Welcome to my NewsletterI started my month off with a visit to Mid Richmond River and had a great time and great food. I awarded my District Governors Pin & Certificate to two lions and therecipients were Lion Joan Smedley and Lion Shirley Dietz which was well received by the members.

On Saturday 3rd September I was invited to open the Ormeau Fair which I was honoured to do. They had a lot of rain overnight but the Fair went ahead. It wasunusual not to see Boyd Evans at the Fair but I was advised Boyd was resting at an Aged Care Facility after his health scare. I wish Boyd all the best and hope to seehim back at Lions when he is well enough. I stayed on to see the local schools put on some dancing displays and I must congratulate the students and teachers fora wonderful display. I was impressed with the groups so I had photos taken with the winners as well as a photo of all contestants. A big thank you to the judges aswell, with the chairman of judges Shane Weatherby making the announcements. Thank you to President Pauline and members of the Ormeau Lions.

By now Lion John Clark would have advised all clubs that the Lions Awareness Day will be held on Saturday 4th March 2017. This Lions Awareness Day is youropportunity to showcase to your local community what Lions is all about. Make sure you have photos showing what projects you do in your community. The reasonthe date was changed from February to March was to align ourselves to the March to May Membership Drive.

The District Convention at Kingscliff is coming together well. The Convention will be suited to everyone as we will have business as well as fun and fellowship.

Red Faces on the Friday night should be fun and if you are the winning club you will win $500 for your clubs Administration Account.

Saturday night’s Banquet should be a great night. The Theme is a Touch of Red and Masquerade. We have a fabulous band “Seven Deadly Swings” which will get usin the mood for fun fellowship and dancing. Dress for the night is After Five for the ladies and Dinner suit/ Lounge suit for the men.

District visits are going great and again I must thank my Vice District Governors Ann & Kim. We are getting great feedback from clubs visited. Can I ask Clubs whohave an event or special project on that is important to them to contact Greg Nothling with the details so all members of our lions family can see and maybe attend ifit is published in the Newsletter. You must remember this is your Newsletter and it is your opportunity to let other members know what is happening in their neck ofthe woods.

It is on a sad note that one of our family has passed on, Lions Lady Maureen Nothling left us on Saturday 10th September and to Greg andFamily may we pass on our condolences to you. I remember Maureen very well meeting her for the first time at a Cabinet Meeting weekendand also when we visited Rochdale Springwood club and she gave Denise some herbs to grow and one of her beautiful cards which shemade. I must say that I will remember Maureen as a great supporter of this District and she will be sorely missed.

During October and November Denise and I will be representing the District at other District Conventions and we are looking forward tosharing our District with the other Governors.

I want clubs to think about a big party to celebrate the Centennial year and I ask if you have any suggestions to forward them to ourCentennial Co-ordinator PDG Peter Ho. Email: [email protected]

RUNAWAY BAY LIONS CLUB HELPS STAMP OUT MEASLES Runaway Bay Lions Club has accepted the challenge from Bill Gates to help raise US$30 million in the fight against the deadly disease of measles and rubella. Thiscommitment by Runaway Bay Lions Club has seen $1,000 recently donated to the "One Shot, One Life - Lions Measles Initiative"

Lions Clubs International $30 million will be matched dollar for dollar by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation or the U.K. Government's Department of InternationalDevelopment. Each vaccine costs about $1, so every Lions dollar saves a child's life. In fact, every Lions dollar with the matching dollar saves 2 children's lives.Lions have vaccinated almost 600 million children in Africa and Asia. The donation by Runaway Bay Lions Club alone will save 2,000 lives!

Local Lions organise rural villagers to bring their children and babies to the medical centres to receive the life-saving vaccination. Lions Leaders also work with thecountry's health minister and officials to ensure an ongoing immunisation program is implemented for the future benefit of the countries health service and communities.

Beyond Nepal, Kenya, Nigeria and Mali who have all carried out in-country activities for 2016, other potential countries for Lions measles and rubella engagementactivities for 2016 include Botswana, Ethiopia, Madagascar, South Africa and Zambia.

When Lions first became involved in the "One Shot, One Life - Lions Measles Initiative" over 450 people, mostly children under 5 years of age, died every day frommeasles and rubella. Many survivors experienced complications like blindness, hearing loss and brain damage.

With Lions involvement the number of daily deaths has been reduced to 340. It is still too many, but what Lions do works!

CHILDREN OF COURAGEThe Lions Club of Rochedale Springwood held their Children of Couragepresentation at the Yurana Recreation Hall, on Saturday 10th September.

After a rather sad start with the notification of the passing of Lions Lady MaureenNothling proceedings got underway and was chaired by Lion David McKenzie onbehalf of Lion Greg who was responsible for organising the function.

There were five recipients on the day Samuel Thorne, Amelia Thorne, Tallis Munro,Jazmine Hockley, and Samuel Glancy. They were all worthy recipients andcongratulations to them all.

There was even a surprise visit from a Bronco mascot which certainly livened upthe day much to the delight of the children.

Another great presentation and I look forward to hearing from Clubs wishing tohold a Children of Courage presentation in the future never too late.

Lion Christine Forrest District Chairman – Children of Courage

RUNAWAY BAY LIONS CLUB PUTSWIND IN THE SAILS OF SAILABILITYTo mark Lions Club International’s centennial, the Runaway Bay Lions Club signed on to help Lions Australia give away more than $100,000 to over 100 localprojects as part of its Community 100 program. The $100,000 was available in the form of $1000 grants to projects which make a difference to the community in thefields of youth, vision, hunger or the environment.

Runaway Bay Lions Club is one of more than 100 of Australia’s clubs chosen to form ‘Team 100’, which will helped to roll out the grant opportunity locally. Theprogram brought together Lions Clubs in a campaign designed to drive awareness, while also helping to funding new projects in the communities we serve.Runaway Bay Lions Club are pleased to announce that Sailability are the local recipients of a $1,000 grant in support the wonderful community work they do.

Sailability is a true community non-profit organisation whose principal purpose is to facilitate sailing and boating for people of all ages with mental & physicaldisability. They believe in making the impossible happen & with the help of approx. 40-50 volunteers every Tuesday they are able to provide people with disabilitiesthe opportunity to make their dreams of freedom on the water a reality.

Imagine the thrill of sailing for people who can feel & hear but have no sight, or of sailing a boat at speed yet they cannotwalk or where deafness does not matter. The sport of sailing has given added meaning to the words freedom & fun for aperson with diminished capabilities be they physical, intellectual or both. They see 80-100 clients every week come backfrom there sail with the biggest smiles on their faces that only warm your heart.

As a non-profit organisation their only means of attracting funds is by internal fund-raising (raffles/sausage sizzles) & thegenerosity of individuals and Gold Coast businesses.

Runaway Bay Lions Club is pleased to put a little extra wind in the sails of this wonderful community group.

CHRIS AND TAMARI TRAVEL TO NEW ZEALAND Did you know it is now possible to take your Hearing Dog to New Zealand and many other countries throughout the world and bring them back to Australia?

I have just recently travelled to New Zealand for a holiday and was able to take my Lions Hearing Dog, Tamari into New Zealand and back again in Australia. The onlycost I had to pay was for the vet both in Australia and New Zealand. There are no government fees and as long as your hearing dog had met the criteria for a healthcheck there are no quarantine period for the dog.

To do this you will need to contact the Lions Hearing Dog Centre in Adelaide and ask them to contact Hearing Dogs in New Zealand so they can provide accreditationfor your dog while you are in New Zealand.

When you are looking for a flight on the airlines you will need to notify them that you are taking your hearing dog with you and that the dog will be coming on-boardwith you. Qantas, Air New Zealand, Virgin Australia and Jetstar will permit your dog on the plane. Also you will need to ensure that your plane will arrive during thetime that the New Zealand MPI (Ministry of Primary Industries) vet is available to inspect your dog. When I was travelling there, they were only available duringworking hours Monday to Friday. You will need to notify them at least a week before you arrive as they will want to meet you with your dog when you arrive.

You will need to do the following thing to take your dog into New Zealand.

Contact an AQIS accredited vet and ask them to conduct the following: • Get your dog treated for both tick and fleas within 16 days and 48 hours before departure.• Get the relevant paperwork that you need from the website and give it to the vet. • Make sure that your dog has a current microchip and that it is working.• Get your dog tested for Babesia Gibsoni and Heartworm within 16 days prior to the date of departure. • Take your dog to your state Department of AgriculturalCentre the day before the flight to give you a permit to take your dog out of Australia.

It is so much easier to return your hearing dog back to Australia. You will need to contact an MPI approved Vet at least five days prior to departure to organise apermit to return your hearing dog to Australia. You will also need to contact the Australian Department of Agriculture to inform them that you are bringing your dogback into Australia.

Useful websites! Steps in bringing your dogs into New Zealand. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/live-animals/pets/steps-to-importing-cats-and-dogs/New Zealand policy of bringing Assistance dogs into New Zealand. https://www.mpi.govt.nz/importing/live-animals/pets/steps-to-importing-cats-and-dogs/assistance-and-guide-dogs/Australian Department of Agricultural with importing Assistance dogs. http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogs/assistance-dogsAustralia Department of Agricultural policy of bringing dogs into Australia from New Zealand. http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogs/step-by-step-guides/category-1-new-zealandThere are many countries that you can take your hearing dog into. However you will need to check with an organisation in that country to see if Hearing dogsrecognised as an assistance dogs in that country, otherwise they will be treated as a pet. You will need to check what the policy of that country in bringing dogs intothat country and returning back to Australia. http://www.agriculture.gov.au/cats-dogsMake sure you plan well in advance if you wish to travel with your hearing dog! Like 8 months especially if you are going to a country that is known for rabies!

Now back to planning my next adventure with Tamari to South Africa!

LIONS AWARENESS DAY 4 MARCH 2017It is apparent that the Lions Awareness Day has been moved from 4 February 2017 to Saturday 4 March

2017 following full support from the Council and hopefully this would have much better and bigger

exposure of Lionism to the community when a lot of Clubs are promoting their activities on the day.

More information will be released by Zone 4 Chair John Clark who initiated the idea. Please remark your diary.

CENTENNIAL PROMOTIONTo promote our Centenary year, a suggest has been putting forward by PDG Merv Ferguson using

Billboard having a large sign posted in freeway for a number of months. A design from Lion Mark

McCosker is provided herein.

Obviously there are tens of thousands of dollars involved and we looking if there is sponsorship

around to make this happen. Further suggestions are considered such as make sticker patches

for private or public vehicles such as local buses to promote same. I welcome anyone has any

bright idea to move this forward.
