We look forward to hearing the buzz of learning and laughter as we gathertogether in our new South Hills program designed by (with only a little adult help) and for you.

We are honored to be a part of this experience—to bring Judaism to life in a way that is relevant,enriching and worthwhile. We recognize that your teenage years are an important time, and we aimto make Jewish values ‘front row and center’ in a way that speaks to you.

We are partners in a very important endeavor—creating space that connects you to your inner selfand to others. J Line South Hills will be a place that feels safe and special—a second home.

This is a new partnership—Temple Emanuel, Beth El Congregation, South Hills Jewish Pittsburgh, theJCC and you are joining forces to bring the very best opportunities to the South Hills. This comingtogether has been a long time in the making—and we are so glad to see it become a reality.

● Mythbusters: Grades 8-9We go through our lives relying on certain assumptions:matzah balls are round, hamentaschen are triangular, pita isflat and Passover cakes—well, they are just plain bad. But whatabout the important stuff? Did God actually create the world in7 days? Were Abraham and Sarah really that old when theyhad Isaac? Did the sea really split? Can we bust these myths, ornot? You get to debate, decide and conclude.

● City of Bridges: Refugees, Immigrants, andYinzers—Grades 8-9With all the back and forth political banter about immigrantsand refugees being allowed into America, we can’t help butquestion, where does Pittsburgh stand on the issue? We willexplore the role immigrants and refugees have played in ourcity of bridges while reflecting on the Jewish values that mightclarify the tension between being welcoming and protectingourselves. Our guest speakers will include immigrants andrefugees along with those who have helped them settle inPittsburgh.

Can our inability to get Carly Rae out of ourheads actually help us live out the ideal of praying withoutceasing? Listen to and interpret songs in pop culture thatreference different ideas of God.

● Shabbat Blessings: Grades 8-9What ritual objects do you associate with Shabbat? Mostpeople mention candlesticks, Kiddush cups or challah covers.In this art class, we will explore ritual Shabbat objects found inpresent and past artwork. Each student will design and createa new Shabbat ritual object—a Shabbat blessing container.We will work with a variety of textile materials such as tiles,beads, string, yarn, fabric. At the end of the course, eachstudent will have a beautiful object and a new tradition to addto his/her Shabbat table.

Jewish history is rich with debate over the intersection offeminism and Judaism. Explore some of the people and eventsthat have contributed to this ongoing discussion, fromDeborah, the only female judge mentioned in the Bible, to BluGreenberg, founder of the Jewish Orthodox Feminist Alliance;and onward to the Daughters of Zelophehad to Women of theWall. Together, we will talk about what feminism means andhow it fits with Judaism and the social agenda.

● Jewish Short Stories: Grades 8-9“Art is too long and life is too short,” said Jewish-Americanwriter Grace Paley when asked why she hadn’t published moreworks or any novels. Read some short stories from across genres,and explore what these writers are able to say, and how theyare able to affect the Jewish community in so few pages.

Lastly, we will look to the future andexplore what might be for Israel in the decades to come.

There are 613 commandments in the Torah, but which one is the mostimportant to Judaism today? 1,500 years ago, the Talmud recorded 9answers to this question. We will explore big questions and meetPittsburghers who live out ‘the most important commandment’ fromtheir own perspective. In the end, you will have learned about the 9 andcome up with your own answer.

The sharing of bread has been a way tobreak down barriers throughout the millennia. When Jews andMuslims come together to eat the conversation often turns tokosher and halal standards. Are they the same? How are theydifferent? How can food be the unifying force in our much-needed relationship? Get ready to cook and eat.

Many themes of Broadway musicals are also thethemes of everyday life that are reflected in Jewish values. Wewill listen and sing, discuss and uncover as we make our way tothe theater.

HaZamir: Grades 8-12Learn Jewish music, make friends from around the world,and perform in world-class venues. HaZamir Pittsburghrehearses Jewish choral music on Sunday afternoons at theJCC in preparation for a spring performance with more than400 other teens from around the world at Carnegie MusicHall or Lincoln Center in New York City.

J-Serve: Grades 6-12Sunday, March 11, 2018J-Serve Pittsburgh is a teen-led day of Jewish communityservice, attended last year by 340 Jewish teens from all overthe greater Pittsburgh area. J-Serve takes place in more than90 cities around the world annually. We had the largest J-Serve turnout last year, but Atlanta is threatening us – let’sfollow the example set by the Penguins and repeat! Teenscan volunteer at more than 15 service locations.

L’Taken Social Justice SeminarJanuary 26-29, 2018In partnership with the Religious Action Center of ReformJudaism (RAC), you will have the opportunity to impact ourcountry as you share your views on social justice topics withdecision-makers on Capitol Hill. Our program is designed toboth expose you to a variety of public policy issues andexplore the Jewish values that inform advocacy aroundthese issues. Throughout the weekend, we will give you theknowledge and tools to write an effective, persuasive andpassionate speech on a topic of your choice to present whenyou visit the offices of your Senators and Representatives onthe Monday of the program.

BBYO Global Teen Shabbat BBYO is coming together with Temple Emanuel of SouthHills to celebrate a community Shabbat on Friday, December 1.

Diller Teen Fellows Grades 10-11 Diller Teen Fellows program is an immersive leadershipprogram inviting a select group of Jewish teens from 6continents and 32 communities to step up, lead theircommunities, and repair the world.
