- First appearance in 1983 at University of South new Wales, Australia.
- The Concept offered the best potential to reach high efficiency, achieving multiple world records of efficiency reaching 25% (at research level).
- Since then, cell technology has been improved by several players in the industry like Panasonic, Sharp, SunPower, SolarWorld and JA Solar.
- In 2010 JA Solar started R&D for mass production of mono cells, rapidly becoming a world leader in cell conversion efficiency
- In 2010 JA Solar was granted a patent for cell structure and industrial production of mono PERC cells
- In 2013 cell efficiency reached 20,3% for mass production
- In 2014 JA Solar started mass production at large scale becoming the first company in the world to mass produce and commercialize mono PERC structured cells
- In 2016 JA Solar became the world largest p-type PERC monocrystalline cell and module provider, reaching 7GW of total shipments
- In 2016 JA Solar Provided nearly 50% for the first phase (2015) of China’s “Front Runner” PV program, which included 150MW of mono PERC modules. JA was winner of the program.

CHINA’S FRONT RUNNER PROGRAM ROLE IN MONO PERC DEVELOPMENT
- In 2015 China started the initiative “Front Runner Program” to encourage PV technology improvement and accelerate PV industry transformation towards higher efficiency modules
- It mandates a specific amount of solar capacity to be installed each year by only using modules that meet the Front Runner efficiency standards:
-> 2015: 1 GW-> 2016: 5,5 GW-> 2017: 8-10 GW
- For 2015 and 2016 modules had to provide an efficiency of 17,5% for poly and 18% for mono. Minimum output power was 270W for poly and 280W for mono
- For 2017 module had to fulfil the following requirements:

CHINA’S FRONT RUNNER PROGRAM ROLE IN MONO PERC DEVELOPMENT
The result of the third phase of the program reveals the following:
1. Mono-Si PERC accounted for the majority (67%) of all the bid winning projects
2. All P-type mono-si modules adopt PERC. In addition, every 60-cell module's wattage reached 310W, the upper limit in the scoring system.
3. More than 50% of P-type mono-si is predicted to use bifacial technology.

GLOBAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY FORECAST OF MONO PERC
- In March 2018, China released a new regulation for new expanding plan of cell capacity in China. The cell efficiency of multi & mono in new built PV plant has to be greater than 19% & 21% accordingly.
- The global PERC capacity will be boosted by China's new regulation, showing an already ongoing global ramp up towards mono PERC technology

GLOBAL PRODUCTION CAPACITY FORECAST OF MONO PERC
- This year a 22GW capacity upgrade will take place and in the next two years, at least another 20 GW of conventional production lines will be upgraded to mono PERC
- Selective Emiter (SE) technology was introduced this year, boosting cell efficiency up to 0.25%
- Chinese PERC lines need SE upgrades to achieve 310W in high efficiency modules required by the Front Runner program
