VERMILLION — Here’s what I learned Monday night, North Dakota State sure can play volleyball.Just ask the University of South Dakota.NDSU, clearly the cream of the crop in the Summit League, showed the youthful Coyotes what it means to
be polished and effective. The Bison, in sweeping USD 3-0, made very few (if any) mistakes. Plays that looked all but lost were saved
on dives or on one-handed digs. There had to be some talented involved, naturally, but the Bison showed that depth on offense can play a
huge role. A total of seven players had kills, with the leader (Brynn Joki) only finishing with 10. NDSU used aquick set to the middle and outside hitters to keep the Coyote defense off balance, and USD coach Matt Houkeven admitted later that that’s the type of offense he wants to instill in his program.
USD saw first-hand what it will take to become an NCAA Tournament contender. Though the Coyotes aren’teligible for post-season action until next year, they’ve already proven they can beat quality teams, as evidencedby a 3-0 record at a Montana tourney two weeks ago and by their 2-0 start in the Summit League — with roadwins over first-place Oral Roberts and Southern Utah.
Now, it’s just a matter of proving they can play consistently against the elite teams (namely NDSU andSouth Dakota State) in their own league. Only time will tell.
