The route celebrates many years of Québec classic style cross-country skiing and winter adventure. This one-day event covers wilderness territory that Herman “Jackrabbit” Smith-Johannsen bushwhacked many times between the Laurentian Mountains and Ottawa River. The Jackrabbit Classic is designed as a one-day training and endurance event for experienced long-distance skiers only. It leads up to the two-day Canadian Ski Marathon in February and other long-distance events such as La Traversée des Laurentides and Gatineau Loppet. While the format is similar to the CSM, the sections are much longer, the check points and water points are further apart and there are fewer services. Skiers are expected to be more self- sufficient. The trail starts at Domaine Saint-Bernard in Mont-Tremblant. Skiers can chose the 65 km event or the 103 km event which both end at the Canadian Ski Marathon Saturday finish line at École Saint-Michel in Montebello.

News from the Trail There is a significant change in the trail location due to inaccessibility to certain private lands. The start location has been moved from Domaine St. Bernard in Mont-Tremblant to Arundel on Route 327. We will still distribute bibs and chips to all skiers at Domaine St. Bernard on Friday Jan 19 from 4:00pm to 8:00pm and on Saturday morning Jan 20 from 5:00am to 6:00am. All skiers should still be at Domaine St. Bernard by 5:30am on Saturday. Then we will bus all skiers to the new starting location at no charge. The actual start will occur between 6:30am and 7:15am. There will checkpoints on the trail at Boileau (20km) and the Kenauk Reserve (60km) and water points at 10km, 40km and 80km. Skiers registered for 65km will now finish inside the Kenauk Reserve, then be taken by bus to Montebello at no cost, where they will receive their medals. No private vehicles are permitted in the Reserve. The bus that was planned to take skiers from Boileau back to Mont-Tremblant will now take the skiers who signed up for it from Montebello to Mont-Tremblant. If you want to add this bus to your package, you can still register for it at www.skijackrabbit.ca. If you purchased a bus from Boileau to Montebello, this will be refunded to you. For skiers registered for 103km, you will still finish in Montebello. The overall distance will now be 91.4km. The slightly reduced distance and the slightly delayed start time means that you should finish at approximately the same time as previously planned. The bus from Montebello to Mont-Tremblant on Friday evening remains the same. If spectators are following skiers, there are opportunities to visit them at the Arundel and Boileau checkpoints, but not at in the Kenauk Reserve. If you want to visit them in the Kenauk Reserve, you can park on Côte Angèle near the entrance to the Reserve and join a shuttle bus to the checkpoint.

Changes from Previous Years The two 40 km options are not being offered. The trail has been moved in the Boileau area to avoid skiing on roads. We have introduced chip technology for effortless and more accurate checking in and out of skiers at each check point. Each skier will receive a chip bracelet at the same time as their bib. Wear it anywhere you want. Please be sure to return it at your final check point. It is not disposable and a $60 fee will be charged to the skier if it is not returned. If you leave the event between check points, make sure to go to any check point to return the chip. Live results can be seen at www.zone4.ca.

Driving and Parking Driving directions and a road map to all check points can be found on the web site. For skiers who wish to park a car at the start or finish, parking is available at:

• Mont-Tremblant start - Domaine Saint-Bernard

• Arundel

• Montebello finish – École Saint Michel, 502 Rue Bonsecours. Private cars are not permitted inside the Kenauk Reserve.

The Jackrabbit Trail Detailed maps of the trail can be found on the web site. The exact location of the trail and the distances are subject to minor changes. The trail will be groomed with two tracks for classic style skiing only. It is not designed for skate skiing. Signs indicating the distance along the trail will be placed along the trail.

Bibs and Chip bracelets

Skiers in the 103 km and 65 km events may pick up their bib and chip bracelet at Domaine Saint-Bernard on Friday from 4:00 - 8:00 pm and on Saturday morning between 5:00 - 6:00 am. Friday is preferred to avoid a mad rush on Saturday morning. Bibs cannot be mailed to skiers in advance due to the chip bracelets. Bibs are numbered and colour coded based on which sections the skier is registered for. 103 km = Red, 65 km = Green

Wear the chip bracelet anywhere you want. Skiers must be careful to stay in the track near the start and finish lines at each check point for their chip to be recorded. Chip bracelets must be returned at the skier’s last check point or the skier will be charged a $60 fee. Skiers who leave the event between check points must find a way to deliver their chip to a check point.

Buses

Skiers will be taken by bus on Saturday morning from Domaine St. Bernard to the actual start checkpoint at no cost. 65km skiers will be taken by bus from the finish checkpoint in Kenauk Reserve to Montebello at no cost. Other bus services are available on the registration site for a fee. Only skiers who have pre-registered for a bus can use a bus. Excess capacity is not planned.

Plan A – Friday evening at 6:00 pm sharp from Montebello to all hotels in Mont-Tremblant. Inform the bus driver which hotel you are staying at. Departure is from the finish line at École Saint-Michel, 502 rue Bonsecours. Overnight car parking is available at the school. Plan D - Saturday for 65 km and 103 km skiers from Montebello back to the start at Domaine Saint-Bernard. There will be two buses – one at 4:30 pm and the second at approximately 7:00 pm. It will not leave until the last skier has crossed the finish line. While waiting for the bus to depart, there are warm indoor facilities in École Saint-Michel.

Luggage Transfer

Skiers who paid for luggage transfer should leave their bag at the registration desk at the start at Domaine Saint-Bernard and it will be delivered to the finish at École Saint-Michel in Montebello.

The Start

Pay attention at the Start. The ghost of Herman “Jackrabbit” Smith-Johannsen was seen there last year with his permanent CSM bib 111. Maybe he’ll return this year to cheer you on.

at all times. Risk management must be an integral responsibility of your ski experience, especially on such a long trail. There is good cell service on most (but not all) of the trail. Skiers are strongly encouraged to carry a cell phone and provide their cell number to JRC to assist in emergency contact. Thanks to those skiers who have already provided their number. The number will not be used by JRC for any other purpose or given out to others. In the event of an emergency on the trail, use a cell phone to call 911. 911 officials will inform JRC officials who will decide on the best method to provide assistance. Safety services can be dispatched by JRC officials from all check points. Skiers with a non-urgent problem on the trail can call JRC at (877) 601-9247 for assistance. Skiers with cell phones are encouraged to be good Samaritans and assist other skiers without cell phones. Safety services on the trail and at check points will be provided by Groupe Montagne Explore, the same professional team who provides safety services to the Canadian Ski Marathon.

Skiers who chose to leave the event between check points and arrange for private transportation should inform JRC using the (877) 601-9247 number that they have safely left the trail. Private vehicles cannot enter the Kenauk Reserve to pick up skiers. Remember to return your chip to a check point.

There will be a sweep by snow mobile following the last skier. The Finish

At the Finish at École Saint-Michel in Montebello, there will be a historical exhibit display sponsored by Canadian Ski Hall of Fame Museum and the Laurentian Ski Museum.

Safe Skiing Guidelines If you encounter an injured skier: 1. Bring the skier aid and comfort and try to determine the severity of the injury. 2. If the injury allows the skier to move, move the skier off the track. If the condition makes it

impossible to move them, create a track that will bypass the injured skier. If the skier is on a downhill slope, close the track with branches or ski poles at the top of descent.

3. Make sure that the injured skier is placed in a comfortable position and kept warm. Do not leave the injured skier before the arrival of other skiers or relief.

4. For assistance with first aid, call 911, who will call JRC to coordinate a response. For non-urgent assistance, call JRC at (877) 601-9247.

So that no one remains on the trail: 5. Do not start a section after the closure of the checkpoint. If no JRC staff is at the entrance

of the section DO NOT GO! 6. If you give up between two checkpoints, notify JRC as soon as possible so we know you are

safe - (877) 601-9247. 7. Always stay on the tracks. If you do not see a clearly groomed trail and other skiers, turn

back until you find the trail. IT IS FORBIDDEN TO OPEN THE TRAIL in an unknown area. 8. Always ski with another person or arrange to meet someone at the end of the day so that

no one is left on the trail.

General rules on the trail 9. You have an obligation to share the track with other skiers. Always be courteous and

respectful to make the day enjoyable and safe for all. 10. JRC trails are groomed for “classic” technique only. 11. The dual track allows slower skiers to use the right lane and the fastest skiers, the left. 12. If you stop to rest, eat or wax, step away from the track. 13. If you fall, clear the track as quickly as possible. 14. Children 12 years and under must be accompanied by an adult at all times. 15. No toboggans, pulkas, or dogs are permitted on the trail. 16. Please be polite to any snowmobilers you meet. The JRC uses several kilometers of trails

belonging to snowmobile clubs, who kindly permit us to use their trails for the weekend. Keep in mind that snowmobilers provide important emergency rescue services, assist us at trail intersections and road crossings, and help prepare the trail.

17. Many parts of the trail use private land with the owner’s consent. Please respect their land by staying on the trail and leaving no litter.
