FOREVIORD

The current Directory, like those published in the preceding years, is designed to provide information on all companies, agencies, or individuals who are producing minerals or mineral aggregates in Washington. The names of the concerns and of the mines or other properties are listed, together with addresses, locations, and the mineral.a produced. In most instances the concerns listed are currentl.3' operating; some, however, are inactive but produced as recently as 1947 and reasonably may be expected to resume operation; and a few are in a development stage but expect to produce in the near future. The data used are i'rom the files of the Division of Mines and Geology and have been obtained principally through personal contacts with the operators at their mines, quarries, or places of business.

Sand, gravel, and common crushed-rock operations are omitted in order to economize on time and e:xpense in the preparation of the directory. For details of the addresses of producers of these materials and locations of pits and quarries, reference may be made to the 1947 directory, which was complete in this respect for that year. Any changes since then are so minor that there appears no need to duplicate the 14-page section dealing specifically with sand, gravel, and common stone. A few operations, new since 1947, were mentioned in the 1948 directory and 18 additional ones are included in the current directory in order to bring the 1947 listing up to date.

Every effort has been made to insure the completeness and accuracy of the data included in this directory. However, as changes in status due to reorganization, removals, and altered mining conditions are continually taking place, it will be appreciated if additions and corrections are brought to the attention of the Division.

Sheldon L. Glover, Supervisor Division of :Mines and Geology Olympia, Vlashington

DIRECTORY OF WASHINGTON MINING OPERATI01'5, 1949

By larshall T. Huntting

INrRODUCTION

The companies included in the following lists are arranged for convenience in two categories; i.e., those working on or producing chiefly metallic minerals, and those producing chiefly nonmetallic minerals. The organization names are given in alphabetical order together with the office address and the name and address of an officer or other individual interested in and familiar with the undertaking. Opposite these are: The mineral.a, metals, or aggregates produced, arranged, so far as possible, in order of value; and the location of the mine or mines by county, district, and section. In order to facilitate the use of the Directory three indexes are included& one giving mine, pit, or quarry names in alphabetical order together with the corresponding company names and page references, another; a tabulation of products, with the names of the producers arranged. alphabetically, and the third; a geographical. index listing each county's producers of metallic and nonmetallic minerals in separate sections, each aJ..phabetically arranged.

Abbreviations used:

Ag - silver Au - gold Cu - copper

Fe - iron Sb - antimony Mo - molybdenum W - tungsten Pb - lead Zn - zinc

Underscoring indicates the metal of' principal. economic importance.

Locations by legal land description are given, for example: NE:f sec. 15, (29-37E), indication: Northeast quarter of section 15, township 29 north, range 37 east Willamette meridian.

In the section on nonmetallic mining operations, the sand, gravel, crushed rock, and riprap operations listed are only those which have been recorded since 1947. All such operations of record in 1947 were included. in the directory for that year, and in the interests of econonw of space have not been included in this directory for 1949.
