NordMin – developing the Top Mining Region, through top

mining research, development and innovation

The Norwegian Petroleum adventure

- From new beginners to pioneers within 3 decades

- Development driven by extensive efforts on R&D and Innovation

- Today Norwegian companies are technology are marked leaders on subsea exploration and

production

Much to learn on how to organize effective and profitable R&D models.

The single most important factor is – collaboration in an open innovation environment!

(universities – R&D institutes – industry – authoroties)

Both nationally and internationally.

Technology for a better society 9

Value creation and innovation chain

Education Research New

innovation New/establ

industry

The chain is not stronger than the weakest link!

Technology for a better society 10

Innovation takes place in networks, through interaction between different actors ;

Universities <-> research institutes <-> industry <-> society

Innovation and interplay

Problems set and solved in the context of application

Difference between closed innovation and open innovation

Open innovation needs a different mindset and company culture than traditional or closed innovation.

Closed innovation Principles Open innovation Principles

The smart people in our field work for us. Not all the smart people work for us. We need to work with

smart people inside and outside our company.

To profit from research and development (R&D),

we must discover it, develop it and ship it

ourselves.

External R&D can create significant value; internal R&D is

needed to claim some portion of that value.

If we discover it ourselves, we will get it to

market first. We don't have to originate the research to profit from it.

The company that gets an innovation to market

first will win.

Building a better business model is better than getting to

market first.

If we create the most and the best ideas in the

industry, we will win.

If we make the best use of internal and external ideas, we

will win.

We should control our innovation process, so

that our competitors don't profit from our ideas.

We should profit from others' use of our innovation

process, and we should buy others' intellectual property

(IP) whenever it advances our own business model.

Technology for a better society

Why open innovation?

13

The big societal (global) challenges requires the best teams to

interact/work together in an open innovation atmosphere:

- Energy Issues

- Climate Challenge Issues

- Environmental Issues

- Food & Life Science

- Clean Water

- Raw Materials…..

Technology for a better society 14

Technology for a better society 15

The applicability to the minerals sector – the big challenges

and leaps:

• Exploration and exploitation in the high North

• Enironmetal issues (sea & land deposits, water management, footprint, ….)

• New mining concepts (remote operated/controlled, ….)

• ”Make more out of less” – new fragmentation technologies and use of waste materials

• New down-stream processes – e.g. pyro-metallurgy/hydro-metallurgy/el.chem. processes

• Transportation and logistics solutions

• +++

NB: It is important to also focus on increased

processing (to products) in the region – not only

exporting raw materals/concentrates!

I.e. considering a longer part of/the whole value chain!

Technology for a better society

National policies and R&D strategies?

16

Finland has paved the way;

- its minerals strategy in place by 2010

- the Green Mining R&D programme established 2011-2016 (60 mill Euro)

Norway and Sweden;

- minerals strategies around the corner

- R&D programmes; Sweden ok – Norway pending….

Denmark – no, Greenland - yes

Iceland; early in the process….

I.e. not fully synchronized, but everybody realizes that the global Raw Materials issue

actualizes our commercial potentials

Technology for a better society

The power of cooperation – the power of NordMin!

17

The overall objective is to secure a sound knowledge and competence base for

sustainable industrial and societal growth in the High North regions.

This objective will be achieved by:

- further developing and strengthening of the relevant competence base within a cross-

border, regional context by the establishment of NordMin,

- amplifying each nation’s strengths through the establishment of cross-border innovation

mechanisms,

- supporting education and competence-building through joint MSc and PhD educational

programs,

- the creation and execution of R&D programs on a precompetitive level,

- promoting the region as a strong player in relation to the EU and EUs Raw Materials

Strategy, and

- furthering societal, cultural and knowledge-bonding by exchange programs.

Technology for a better society 18

Concluding remarks:

• We strongly beleive in the open innovation mode of working

• In a Nordic/european High North context on raw materials a lot of

joint challenges are relevant to this approach

• The nations complementarity and expertise basis represent an

unique possibility for further innovation (petroleum industry +

metallurgical industry + mining industry)

To the NordMin steering committee (representatives from ministries)

- Please make the organization and governance processes effective/dynamic (as less

bureaucratic as possible)

To the industry

- Stand up behind this initiative; it's intended for you, it allows for more long term research ,

competence building and strengthened innovation and competitiveness

- Bring forward your challenges (its is not all about your money…)

To the society

- Sustainability and environmetal concerns will be paid utmost attention; NordMin will work

for developing the good societies in sparsely populated areas (creating interesting jobs for

both men and women)
