Faculty/Staff News:

Peter Bobkowski hosted Mike Goff, an alumnus and accomplished communicator, in his ethics class on April 18. Simran Sethi is discussing her work on climate change and national security April 23 at the Environmental Security conference. The conference is sponsored by the University of Kansas Office of Professional Military Graduate Education, the Army Research Office, and the US Army Command and General Staff College. Also, the full-day conference Reaping and Sowing: Christian Perspectives on Food and Agriculture that Sethi created, curated and organized will be on April 28. She is speaking at that conference on genetically modified organisms and faith tenets of fruitfulness, life-affirmation and distributism. Patty Noland had two guests in her Professional Development class on Thursday, April 19: Ralph Gage, director of special projects for The World Company, and Rich Claussen, executive vice president of talent development at Bailey Lauerman in Lincoln, Neb. Crystal Lumpkins was a panelist at the April 19 Contributions by Women Academicians to Intercultural Dialogue in Multicultural Societies panel discussion. The Intercultural and Interfaith Dialog Student Association and the Institute of Interfaith Dialog organized the event. Doug Ward has been named the national journalism teacher of the year. Ward, Budig Professor of Writing, will receive the Charles E. Scripps Award and be recognized at an April 26 dinner in Detroit.

Hyunjin Seo's manuscript, “Networks of networks: Changing patterns in country bandwidth and centrality in global information infrastructure, 2002-2010,” appears in the April 2012 issue of Journal of Communication. Seo co-authored the manuscript with Stuart Thorson at Syracuse University.

A veteran Associated Press statehouse correspondent, a Junction City newspaper publisher and a former University of Kansas journalism dean were inducted Friday into the Kansas Newspaper Hall of Fame. Those recognized included Del Brinkman, dean of the William Allen White School of Journalism and Mass Communications for 11 years and KU vice chancellor for academic affairs for seven years. Ron Johnson and Paul Stevens nominated Brinkman, and both have master’s degrees in journalism from KU.

CTE Innovations in Learning Grant 2012 CALL FOR APPLICATIONS—DEADLINE APRIL 23 The Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) is offering one $10,000 grant (with potential renewal) to help groups of faculty members develop a culture that supports innovative teaching and fosters deep student learning. Programs, departments, and informal interdisciplinary clusters are invited to submit applications for projects that propose ways to build this culture by integrating sustained attention to teaching innovation and the improvement of learning into the regular and recurring activities of the group. deadline. The Chandler Award Annual writing contest with a $600 first prize. The deadline is May 1st, and entry is FREE! The Chandler Award honors excellence in student writing, with an emphasis on reporting and representation of religious issues that is fair, balanced and in accordance with journalistic standards. Religion Newswriters Association, based at the University of Missouri, administers the award. Russ Chandler, a former L.A. Times religion reporter, sponsors the award. Any undergraduate or graduate student may enter published print or online news and features about religion, spirituality or ethics.
