Lipids
Lipids
Also called triglyceridesContain oxygen, hydrogen and carbon.Made of three fatty acids and one glycerol by
condensation reactionHydrophobic due to the long neutral
hydrocarbon chainTwo types of lipids: fats and oils
Fats contain saturated fatty acids, solid at room temp. ex.butter and animal fat. Unsaturated fats present in plants, olive oil, sunflower oil
Saturated fatty acid-no double bonds
Saturated(nodoublebond) and Unsaturated
Ester bonds forms between glycerol and fatty acids
Phospholipids
Made of one glycerol 2fatty acids and a phosphate group.
The fatty acid tails can be saturated of unsaturated
Major constituent of cell membrane
Phosphate head negatively charged, tails neutral
Partly hydrophobic and partly hydrophilic
Functions of lipids
Energy production- twice the energy of content of carbs and pro.
Heat insulation-layer of fat insulate the body against temperature changes.
Storage molecule (fat)-stored without water not adding much body weight. Useful for migration of birds
Shock absorbent-protects organs in the body. Some derivatives acts as hormones (testosterone,
oestrogen) and component of cell membraneProvide buoyancy- aquatic animals floating.Electric insulator in nerve cell (myelin sheet)
