May 12 / DAY 1: DEPART US for DUBLIN, IRELAND

Depart USA for an overnight flight to Ireland. Meals are served on board.

May 13 / DAY 2: ARRIVE DUBLIN Cead Mile Failte – Welcome to Ireland! Arrive into Dublin Airport where the

group will be met by a private driver and transferred to your Dublin City ac-

commodation. En route the driver will give the group a short orientation tour of

the city. Dublin is one of Europe’s most vibrant cities. Over a thousand years

old, the turbulent history and rich traditions of the city have inspired writers,

artists and musicians down the ages. Today, artists are still attracted by Dub-

lin’s youthful enthusiasms and easy-going lifestyle and the city has become a

thriving center of culture and enjoyment. The new wave of cafes and restau-rants are meeting places for all ages while traditional Dublin pubs are rightly

world-famous for their informal atmosphere and lively conversation. The city

oozes atmosphere, not least in the heady scents that cling to it – the rich aro-

ma of the hops being roasted in the Guinness brewery and the salty tang of the

sea. Nighttime entertainment is a rich mix of world-class theater, concerts from

classical to rock, jazz clubs, traditional music sessions and old-style cabaret.

Dublin gets much of its energy from its young people and enjoys one of the

best clubbing scenes in Europe. Above all, Dublin is a small city, where visitors

can feel at home after even the shortest stay. Overnight at the Sandymount Hotel or similar (Dinner, Bed & Breakfast)

May 14 / DAY 3: DUBLIN CITY TOUR

This morning after a hearty Irish breakfast a local Dublin City Guide will meet the group at the hotel where they will introduce you to the city during a half

day panoramic city tour. See the city's scenic highlights on a narrated drive

through Dublin City, including the River Liffey, the Customs House, O'Connell

Street, the GPO (General Post office), the Four Courts, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral

Christchurch Cathedral, Trinity College, St. Stephen's Green and Leinster

House. Visit St. Patrick's Cathedral - Founded in 1190, the cathedral stands on

the spot where St. Patrick supposedly made his first Irish converts to Christian-

ity in the 5th century. The cathedral was damaged during Cromwell's invasion of Ireland in the 17th century; the Guinness family of brewery fame restored

the structure in the 19th century. Jonathan Swift, author of Gulliver's Travels,

was dean of St. Patrick's and is buried here. See the Phoenix Park over 700

hectares (1752 acres) in area and is the largest enclosed public Park in any

capital city in Europe. It was originally formed as a royal hunting Park in the

1660's and opened to the public in 1747. A large herd of fallow deer still re-

main to this day. Visit the Book of Kells - The Book o f Kells was written around

the year 800 AD and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in

the world. Its 680 pages of vellum contain the Latin texts of the Four Gospels. It was written by Irish monks, probably begun at a monastery in Iona, an is-

land off Scotland and finished at Kells, Co. Meath. It was later buried in the

ground for fear of the Vikings and after being eventually rediscovered it was

deposited for safe keeping in Trinity around 1653. Travel past Merrion Square,

the heart of Georgian Dublin - Mapped out 250 years ago in 1762, it has fine

Georgian Houses on three sides and the garden of Leinster House and The

National Gallery and Natural History Museum. Today many of the houses are

predominantly used as office space but there is a wealth of history attached. Oscar Wilde lived as a child at 1 Merrion Square & there is now a statue of him

in the Merrion Square Park, while W.B Yeats lived at No 82, and Daniel O’Con-

nell at No 58. Return to the Sandymount Hotel for dinner & overnight.

May 15 / DAY 4: WICKLOW – GLENDALOUGH & POWERSCOURT

Travel south today to County Wicklow, traditionally known as the ‘Garden of

Ireland’. County Wicklow is one of Ireland's true scenic treasures with its mag-

nificent hills and mountains, long sandy beaches, rivers and lakes. Stop and

visit Powerscourt House & Gardens, situated 20kms from Dublin –Powerscourt

is one of Ireland finest houses. Even the avenue leading to the Palladian house

echoes the magnificence of the whole estate, being a mile long and lined by

over 2,000 beech trees. In addition the 47 acres of gardens are remarkable for

their grandeur of scale, at the same time combining great delicacy and refine-ment of detail. The house was gutted by fire in 1974 but recently has been

reborn as an exceptional tourist destination. An exhibition brings to life the rich

history of the estate, while the double height Georgian ballroom has been re-

stored and hosts weddings and corporate events. The house is now home to

the best of Irish design in gifts, clothes, and furniture in the Avoca Stores and

the Interiors Gallery. You can also treat yourself to a dish from the Avoca

Cookbook in the Terrace Cafe.In the afternoon visit Glendalough (or Gleann Da

Loch, meaning ‘The Glen of the Two Lakes’) which is situated in the heart of the Wicklow Mountains National Park. The ancient monastery on the site is a

fascinating site, having been founded in the 6th century by St. Kevin. Set in a

glaciated valley with two lakes, the monastic remains include a superb round

tower, stone churches and decorated crosses. The round tower is one of the

most recognizable landmarks in the area. The site also includes a Celtic high

cross, St. Mary’s Church and St. Kevin’s Church. The remains of three stone

crosses and a stone fort are also to be found between the upper and lower

lakes. Glendalough Visitor Centre is situated adjacent to the monastic settle-

ment and as well as an exhibition, contains an audio-visual demonstration. The visitor centre is fully accessible for visitors with disabilities. Access to the

graveyard is very difficult for wheelchair users. The Wicklow Mountains Nation-

al Park is an ideal location to learn more about the flora and fauna of Glen-

dalough, where wildlife habitats thrive and grow in the natural countryside.

Return to Dublin for overnight.

May 16 / DAY 5: DUBLIN - GALWAY

Travel west to Gawlay today. En route the group will visit Clonmacnoise, an

early Christian monastic site located near Shannonbridge, County Offaly. It was

founded by St. Ciarán in the mid-6th century on the eastern bank of the River

Shannon. The site includes the ruins of a cathedral, seven churches (10th-13th

century), two round towers, three high crosses and the largest collection of

Early Christian grave slabs in Western Europe. The original high crosses and a selection of grave slabs are on display in the visitor centre. The long and varied

history of Clonmacnoise is recounted in an audiovisual presentation shown in

the visitor centre. There are also exhibitions that deal with the flora, fauna and

landscape of the region. Arrive into Galway. Galway nestles at the neck of

Galway Bay and is reputed to have been Columbus’ final point of departure on

his epoch-making voyage of discovery. The city was founded on the east bank

of the river late in the 12th century by the Anglo-Norman family de Burgo. It

attracted many Welsh and Norman merchants who enclosed the city within a defensive wall. Under the control of the fourteen leading families, known as the

‘tribes’ an extensive trade developed, not only with the continent, importing

French and Spanish wine, but also with the West Indies. Highlights of the city

include Eyre Square, Lynch’s Castle, St. Nicholas’ Church, O’Brien’s Bridge,

Spanish Arch, the Famous Claddagh, beautiful Galway Bay, Salthill Promenade,

University College, Salmon Weir Bridge, Court House and the Municipal Thea-

tre. Check into Flannerys Hotel or similar for dinner and overnight.

May 17 / DAY 6: CONNEMARA & KYLEMORE ABBEY

After a full Irish breakfast at Flannerys Hotel the group will explore some of the

beautiful countryside of Connemara, with its rolling hills, flowing rivers and

coastal landscapes. Connemara is a wild and beautiful region of mountains,

lakes, tumbling streams undulating bog, unspoiled beaches and panoramic views. It is a Gaelic- speaking region and has attracted many artisans, who can

be visited at work in their studios. The centre of Connemara is composed of

mountain peaks, the Twelve Bens or Pins which culminate in Benbaun (2388ft-

728m). The sharp grey peaks of quartzite rock which is resistant to weathering

are too steep and hard to be clothed in blanket bog. The region is now largely

uninhabited, although in the past the more fertile lowlands were cultivated and

the uplands were used as pasture for cattle and sheep. Visit Kylemore Abbey.

Kylemore Abbey is the only home of the Benedictine nuns in Ireland. The Ab-bey was acquired by the nuns in 1920. Set in the heart of Connemara, this

unique Abbey offers the warmth and hospitality of it’s peaceful environs. It’s

enchanting history is interpreted in detail in rooms at the Abbey. It was origi-

nally built by Mitchell Henry, M.P. for County Galway (a native of Manchester

city) 1864 -1868 as a gift for his wife. The Gothic Church, set in the grounds of

the Abbey, is the jewel in the crown of Kylemore. It has been lovingly restored

and any visit would not be complete without seeing it. Return to Flannery’s for

overnight.

May 18 / DAY 7: BURREN & CLIFFS OF MOHER

Depart Galway and travel south through the area known as the Burren. The

Burren takes its name from the Irish word 'bhoireann' meaning, 'a stony place'

or 'a rocky place', which is a good description for this 350 sq kilometres lime-stone plateau in North Clare. The rough, intriguing and attractive landscape

was formed 320 million years ago under a tropical sea. Later it was shaped by

ice, hard weather and, of course, man and his beasts. The many wedge tombs

and megalithic tombs prove that people have been living in the Burren for

more than 5000 years. One of the more famous megalithic tombs is the portal

dolmen - Poulnabrone Dolmen - The name Poulnabrone literally means 'the

hole of the sorrows' and it is one of the most famous Irish dolmens. The thin

capstone sits on two high portal stones to create a chamber and a low cairn. This site dates back to about 2500 BC. Visit the Cliffs of Moher - Ireland’s most

visited natural attraction with a magical vista that captures the hearts of up to

1 million visitors each year. The Cliffs rise up to 214 (700 feet) at the highest

point and range for 8km over the Atlantic Ocean on the Western seaboard of

Co. Clare. Visit the eco-friendly visitor centre which operates using environ-

mental best practices & features a state of the art Cliff’s exhibition. Return to

Galway for overnight.

May 19 / DAY 8: KNOCK SHRINE

Depart Galway and travel northwards to Knock - Knock Shrine in Knock, Coun-

ty Mayo is an international place of prayer and pilgrimage where over one and

a half million people make their way every year. The story of Knock dates back

to the 21st of August 1879 when fifteen people from the village witnessed an apparition of Our Lady, St Joseph, St John the Evangelist, an altar, cross and

lamb. Following this miraculous event, numerous cures were reported, the first

being that of Delia Gordon, a young girl from the neighboring town of Clarem-

orris who was cured of deafness. Since then pilgrims have come to Knock in

search of healing, reconciliation and peace. The personal pilgrimage of Pope

John Paul 11 in 1979 to commemorate the centenary of the apparition and the

visit of Mother Teresa of Calcutta in 1993 inspired Today Knock Shrine is set in

one hundred acres of beautiful landscaped gardens with meandering pathways and a diverse range of flowers, shrubs and trees. The complex incorporates five

churches including the apparition chapel, parish church and basilica, a religious

books centre, caravan and camping park, Knock Museum, Café le Chéile and

Knock House Hotel. Return to Galway for overnight and enjoy a farewell dinner.
