Abstract

This research aims to study and analyze Jabir bin Abdullah Al-Harashi’s role as a man of the State,

during the period of Sharif Hassan bin Ajlan.

Although the period he spent in this role was short,

i.e. ten years, he contributed a lot in the

reconstruction of Jeddah port, organizing the tax,

both collection and disbursement, and control the

transactions of customs, and business dealings. In

fact, Sharif Hassan gave him broad powers to

achieve the prosperity of Jeddah port. This was

actually one of the most important objectives of the

Sharif of Makkah. This active role, along with the

management and organization of financial issues,

allows the Sharif to depend on Jabir in some

military tasks. The improvements Jeddah port

underwent made it an international port for world trades, including goods from the Far East.

However, there were several issues that led to

conflict and clash between the Sharif and Jabir. As a

result, Jabir was jailed and released several times.

Even though the Sharif forgave Jabir, and even

appointed him in Jeddah port, Jabir economic

activities were not as before. The Sharif appointed

other people to run the port; there arouse several

problems between these people, and Jabir was

accused of supporting one of them, which ended up

with hanging him in816 /1413 .
