come up with a cool can whileBuenning got to work figuring out whatto pour in it.

Buenning settled on a pale ale andstarted with a combination of two pop-ular hops from the UK: Challenger andFuggle. He mashed these with theAmerican-grown High Alpha Magnum tocome up with a dry-hopped ale, copperin color, with a moderately bitter bitefor cold skiers.

“It is selling like hot cakes, we canbarely keep it on the store shelves,”Katzer said. “The marketing of the canand the art that’s on it couldn’t be bet-ter for early winter. That skier and thesnowflakes. It’s genius, and a big rea-son for the early success.”

SRB had hoped to sell the ale

through the end of the ski season, upuntil April, but Katzer says it looks likethe award-winning brewery will run thevats dry by February. The limited edi-tion cans are sure to become collec-tor’s items.

Beginning with a single cable tow in1939, Snow King Mountain becameWyoming’s first ski area . The “TownHill” has hosted numerous world-classski events and practice sessions. Each spring it ends the ski seasonwith the World Championship HillClimb, a high-marking racing event forsnowmachiners.

Snake River Brewing has produceddozens of world-class beers and haswon hundreds of national and interna-tional brewing awards.

Will the local brewery ever say “yes”again to a specialty beer? Katzer says,“Maybe.”

“I think we’d be more than happy todo one for Jackson Hole MountainResort,” Katzer said. “Also, the Town ofJackson is turning 100 this spring. We’ve also been interested in doingsomething with Search and Rescue orthe Jenny [Lake] Park Rangers.”

Before order-ing one of its savory pasta, meat orfish entrees, try the house-pulled moz-zarella and smoked pancetta or nibbleon fried olives stuffed with house-madesausage. Exhausted and it’s only 8p.m.? Grab a wood-oven fired pizza to-go; opt for the guido sarducci withmascarpone, button mushrooms,house-made sausage, caramelizedonions and wild arugula.
