If you were to write a letter of apology to your child

what would it say? The following exercise is designed to help bring healing to your

child’s heart by simply saying what you’re

sorry for.Follow the

statement, “I am sorry for…” by writing things

you want your child to know you

are sorry for. Ex: “I am sorry for being too

busy for you at times or not attending events that

were important to you…”

The next section of your letter is what you hope for. So you will follow the following statement with “I hope that…”

Ex: “I hope that you will continue to invite me to your special events, or that we can start over, etc…”

Next your letter will move into one special moment you and your child had together and describe that moment, how you felt and what you enjoyed about it.

Ex: “I remember teaching you to ride your bike for the first

time. I was blessed because you trusted that I would not let you fall. I was so proud when you finally made it down the driveway by yourself. It was one of the joys of my life.”

Finally, end your letter by telling your child what they mean to you. Ex: “I want you to know that you mean the world to me, or how valuable you are to me.”

Now it’s up to you to make sure you get this letter into your child’s hands. If you live with your child, when you see them, hand it to them. If your child lives elsewhere, mail it to them. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Things to Know• Certain life jackets are designed to keep your head above

water and help you remain in a position which permits proper breathing.

• To meet U.S. Coast Guard requirements, a boat must have a U.S. Coast Guard-approved Type I, II, III, or V life jacket for each person aboard. Boats 16 feet and over must have at least one Type IV throwable device as well.

• All states have regulations regarding life jacket wear by children.

• Adult-sized life jackets will not work for children. Special life jackets are available. To work correctly, a life jacket must be worn, fit snugly, and not allow the child’s chin or ears to slip through.

• Life jackets should be tested for wear and buoyancy at least once each year. Waterlogged, faded, or leaky jackets should be discarded.

• Life jackets must be properly stowed.

• A life jacket — especially a snug-fitting flotation coat or deck-suit style — can help you survive in cold water.

How Do Life Jackets Save Lives?• When capsized in rough water.

• When sinking in unexpectedly heavy sea conditions.

• When thrown from the boat as a result of a collision.

• When injured by rocks or submerged objects.

• When unconscious from carbon monoxide fumes.

• When tossed into freezing water.

• When thrown off balance while fishing.

• When unable to swim because of heavy or waterlogged clothing.

BOATING SAFETY TIPSLife Jacket Wear Can Save LIVES!

All recreational boats must carry one wearable lifejacket (Type I, II, III or Type V lifejacket) for each person aboard. A Type V lifejacket provides performance of either a Type I, II, or III lifejacket (as marked on its label) and must be used according to the label requirements. Any boat 16ft and longer (except canoes and kayaks) must also carry one throwable lifejacket (Type IV lifejacket).

Lifejackets must be• Coast Guard approved,

• in good and serviceable condition, and

• the appropriate size for the intended user.

Accessibility• Wearable lifejackets must be readily accessible.

• You must be able to put them on in a reasonable amount of time in an emergency (vessel sinking, on fire, etc.).

• They should not be stowed in plastic bags, in locked or closed compartments or have other gear stowed on top of them.

• The best lifejacket is the one you will wear.

• Though not required, a lifejacket should be worn at all times when the vessel is underway. A wearable lifejacket can save your life, but only if you wear it.

• Throwable devices must be immediately available for use.

Who must wear a life jacket on Michigan waters?• Children less than 6 years of age must wear a Type I or Type

II life jacket when riding in the open deck area of a boat.

• Each person 12 years of age or older operating, riding on or being towed behind a personal watercraft (jet ski) must wear a Type I, Type II or Type III life jacket (that is not an inflatable device).

• Each person less than 12 years of age riding or being towed behind a personal watercraft (Jet Ski) must wear a Type I or Type II life jacket.

(African-American Music Appreciation Month)

— By Ashley G. Terrell

I f you didn’t know, this month is National Black Music

Month or as some call it African-American Music Appreciation Month in which all music by black Americans is celebrated.

June has been recognized and celebrated as Black Music Month since 1979 when then U.S. President Jimmy Carter designated the month as Black Music Month at the urging of Black Music Association founders, Ken Gamble and Ed Wright. Although it was not until June 2000 that the United States government officially recognized Black Music Month after the African American Music Bill (House Resolution 509) was passed.

On May 31, 2011, President Barack Obama declared it as African-American Music Appreciation Month and asked that all of the United States observe this month by being a part of “appropriate” activities and programs that will raise awareness and foster appreciation of music which is composed, arranged, or performed by African- Americans.

Legendary music producer and one-half of the songwriting duo Gamble & Huff, Kenny Gamble has defined the 1970s soul era that became known as the “Philadelphia sound.” He has worked alongside artists like The O’Jays, Teddy Pendergrass, Lou Rawls and Patti LaBelle.

Since his humble beginnings at 17, after working as a radio DJ and having a brief recording career, music served as an creative outlet for Gamble.

The creative craft he has mastered and a distinctive sound of graceful strings and baselines have set apart the music from rivals like MoTown and Berry Gordy. Their first top five single was “Expressing To Your Heart” by The Soul Survivors and from then on they wrote successful singles like “I’m Gonna Make You Love Me” by Dee Dee Warwick (covered by The Supremes and The Temptations), “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” by Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes and “Enjoy Yourself” by The Jacksons.

In a 2006 interview with BBC Radio Four, the inspiration behind the Grammy award winning single “Me & Mrs. Jones” by Billy Paul, was from witnessing a friend who appeared to be in an affair at a cafe they visited frequently.

A collaboration with their artists MFSB and Bobby Martin resulted in the 1974 single “TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia)” culturally known as the theme to Soul Train. It was the first disco record to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100.

During his 50 year career, he has produced and written over 3,000 songs and earned 170 gold and platinum records. His

contributions and impact on the music industry placed him and Huff amongst respected writing duos like Lennon/McCartney, Rodgers/Hammerstein and Carole King/Gerry Goffin. In 1990, they received a Grammy award for Best R&B Song for Simply Red’s cover of “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” and honored in 1999 with a Grammy Trustees Award. They were inducted into the Dance Music Hall of Fame (2005) and Rock & Roll Hall of Fame (2008) and named BMI Icons at the 57th Annual BMI Pop Awards where they collected 86 pop and R&B awards.

Today, Gamble continues to create music and uses his status to bring new life to communities throughout the nation with his “Clean up the Ghetto” projects and the opening of restaurants, low-income housing, schools and mosques through his companies.

WORD UP June 201210

By Bob Johnson

Funded by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), one purpose of Saginaw MAX System of Care is to promote the full participation of youth with complex mental health needs and their families in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of Saginaw MAX.

There are 11 guiding principles which are the driving

force in decisions made at every level and in every aspect of the system. Throughout the year a Saginaw MAX team member will discuss one of these values and how it coincides with their role. The focus of the article last month was “family driven.”

The second principle critical to the success of Saginaw MAX is “Youth Guided.” Youth Guided means that young people will

be empowered, educated and given a decision making role in the care of their own lives as well as the policies and practices governing care for all youth in Saginaw County. Saginaw MAX Youth Coordinator Willie Hillman says it is his job to ensure that there are diverse youth voices present at the table where decisions are being made involving system transformation.

Hillman, who holds a Bachelors of Arts in Criminal Justice, joined the Saginaw MAX team in December.

“Youth voice is essential to transforming the mental health system. It is also a critical component in other systems providing service to youth who have complex behavioral, emotional or social impairments to ensure better outcomes for children, families and the community,” Hillman said.

He prepares youth to be able to tell their stories by providing them with leadership trainings and supportive resources.

“The youth will participate in leadership development, webinars and one-on-one coaching as well as receive information and education about System of Care values, principles, and practices,” said Hillman.

“We have powerful potential in our youth. My goal is to create equal partnership between youth and systems so that we may direct their power toward good ends,” Hillman said.

For more information about Saginaw MAX System of Care contact Director Wardene B. Talley by email at [email protected].

Who you buy from is just asimportant as what you buy!

Some people enter this world with a life of what may be called privilege. Perhaps their family’s riches afford them

an opportunity to attend the best schools and get access to the best that money can buy. They have what most desire. They vacation where most can only dream about going. We have all thought about what life would be like had we been afforded a life of privilege. That lifestyle is only afforded to a select few. There is, however, a type of privilege that far outweighs money and good fortune. When a boy enters this world and gets the benefit of a loving male mentor or role model he is

better positioned for personal and professional success. A loving mentor can do more for a boy’s psyche and development than all the money in the world.

Consider some biblical examples. Lot had a concerned uncle named Abraham. Joshua modeled leadership after the excellent example of Moses. Elisha had a mentor named Elijah. Solomon’s dad (David) prepared him to successfully lead a kingdom and build a temple. Timothy and Titus were instructed by Paul in how to effectively serve in the ministry. No matter what successes these individuals enjoyed, they could not deny the influence of men who were relatives, teachers or mentors that contributed to their effectiveness. With that said, boys learn to develop as men when they see REAL men. Boys develop better personally and professionally when they are influenced by LOVING men who have no other agenda than to see those boys assume the reins of responsible manhood.

As Father Day approaches, let’s do two things that will include every man in the sentiments of this article. For those men who have served as a Moses, Elijah, David, or Paul, please applaud their great efforts. They should not be overlooked for their positive roles in the lives of others. For those men who do not recognize the value of mentoring young boys, please encourage them to read their Bible to see that REAL men can help boys to become MEN! The difference might be between jail and Yale.

WORD UP June 201214

When gospel radio announcer Vicki Hill (known as “The Gospel Lady”) arrived to WTLZ-107.1 FM in 1994 (KISS 107.l FM), luck and promise was in her future and she didn’t realize it.

The Harbor, Michigan native grew up with a musical observing her mother sing for a female group had a profound affect that influenced her to sing for choirs over the years. Before she provided quality gospel music to the City of Saginaw, WTLZ 107.1 FM brought memorable moments in her childhood home.

“I remember lying in my mother’s living room and we had the big tall speakers and I remember gospel at the time was with Chris Banks,” Hill said. “It stayed on from six in the morning ‘til six in the evening. So if I didn’t go to church, I’d spend all day lying in the floor with the big speakers up to my ear, listening to song after song after song.”

Everything came full circle when she was approached by radio announcer Dante Toussaint, who was in need of a fresh new voice for a commercial and Hill would fit perfectly. At the time she was working for a credit union and as a church secretary. It was an entirely new venture for her that she was nervous to do but was willing to try. She was a natural.

“They saw something and they heard something in me that I had not seen or heard,” Hill said.

With this new platform, she was able to reach and connect with an audience through the power of gospel music. She enlightened those with her wisdom, inspirational tales and love, but for her, it’s more than just playing a song. To have people confide in her so openly is a matter she takes to heart; and to be able to provide hope and courage to those in

need, while giving them a voice to speak of their joys and troubles.

“I give the best that I can. I don’t mind helping in whatever way I can. You just never know if that person is sitting on the edge and that’s what always stays in my mind,” she said.

Her contributions to the community have been endless and she is always willing to go an extra mile to bring awareness to special causes. She participated in First Ward Community Center’s 80th Anniversary, along with other organizations during a Radio-thon in May 2012. Last year, Hill hosted a benefit concert to raise funds for 10 year-old Sabrina Nettles who was born with a condition where her heart intertwined with her intestines. The donations went towards medical bills, clothing, medicine and a car for Nettles’ mother to transport Sabrina to the U of M Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The biggest recognition she humbly received in her career were the nominations for “Gospel Announcer of The Year” at the Stellar Awards in Nashville, Tennessee in 2010 and 2011. Though being nominated was an honor enough along with being surrounded by successful gospel talents, one award that truly defined and recognized her love of changing lives and took her by surprise was The Reach Award. This Award is given to those who are able to reach people through the airwaves with music and motivational words, and Hill does just that.

“[Bishop Hobbs] all at once said ‘this Stellar REACH award is going to Vicki Hill out of Saginaw, Michigan,’ and I began to shake and tears started to fall,” she said. “I went on stage to accept that award, gave a little speech and as I began to step down a mob came rushing at me with cameras and recorders. It was amazing!”

During the 18 years since she has graced radio, she has given back to others and has been blessed in return. Hill gives her listeners a piece of strength to take away from her show.

“I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me,” Hill said.

Saginaw County Chapter naaCp uniteS Community for

tribute to trayvon martinBy Ashley G. Terrell

A town meeting entitled, “The

4-1-1: An Issue of Justice: A Tribute to Trayvon Martin.” held on May 3rd served as an opportunity to promote unity, change and racial acceptance within the Saginaw community but most of all to think.

A powerful moment was the tribute to slain Florida teen Trayvon Martin presented by Judge Terry Clark of the Saginaw County 70th District Court. The tribute included a small group of male teens in hoodies; Justin Fabin of Carrollton High School, Anthony McGregor of Heritage High School and Adam Richardson, Darrel Martin and Jordan Drake of the Saginaw Arts & Sciences Academy (SASA). As each one stepped forward and removed their hoods, they revealed their academic accomplishments, goals, and positive aspects of their character. This demonstrated the negative outcome of making assumptions which cost Trayvon his life.

There was an informative panel consisting of subjects such as Michigan Self-Defense Law - ACT 309 of 2006 in comparison to Florida, police responsibility and community safety.

Arthur O’Neal, security director for the Saginaw Public Schools spoke of the recurrence of carrying guns, the appearance of many young men and how it affects them.

“Every morning I’m at the front door of Saginaw High and things that I tell our gentlemen are, pull up your pants and take your hat off,’” O’Neal said. “Our job here is to make sure that we prepare you for the future. You can’t walk around with your pants sagging, acting sloppy; we want you to be professional. Once you leave us you’re on your own. What we try to do is prepare them so they don’t become another target.”

Judge M.T. Thompson, of the Saginaw County 70th District Court, established a program in 2010 called “Project Future” to initiate a positive impact in the lives of young people. With a group of 300 youths (150 boys and 150 girls), the four month

self-improving programs, includes classes like “How To Be A Lady,” and field trips to experience an array of events such as the Pistons basketball game and museums. The three components credited to the success are character training, role models and positive influences.

“In 2010 before we did it here [in Saginaw], we asked Delta College to put a team together, give us a pre-test, a post-test, and give us a written outcome report to show us whether or not this works. And it did,” Thompson said.

The success in Saginaw resulted in a strong demand of bringing the program to the city of Pontiac due to the increase violence and high risk youth. With the same tests applied to the new group of youth – it displayed that with those three components, innovative programs and parental involvement made a difference.

“If you take a loving, caring adult and give them the right tools to work with and put them in the life of a child, it could change the direction of that child’s life.”

Other panelists were Judge Darnell Jackson, Pastor Larry Camel, officer Reggie Williams, and former Police Chief Brian Booker.

This event was sponsored by the Saginaw NAACP Youth Council, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Saginaw Alumnae Chapter and the Great Lakes Bay Bridge Center for Racial Harmony.

June 2012 WORD UP 21

The Great Saginaw Fire of 1893 has all the elements of a riveting mystery. The puzzle of how the fire started along with the drama of how it was finally contained, are just a few of the compelling stories that will be explored in a new exhibit opening at the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History.

Project 1893: Unearthing Saginaw’s Great Fire opened Sunday, May 20th – the anniversary of when the fire began one afternoon on

Ojibway Island 119 years ago. With photos, newspaper accounts and other artifacts, visitors will see firsthand just how ferocious this fire was, how quickly it spread and how firemen and many others worked tirelessly to ensure it did not destroy the entire city.

In addition, this exhibit tells the story of one family whose home was burned in the fire. Through an archaeological excavation performed at the site of the home, visitors will see items that were destroyed in the fire and until now have not seen the light of day. These everyday objects provide an intimate glimpse into what life was like in Saginaw in the late 1800s.

The Museum showcases one of its most prized artifacts – an 1850s, horse-drawn fire pumper which may have been used to battle the Fire of 1893.

Blockbuster exhibit Highlights Great saginaw Fire of 1893Now Open at the Castle Museum of Saginaw County

This exhibit will be on display at the Castle Museum through September 29, 2012. Bring the entire family to see the story of one of Saginaw’s most tragic events and how the city and its citizens came together to rebuild.

The Historical Society of Saginaw County is committed to serving the community by telling the continuing story of the people of the Saginaw region through exploration, preservation, and presentation of their historic and cultural heritage.

For more information, please contact the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History, 500 Federal Avenue, Saginaw, MI 48607, (989) 752-2861, www.castlemuseum.org.

Molina Healthcare of Michigan recently recognized six individuals for their community work at its sixth annual Community Champions Awards event, including Pastor Rufus Bradley Sr. from Saginaw, who was nominated by Health Delivery, Inc. The ceremony, which was held at the Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries banquet facility in Detroit, also included entertainment provided by the Cass Technical High School Vocal Jazz Ensemble as well as an art showcase from Stone

Elementary School students in Saginaw.

This year’s winners were celebrated for their extraordinary efforts to better their communities. Pastor Rufus Bradley, Sr., was no exception. He received the 2012 Community Champions Advocacy

and Civic Leader Award for his work through Mission In The City. Pastor Bradley is the CEO and founder of Mission In the City, the nonprofit organization of New Life Baptist Church Ministries. The purpose of the organization is to help improve the lives of those in need throughout Saginaw County. Mission In The City provides a community recovery program, needs program, health clinic, garden as well as a sports and fitness park. Under Pastor Bradley’s leadership, Mission In the City’s annual summer youth program averaged about 55 youngsters every day last summer and over 70 people volunteered to assist with the kids. Mission In The City has also helped support other community organization’s initiatives, such as Health Delivery Inc.’s Back to School Health Round Up Fair.

“We are inspired by Pastor Bradley’s work in Saginaw through Mission In the City, “said Craig Bass, president of Molina Healthcare of Michigan. “What he and his organization do for the community is outstanding and we’re happy to be able to support their worthy endeavors.”

Established to honor the memory of Dr. Molina, the Molina Healthcare Community Champions award program spotlights the good deeds of everyday heroes in their communities. Molina has been hosting the Community Champions Awards for six years in multiple states. At this sixth annual event in Michigan, the winners were nominated by community-based organizations and also received $1000 grants to give to deserving nonprofit organizations as part of their award. Pastor Bradley designated his grant to Mission In the City.
