Tun prediction that the Cabinetis coins: to make a financial spec

tacle of itself is likely a case of thewish being father to the thoughtIf the Cabinet should prove itselfthat sort of a chump it would pass

in political review and parade

through a graveyard into a slaughterhouse.

Tue new uniform for the UnitedStates Army is not being accepted

without objection. There is loud

protest and sharp criticism. A good

many officers of the Regulars andand National Guards are very much

opposed to the changes. Newpapers are having a say. Some of

them take grounds of sentimentdeclaring that the old uniform in

which the Pederal army made itsglorious record should be retained.

Up to date the only alarm soundas to the conduct or condition of

the finances of the Provisional Gov-

ernment or Republic has eman-

ated from people entirely withoutinterest, utterly unable to analyzea statement and invariably prejud-iced. Political attacks on thetreasury have in almost every in-

stance been followed up by humbleapology, as in the case of CaptainPalmer's misrepresentations to

papers in the United States. A few

months ago slander and retractionof this character were heard in thechamber of the Senate at Washing-

ton. Coming down to the detailmatter of expenditures, Tim Staris free to say that here is a field foropen discussion and unbridledquestioning. It is not assumed byany means that the financial policy- -

is bevond or above criticism. Butwild launching of "glittering generalities" and the distortion of figures are unworthy methods.

Another element of thehas been found. It is the

fifth Jias and has been named

argon. Lord Uayleigh is the dis

coverer. That - there existedanother chemical of the air has longbeen vaeuelv suspected by thosemost advanced in scientific re

searches. In writings publishedtwelve years ago, Madame Blavatsky, the Theosophist declared thata surprise of this sort was in storefor the scientific world. Argonforms the two hundred and fiftiethpart of all the air we breathe and is

found wherever there ts air. It isthe seventieth element, is a color-

less, odorless gas like oxygen, hy-

drogen or nitrogen. Practicallynothing is known of its qualities, effects or possible effects or uses. Its isolation is now quite easily ac-

complished. All the scientists andscholars everywhere are studyingand wondering about argon. Itsdiscovery may require the mostradical modifications in conclusions

I his preparation docs justwhat it claims to do and when youread the description you wiknow all about it, that is all youcan know by reading, you musttry it to be able to understand i(

simplicity and effectiveness. It preserves Fruit, Cider, Milk

Butter' Eggs, Tomatoes, Catsup, Pickles, Etc.What is it: It is a simple.harmless preparation, free fromtaste, smell and color, that hasthe properties of stopping andpreventing fermentation in allvegetable and animal foods.

What itdoks: It is especiallyuseful lor preserving fruits of allkinds without cooking, retainin.their natural fresh appearanceand taste.

Its use docs away with labor, and makes what has been a hot, disagreeable task, a delight anda pleasure. It substitutes for theSummer heat of the kitchen thecool shade of the lawn or piazza.

Its results are never doubtful when used according todirections, and Plum Puddings,Peach and Berry Pies can behad in Winter as well as inSummer.

Its use is profitable and ceonomical, for it saves one-hal- f ofthe sugar, saves the jars brokenby heat, saves the fruit cookedaway, and saves the time andlabor lost by the old methods.

For-Cide- r it is unsurpassed. It stops fermentation at an' pointdesired, and producesa sparklingbeverage like Champagne.

The question is sometimesasked, "Is it injurious ?" Toallay all doubts on that score,we would say that wc have consuited many of our most eminentChemists and Peysicians, and allunite in pronouncing the use ofANT1-FERMENTI- NE as apreservative, a perfectly safeand harmless poeparation.

A drama is running at the Japanese theatre now. it is a piaythat would, to all appearances, fur

nish a Gilbert or a Sullivan with afew choice ideas. Actions arcstrong, climaxes arc well markedand readings appear to be of a highorder.

The story is one of ancient times.

There is but one scene, and that is

the house, of a nobleman. Thereare about fifteen different charactersin the play; The principal is anancient ruler. After years of warhe is beaten and has to flee fromhome, leaving his wife and a littledaughter behind. In disguise hewanders from place to place andfiuallv finds refuge in the house ofthe nobleman, where he hires as aservant.

The nobleman has a beautifuldaughter, aud she falls in love withthe new servant, who is both hand-some and possessed of rare intel-lect She sings for him, and hediscourses on many interestingtopics. One evening the beautifuldaughter is reclining in a handsomeboudior, while her slave lover iskneeling near by.

Suddenly,, a noise is heard out-side. The young woman dartsbehind a screen. The servant opensthe door. In walk his wife andchilu, For many months the faith-ful woman had wandered fromhouse to house seeking for her out-cast lord. She recognizes him atonce and the meeting is touching.

But the beautiful daughter be-

hind the screen hears. Slowly thetrue situation occurs to her and sheis heard to weep pitiously. Atlast sheeiuerges from hercornerandproceeds to berate her lover for de-

ceiving her. He arises and leadshis wife and child from the place.

The young lady has a brotherwho is a bad character. He hasheard his sister's speech, and afterconsultation with her, decides thatshe has been wronged. So, swordin hand he sets off after theoffender.

In the next act, officers whohave discovered the identity of thenobleman's servant, arrive. Thebad son enters with a head which,he tells them, is that of the man forwhom they are looking. Thispleases the officers, but the noble-man becomes enraged. When theofficers are gone he quarrels withhis son about the killingaud finallylays him out with his sword.

The climax is reached when thehero turns up, with his head in theright place, wealthy, and once morepowerful. He meets his wife again'after another long reparation and;they "live happily together ever, etc."

THE EARTH IS RUNNING SLOW.

Hut tlie Scientists Xced Not Alarm OnSeriously Yet.

Lord Kelvin estimates that tho "running slow" of the oarth in its daily ro- -

ation round its axis amounts to 22 seconds per century.

Tho main causo of tins retardation isthe friction caused by tho tides, whichact as a brake, tho action of which hasbeen calculated by this eminent physicist to bo equal to a weight of 4,000,000tous applied on tho equator.

Other causes havo also to bo taken into account as for oxamplo, tho increasein tho size of tho earth, duo to tho fall-

ing on it of uietQotio dust, which, if de-

posited at tho rato of ono foot in 4,000years, would prodnco the observed

by itself.Such a phenomenon as tho annual

growth aud molting of snow and ico attho poles is introducing irregularitiesinto tho problem, tho growtli at thopoles, by abstracting water from thoother parts of tho ocean, acceleratingtho oarth'B motion, and tho molting, byrestoring tho water, retarding it.

Against tho retarding forces thero hasto bo taken into account a probablo acceleration, duo to tho gradual sinkingof tho earth by cooling, but this Lord.Kelvin believes to be very small perhaps not moro than onopart of tho retardation duo to tidal frictiou.

Profossor Ncwcomb has declared fromastronomical considerations that thoearth went slow aud lost seven secondsbetween 1850 and 1802, and then wentfast and gained eight seconds botween1802 and 18,2, changes of rato explicable by possiblo changes in tho earth'sshape, so slight as to boquUo undiscoV'erablo in astronomical observations.Chicago Times.

plied, "If this etraugor should mounthero again, I Will break bin neck, nndbo shall bo seen no moro lu tho valleybelow."

"Oh, mother, I beseoch theo, bo notso cruol, for ho win beautiful!"

"If thou lottest ,thy thoughts dwollon him now, I will sbutvtheo up In tliocavo nnd compol thoo to wolg,h goldnight nnd day. Of latothou doest notlt-tu- g

"Oh, no, mother! I long to havo justsuch n beautiful beast torido on ns thatwhich camo up tho sldo of our mountain. Hero I seo only sheep, nud ouocannot rido on thorn."

What a foolish child thou nrt towish for n horsol Dost thou not knowthnt only at risks of life aud limb canouo mount horo on a horso'a back? Tliograss is so slippery nud tlio nbysscs sodcepthataf-iiifil- falso step would causoono to roll to tho bottom a (Shapelessmass."

Alba asked herself how it was thattho sheep ran nbout iu perfect snfety, whilo so much danger oxlsted for thofeet of a horso, but not daring to ques-

tion her mother further sho had to remain in ignorance. And now it was thnttho gnomes appeared uglier to her eyesnud moro repnUivo thau they had ovorseemed to her.

Sho took such a disgust, too, for thoheaps of gold thnt sho could not enduretho sight of them. Hor thoughts onlydwolt en tho magnificent horso and bisbeautiful ridor, tho youth whoso lifowould bo tho forfeit did he venturo ona second expedition in tho Baba's territory. Why did hor mother wish to an-

nihilate him? This was ono moro problem Impossible to solve, though sho satmusing over it for hours.

Somo timo after tho conversation between tho Baba and her daughter tliobeautiful youth again rodoup tho mountain side, attracted by his curiosity todiscover who dwelt within this stronghold, constructed of such immeiisoblocks of grauito.

This beautiful youth wa-- uono othorthan tho Princo Porfln, a king's son, ticcustomed to his overy behest beingobeyed, nnd who fcaud rcsistanco to hiswill any difficulty, in fact to possessall tho charm of novelty for lifm.

When nt his father's court tho sub-

ject of marriago was discussed, ho usedto say that ho should wish to snatch hisbrido from a dragon's claws or rescuohor from tho cleft of n rock, instead ofgoing through tho formal routino ofsending embassadors to insurohis beingmarried without his taking auy troubloabout it himself.

Alba, having much against her willsorted gold all morning, was now makinc her toilet. Sho bathed her faco nndbands iu perfumed waters, combed herlong soft hair with an ivory comb, bound her brow witli a doublo fillet ofraro pearls nud placed au Alpen rosont ono side. Her robo was of soft stuff, clapped at tho waist by n golden girdle, over which foil n mantle of rich greenvelvet affixed to tho shoulders by chainsof priceless pearls.

Kound her snowy throat was a stringof emeralds largo as pigeons' eggs. Thesewero gifts brought to her by tho gnomes.Sho could not seo tho Bhoenof hor beautiful yellow trossoa glistening on thopile of tho thick velvet, and either hormirror lied to her or sho saw quite tho

length Alba ktnod before Mm.revomo of reality, for sho struck herface aud exclaimed: "IIow ugly I amiHow terribly ugly I Perhaps beoauso ofthis my mother hides mo from the sightof men and gives mo such handsomodresses and splendid jowols, which aroonly lit for a quoou to wear. Perhapssho does this iu order to console iuo formy vaut of beauty, "

Precisely at this motnout came thosound of iChorso's hoofs along the stonycrags, and her eyes, trausnxod with torror, perooivod tho beautiful strangerwhoso lifo was to bo tho price of hismad venturo advancing toward tho portals of the citadel.

At all risks sho must waru him of hisdaugor. Springing from rock to rocknimbly as a young chamois, hor brighthair aud green mantle streaming in thowinu, sho sped toward tho young stranger, her tiny feet scarcely skimming thoearth ns sho wont. Struck with admira-tion on perceiving hor, the princo reinedin his steed, asking himself what king'sdaughter, what mountain fairy, was thisspeeding towaril him. Now sho cried.quito out of breath and waving herlovoly nrms toward him:

"Go back! Go back! Do not come uphigher on tho mountain, as you valnoyour life."

"Wero doath to bo tho forfoit," saidhe, "I should dio quito happy afterhaving beon blessed with tho vision oftho most boautoous maidon over onGod's oarth."

At length Alba stood boforo him. Afaint bluslt tingod her maidon clioek as,looking at him in wonder with hersplendid largo oyes, sho said, "Am I,then, roally beautiful?"

"Oh, yes, so marvolously beautifulnnd so altogether onohanting with thyrich goldon hair, that from this vorymoment I lovo thoo dearly."

"I.lovo theo nlso," said tho innocentmaid, for sho was not awaro that iu thosooiety of mortals ono must not ho road-il- y
