New to the community? Come and meet your

neighbors, enjoy some light snacks at the

Welcome Club Social! This is a BYOB event.

3

Welcome to The Neighborhood!

Standing six feet apart and looking at someone wearing a mask does not feel

Welcoming but we’re trying! The Welcome Club has been struggling as much as

everyone else during this covid crisis. Information about new residents has been hard

to come by so we’ve had to get creative in order to even let new residents know our

Club exists. And then the Club House has not been open to host meetings so we got

creative and went all techie. We tried a Facebook event and a Google Meeting. We are

trying. I think we reached some people. But certainly not all.

July is here and we would like to try something NEW. We don’t normally have a July

meeting because residents are often on vacation but I suspect many vacations have

been interrupted. We are going to host our FIRST EVER July Welcome Social! Face-to-

Face! In the Ballroom! With Masks! Will you join me?

This meeting will be Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30 p.m. and is open to all residents –

regardless of how long you have lived here. Whether you are here 8 weeks or 8 years,

come say hello to your neighbors. No food or drinks (remember we are going to have

masks on and that will just be messy). We will however be able to answer your

questions about things you need to know as you move in and you will meet other

people in the same boat. And long-time residents can share their expertise in services

available in the area and challenges they faced moving in.

At the time of writing this article, I do not know if we are going to require signing up

prior to the event. Currently there are restrictions on numbers in the Clubhouse. We

are working with the operations staff to figure out the best path forward. If you have

questions you can contact the Welcome Committee at 615-499-6114 and we will do our

best to answer your questions. Look for further details on Jerry’s List or Blasts from the

Clubhouse.

Hope to see you on Tuesday, July 21st at 6:30 p.m. -Jean Morgan, President

STEPHANIE ACKLEY TAYLOR, LCAM Assistant Community Manager

Hello Del Webbers!

I hope everyone is keeping safe and well during these still crazy times. I trust that

many of you are getting out in the sunshine these days to get some exercise.

There sure are some cool things to look in Florida while walking outside. Two

months ago I did a quick article on the Sandhill Cranes that we always see around

the community. This month I would like to focus on our more well known Florida

friends….Alligators and Crocodiles! Did you know that the Florida Everglades is the only place on earth

where Alligators and Crocodiles exist naturally in the wild together? Fun Fact!

So how can you tell the difference between the two? Alligators, while definitely still dangerous to get

up close to, are relatively timid compared to crocodiles. Crocodiles, on the other hand, are much

more ill-tempered even when unprovoked. Australian saltwater crocodiles are generally considered

the most dangerous in the world, followed by Nile crocodiles! Good thing we don’t live in Australia or

near the Nile River!

Alligators have a distinct U-shaped short and wide snout, while crocs have longer, thinner, almost V-

shaped faces. If you were brave enough to get up close (please don’t try!) you would notice that when

their mouth is closed you can usually only see an alligator’s top teeth, while with the crocodile, their

teeth interlace with each other, causing a much toothier grin.

Both can run on land about 8mph, so outrunning these guys shouldn’t be too hard….they teach kids in

elementary school in Florida to always run in zig-zags if trying to out run an alligator….I hope this never

has to be put into practice!

If you are lucky you might get a glimpse of one of these ancient animals around the community near

the lakes and ponds. They will pretty much mind their own business, as long as you do too. Never ap

proach one obviously, but the are pretty cool to look at from a distance!

Have a great July, Del Webb!

HOA Update with Chris Cleveland, LCAM Community Manager

Remember to Like & Follow us on

Dear Homeowners,

With the Del Webb Orlando Turnover and Election date approaching

quickly I thought I would recap some of the important information

that was recently given out and what is to come:

Our Turnover and Election date is August 18, 2020. Voting will be

done Electronically or by mail in vote. If you would like to sign up for the electron-ic voting option you will need to fill out the Opt-In Form for Electronic Voting. This form was already mailed out to all homeowners, but you can also obtain it on the Del Webb Orlando website. Please remember that each home is limited to one (1) vote, so please sign up for electronic voting with the email address that will be used for your household. If you are going to vote by mail in ballot, those will be mailed out to you in the second notice, which will be going out on August 4th. Please remember you can only use one option to vote…either electronically or by mail in ballot.

We will be hosting a Community Manager’s Update in early July to give more in-formation on the election process. Please be on the look out for an eblast coming soon with the specifics.

Have a great month.

Lots of things in the works this month We’re working on having a few surprises in the community this

month.

Considering the rule of masks and safe distance of course,

I’m sure there will be a few of you out there that will

really enjoy some of the things that are to come.

Although, we are in a time where there are limitations to the things we can do

here, I wanted to take a moment and let the community know that I always wel-

come suggestions to events or activities that we can share as a community. Feel

free to email me with any recommendations you may have so we can add it to

our, “Del Webb of Fun Arsenal “.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we’re getting to that time in the year when its getting seri-

ously hot out there . Upon that statement, I’d like to ask that everyone out there

to please stay HYDRATED. LOVE LIFE & HAVE FUN!

MEET THE TEAM

Hello Del Webbers! My name is Maggie, I am new to the resi-

dent services team and very excited to meet all of you. To give

you a little information about me, I am from Pickerington,

Ohio (20 minutes southeast of Columbus) and I recently gradu-

ated from Bowling Green State University where I studied

Tourism, Leisure, and Event Planning and became a sister of

Alpha Xi Delta. My background is in Hotels and I previously

worked as a concierge at Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort and

Spa. I love Disney and know a lot about the parks and resorts

if anyone needs tips or help navigating Disney’s phone app or

website. I enjoy all kinds of crafting from painting to sewing,

as well as music and I have also danced for 10 years. I have a

kitty named Ziggy, and I love to show pictures of him to every-

one. I look forward to seeing you all around the club house!

BRENDA

MAGGIE

Hello residents of Del Webb. Allow me to introduce

myself my name is Brenda. I recently started to work

in the club house. I am originally from California. I

moved to Florida in 2013 right after I graduated, and I

have been living in Florida since. I have three daugh-

ters who I love so much Emrys, Emerald, Emeline. My

past time hobbies are gardening and art. I am current-

ly working on growing my own herbs and vegetables

and an avocado tree. I love animals if I could own all I

would I think this explains why I own 4 dogs. I enjoy

the outdoors the sound of the birds, crickets, wind

blowing and the view. Before I transferred to Del

Webb I worked as a receptionist in a different com-

munity also managed by First Service Residential in

Orlando. I look forward to the club house opening

back up to get to know you all. See you soon!

G o o d b y e f r o m A l e x i s Wow, Del Webb, how the time has both crawled and flown over these last few years! In the time I’ve been here the communi-

ty has grown and changed so much. I came here and started my first day on October 3rd, 2016 and haven’t looked back since.

Most of you know and are familiar with me and I know most of you by face or by name. There are a lot of you I definitely

won’t be forgetting any time soon (for better or for worse, haha!). I’m on my way to Chicago and leaving Florida for the first

time in my life to live somewhere new. It’s quite literally an adventure for me considering I’ve never even been to that city

before! Woo! I’m sad I won’t get to say goodbye to most of you in person due to the Covid-19 pandemic, so I’m glad I can at

least leave this message behind.

Del Webb is really where I’ve bloomed into the person I am today. I’ve gotten to meet many people of different backgrounds,

try so many new things, and gain valuable experience for future jobs. I graduated with my Associates Degree while I was here

and I’m in the middle of my Bachelor’s. I won’t quite make it to my 4th anniversary here, but that’s alright.

Thank you so much to everyone here. Every experience I’ve had (both good and bad) has changed me just a little bit into the

person I am today. I have plenty of stories to tell in the future! I hope everyone here stays safe and healthy, and remembers

me when they come to the front desk. Please treat my coworkers well because I’ve seen the staff change and grow over the

years too and I genuinely believe this is one of our strongest teams yet! Good changes and good times are coming. I hope you

all ride the wave and enjoy it while you do!

I’m going to have a silly little FAQ below this because I know a lot of people have questions that I haven’t been able to answer

in person. Before I do that, though, I specifically want to say a VERY BIG THANK YOU to three people in particular.

There have been many people I’ve grown to love and adore, and I hope you guys know who you are. But there were three peo-

ple who helped me on possibly the hardest day of my entire life at Del Webb. I’ll never forget that kindness even if it may seem

like a small thing in comparison. I hope to put that same energy and good will forward into the future and help others. So from

the bottom of my heart, thank you to both Dick and Terry Grosek, and to Dan Sandore!

Now for the quick FAQ!

Q: You’re still here? I thought you left with Annalise!

A: I will be! Annalise left the company a little bit before me due to various circumstances. My last day is June 11th!

Q: Have you ever lived anywhere else? Have you ever been to Chicago?

A: No and nope! I’m a native Floridian and have lived here my entire life. I’ve never set foot in Illinois. This is a big adventure

for me!

Q: Are you aware how cold it gets there?

A: Yes, I’m aware and I’m excited to experience it! I’ve had my fill of Florida summers, haha!

Q: Where will you be living?

A: I’ll be living northside of Chicago in Andersonville!

Q: Will you miss this place?

A: I’ll miss the people more than anything. I’ve made a lot of good friends here.

Q: Got any juicy stories about Del Webb?

A: I have PLENTY of stories ;)

Goodbye and farewell, Del Webb!

With love,

Alexis Cressey

Great Lakes Club Hope all our club members are staying well and active during this time of “Social Distancing.” While we cannot get together now, we look forward to resuming our activities as soon as the quarantine is over. Exciting things to come in the future. Some of the activities we are working on are Tavern Opa Greek Restaurant, RP Funding Center concerts, Theatre Winter Haven & dinner, and some Pop-up events. Stay healthy!

Tri-State Club

All June Tri-State events have been either cancelled or postponed. The club will inform its

members of the status of future events as we get closer to the event. The Event coordinators will attempt to

reschedule as our society and economy begin to reopen. To all our members, DWO residents and theirs

families please stay safe and healthy.

As of this writing the Cirque coordinator is trying to get a full refund for the show, which was scheduled for

June 5th, but cancelled. They are currently processing refunds with a skeleton staff. As soon as we receive the refund we will pass it along to our members that paid to

attend the performance.

2020 planned events are listed, but remember you must join the Tri-State club to participate (No Dues and

you will receive email notifications of future events).

July. Pizza Pool Party. Jim Setaro August. Mangos Tropical Cafe. Barbara Lang and Edi Gerber October. Universal Harbor Nights. Mimi Mika Beach Getaway. Pete Piantanida December. Southern Dunes Brunch. Pat Tergesen Clubhouse " pot luck" brunch. Marlene Roth / Edi Gerber ** February 2021. Silver Spurs Rodeo. IIona Johnson Months yet to be assigned: Winter Park by train. Marlene Roth and Shelly Lacelle Rays / Yankees Skybox. Pete Piantanida Top Golf. Sue Wiseman

** In partnership with the Shalom Club

Impromptu events can always be added (and they

are) ,but you must be a Tri-State member to receive Email event reminders. Please remember, if you wish to

participate in any Tri-State events you must be a member of the club, fortunately, that's very easy.

Once in the Tri-State page, just join. (NO DUES) and any DWO resident, regardless, of where they lived is eligible to join. Equally important to membership are

the coordinator volunteers. They make the club what it is!

We are always seeking new event ideas and folks to

coordinate them. This might be of particular interest to our working residents and snowbirds. If you volunteer to coordinate an event you get to pick the event and date

of the group outing. The Tri- State officers will be happy to assist you when you coordinate an event. Remember, the dynamics and success of our club is

directly attributable to our terrific members Please note, that being a trip coordinator is not as

difficult as you might think. The club officers will help with portal setup, payment methods and general

advertising of the event. Your task is essentially, to work out a date / time for the event, and if possible try

to secure a group discount. Most venues are very receptive to having 30 - 50 people visit their

establishment. Remember, events don't only have to be dinner or shows, anything where a group of people can

get together and have fun will probably work. If you have any questions or events you would be

interested in (and willing to coordinate) please contact any of our officers.

Vets4Vets The Vets4Vets Club meets the first Monday of the month, unless it is a holiday and then it is the second Monday. All Vets are welcome to join the club and we also welcome those from foreign nations. Additionally, anyone who wants to join the club can and we have several members with children that our in the service. The Vets4Vets Club performs both social and community services. For example, this month will be awarding a 1000 dollar scholarship to an Auburndale HS NROTC senior and she will be using this money for nursing school. On Memorial Day, we have a rememberance celebration for relatives who served in the armed forces. More details to follow on that as soon as we “open up.” Social acivities include trips to various military museums; a Vet’s social for all Vets and Club members twice a year; Bocce Tournament in October; and the Patriot’s Ball in November. if you are a Vet but do not wish to join the club, you can still have your name placed on our plaque in the Lobby. Contact Frank Communale at 201-286-1780 for information. I hope everyone is safe and the next Vets Meeting (if open) is the 4th of May at 7 PM in the front half of the Ballroom. Please contact Bill Spencer at 540-717-0195 if you have any questions.

Wandering Webbers (Article Continues on pg 17) Wandering Webbers will meet again on Tuesday, August 4th at 4:00 pm. We look forward to being able to meet and talk again about the exciting destinations being offered and being able to travel again when it is safe. We would also like to extend our thanks to Dr. Joe Braun and Dr. Rich Schiappacasse for keeping the entire community informed during the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, most of the trips that have been planned for 2020 since the pandemic began have either been cancelled or postponed. Cancelled trips include our trip to Savannah and Charleston, the Avalon Waterways tour, the Pacific Northwest trip and the Best of the

The Hot Summer Months

“Summertime and the living is easy”, but it’s so hot!

The arrival of the hot weather usually signifies the start of summer. The months that are classified as summer depends on the tilt of the earth on its axis. This is called astronomical summer. In June the north pole is tilted toward the sun. Thus, the north-ern hemisphere (including the USA) summer is considered to be June, July and August. Likewise, for the southern hemisphere, when the south pole is tilted towards the sun, the summer months are December, January and February.

Okay, it’s summer time now in Del Webb. When we were younger, we celebrated by running through the sprinklers and getting squirted with water guns. What fun! But it is also the season for heat waves. This is a dangerous time of year!

What causes heat waves? Simply speaking, a heat wave is a period of unusually hot weather that lasts two or more days. To be considered a heat wave the temperatures must be outside (higher) than the historical averages of a given area.

A heat wave is caused by trapped air. A high-pressure system forces air downward. This pressure acts as a cap and prevents the air near the earth from rising. Without rising air, there is no rain to cool off the air. Thus, the air near the earth just gets hotter, like in an oven, and we suffer – unbearable temperatures, drought, fires, dehydration, heat exhaustion, power failures (as eve-ryone is constantly using their air conditioning), etc.

The dangerous results of heat waves are recorded in history. For instance:

London:

In the summer of 1858 high temperature was not the only problem in London at this time. Water closets were the new rage. Unfortunately, most of the raw sewage ran into the Thames River. When the temperature spiked, the noxious odor blanketed the city, but people still drank from the river. Thousands of people died. In 1865 a new sewer system was constructed to pre-vent this disaster from happening again.

Austria:

The years between 1922 - 1924, the town of Marble Bar set a world record when the 160 days between October 31, 1923 and April 7, 1924 reached over 100 degrees F.

Dust Bowl:

The central states of the USA are known as The Dust Bowl. During the summers of 1930’s there were several droughts, turning the farmers’ fields into dust. The dust blew across the land. At times it even reached the Atlantic Ocean!

Chicago:

In July 1995, approximately 739 people died in a course of five days when the temperature reached 106 degrees F. Excessive humidity caused temperatures to seem to be higher than 120 degrees F. As more people cranked up their air conditioning, power failures occurred, causing a massive problem for the hospitals.

Europe:

The highest number of deaths recorded in history, occurred in Europe in the months of July and August 2003. Temperatures over 100 degrees F resulted in more than 70,000 deaths.

Watch out! Heat waves are not a thing of the past. Scientists state that climate change, whether its natural or man-made, will increase the frequency and intensity of heat waves now and in the future. So, drink plenty of water. Stay inside, exercise in our indoor air-conditioned gym and take advantage of our pool. Stay cool and stay safe!

Special Message From The Community Service Club

35

Hope all is well in the Del Webb Community.

The Community Service Club would like to thank all who contributed to the food collections. See below for a letter from the Pastor at the First Presbyterian who the food contributions were taken to.

Thanks to all who contributed food and clothing on June 16th. Time to clean out those closets.

Hope to see you soon at the clubhouse.

Anna, Vice President Community

Dear Del Webb Community,

I want to take a moment to thank you for both your generous finan-cial gifts and food given to the Food Pantry of the First Presbyteri-an Church, Haines City. Your gifts allow our church to make a BIG differ-ence in the lives of those who live in Haines City, Davenport, Lake Hamil-ton and Dundee.

Since the beginning of the pandemic the work of the Food Pantry has almost grown ten-fold. We used to give out about 25 bags of food a week. Now we average around 200 bags of food that we hand out in sixty minutes on Wednesday afternoons. What is exciting is that before a bag is given out, we have the privilege to pray for the person(s) sitting in the car waiting for the food. We are meeting both physical and spiritual needs.

Again, thank you for your wonderful contributions to help First Presbyterian meet an important need during these difficult times.

Pastor Jeff Winter
