SOLUTION

Pippa is a 9 year old Golden Retriever with Arthritis in her elbows and wrists. Her local vet referred her to me for sometreatment to help support the medication she was taking to relieve her symptoms.

PIPPA'S STORY

‘Tim treated our almost 9 year old Retriever Pippa recently.

Poor Pip was in a bad way after a bone infection and ongoing Arthritis. She had trouble walking, would stumble and couldn’t negotiate stairs anymore. She was very sad.

With Tim’s help and strategies, we now have our beautiful girl back again!’ MARY

STRATEGY #1: MASSAGEWhy would I Massage my dog?

Effective way to help keep your dog pain free

and moving well.

A great way to spend quality bonding time

with your four legged friend

Massaging your dog regularly can have a

significant effect on their quality of life and

longevity

What are the benefits of Massaging

my dog?

Reduce pain and stiffness

Improve flexibility and joint mobility

Help maintain muscle tone for dogs and ease

the natural effects of aging

What sort of pressure should I use?

A light pressure initially, especially if your dog

has sore or tight areas

Be aware of your dog’s body language and

reactions as you massage them, and stop if

they are uncomfortable

When would I not massage my dog?

If in doubt always check with your local vet

first

As a general rule, do not massage your dog

within 48 hours of surgery or in the early

and later stages of pregnancy

There might be infection or skin conditions

where massage might not be appropriate,

so always check with your vet first

How often should I massage my dog

and for how long?

We will cover this in our Fast Track Online

Program, as it can vary from dog to dog

M A S S A G E T E C H N I Q U E S BACK LEG REGION

Thumb Pad Pushes

Using just the pad below your thumb, gently stroke down towards your dog’s knee joint

If you are comfortable with this technique, alternate using both hands. This helps build more

flow and rhythm

Notes

Repeat for up to 60 seconds

STRATEGY #2: USING A HEAT PACKWhy would I use a heat pack?

To relieve tightness and soreness

They are simple to use and often give

immediate relief and can be combined with

tools like massage to create a stronger effect

for your dog

What are the benefits of using a heat

pack for my dog?

Reduce pain and discomfort

Improve the mobility of your dog’s joints and

help your dog perform their day to day

activities easier

They can have a calming and soothing effect

which helps your dog to relax

How hot should the heat pack be?

Always err on the cooler side initially, until you

know the level of heat your dog is

comfortable with

Some dogs prefer more heat than others so

watch your dog’s reactions carefully to gauge

the right temperature for them

How long should I keep the heat pack

on my dog for?

This can vary from dog to dog, so be guided

by what your dog is comfortable with

5 to 10 minutes is a good duration, but some

days your dog might be more comfortable

with a shorter time

Pay close attention to your dog whilst the

heat pack is on them

Never leave them unattended

Are there any times I should not use a

heat pack on my dog?

If your dog has an open wound or skin

condition

Not all dogs may enjoy the sensation of a

heat pack on them, so please respect their

wishes, and never force it on them if they

are not comfortable with it

H E A T P A C K T E C H N I Q U E LOWER BACK REGION

Place the heat pack directly on your dog’s lower back

Notes

Find the correct area by feeling for the end of your dog’s rib cage and running your finger

directly upwards to your dog’s spine, to give you your first reference point

Trace your finger up from the front of your dog’s thigh until it reaches your dog’s spine which

give you your second reference point

Place the heat pack approximately half way between the two points

STRATEGY #3: DIET

Good nutrition is a vital part of your dog’s health care. The goal is to feed your dog a diet that

supports their health as much as possible.

Here are 2 quick tips you can use to help enhance your dog’s diet and help reduce the inflammation

associated with Arthritis.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids

Help reduce inflammation and help balance the fats

in your dog’s diet

Good sources of Omega 3’s you can add simply to your

dog’s diet are Sardines and Mackerel. These are often

easily found in your local supermarket

Organ Meat

Is the equivalent of a multi-vitamin for your dog and

can be the most nutrient rich part of their diet

Often found in supermarkets or your local butcher

should be able to supply it for you

Vary the organ meat you feed your dog. Liver,

Kidney and Heart are good sources of organ meat

and can be easily added to your dog bowl

Organ meat should make up no more than 15% of

your dog’s diet and if you are feeding liver, no more

than 10% of your dog’s diet Please remember when you do add something

new to your dog’s diet, we suggest adding just

one thing at a time, and on alternate days

initially to give their bodies time to adjust and

minimise the risk of any possible digestive

upsets initially.

QUICK TIPS

STRATEGY #4: STRENGTH &

What are strength and conditioning exercises?

Exercises that strengthen your dog’s muscles,

to help them build or maintain good muscle

tone

Includes exercises that help improve balance,

co-ordination, flexibility, proprioception and

of course strength

Why are they important for my dog?

A key part of a well-rounded exercise program

for your dog that helps them to develop their

functional strength

Helps them to perform their day to day

activities more efficiently and safely, whilst

reducing the risk of injury

How often should I do these exercises

for my dog?

This will vary depending on your dog’s

current health, age and physical condition.

Please note the duration and amount of

repetitions are just guidelines. Depending

on the health and condition of your dog it

may be appropriate to do less. Our

suggestion would be to perform this

exercise 2 to 3 times a week.

Are these exercises safe for my dog?

Yes, if they are appropriate for your dog’s

age, health and condition

We will discuss more about this in our

Fast Track Online Program, as any exercise

routine always will carry some form of risk

CONDITIONING

S T R E N G T H & C O N D I T I O N I N G Weight Shifting

Place your hands lightly on either side of your dog’s back legs (approximately on the hip region)

Slowly rock your dog side to side, (not to unbalance them) but just to get them to accept a

little more weight on each leg

Notes

A gentle low intensity way to build strength in your dog’s back legs

Aim to do this for up to 30 seconds initially and slowly build up to 1 minute

STRATEGY #5: PUT THEM

Now let’s put all the strategies together to help them be even MORE EFFECTIVE and SAVE YOU TIME.

TIP 1: Massage & Heat Pack together - Place the Heat Pack on your dog’s lower back, then

perform the Massage technique with the Heat Pack on your dog’s back.

TIP 2: Strength & Conditioning exercises – When you finished your regular walk with you dog,

aim to spend between 30 & 60 seconds performing the gentle weight shifting exercise.

Notes

TIP 3: Start with adding just one of the Diet Quick Tips a week and aim to slowly build up

to including both in their diet, if it is appropriate for them.
